Robert DeNiro may be one of the best actors of his generation but when it comes to the hospitality industry, the star apparently has a lot to learn.
Nobu Hotel Manila, which is co-owned by the actor, chef Nobu Matshuhisa and movie producer Meir Teper, was named as the worst new luxury hotel of 2015 by Luxury Travel Intelligence (LTI), a members-only group that touts membership comprised of jetsetters and high net worth individuals, on their annual best and worst new hotels list.
DeNiro, who has worked with the lauded Japanese chef in his growing restaurant empire, was not able to translate the high-end eatery experience to the hotel at the City of Dreams complex in Manila, the Philippines, which officially opened in May.
According to Blouin Art Info, which received an early release of the LTI report, members were “underwhelmed and disenchanted” by the property which had “disappointments at every turn.”
Rooms at the 5-star property start at $164 for a regular deluxe room and $400 for a Nobu Suite with city views.
Joining Nobu Hotel Manila at the top of the worst list was the newly opened Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius, in east Africa described as “being opened well before it was ready.” After extensive renovations, the hotel still found the hotel to have “poor service and inadequate staff training plus a distinct impression that management is not present.”
And while St. Regis hotels are usually heralded for superior service and luxurious accommodations, the newly opened St. Regis Mumbai, India came in as the third worst new luxury hotel. Members of LTI called it a “rare slip up by this well regarded brand,” due to “a rushed and badly executed takeover of an existing (and troubled) property – The Palladium.”
Ranked the best, the Mandarin Oriental in Marrakech in Morocco was voted was at the top new luxury hotel of 2015. LTI members described the property as “stunning and faultless” with major props due to management who made sure that “everything was perfect before opening their doors.” The secluded hotel has 34 villas spread over 50 acres.
The Sant Francesc in Palma Mallorca, Spain came second on the best list, with high praise as the “the perfect luxury boutique hotel, in the perfect ‘boutique’ European city,” and the Aman Tokyo came in third.

Just Too Proud

Despite this adage, today’s generation of would-be-celebrities seem to be missing out on the essence of this teaching. Compared to previous celebrities, the young ones are presented more opportunities to prove themselves and are exposed to training in other fields. Sometimes, they are made to believe that they have a strong following as indicated by favorable articles in newspapers, number of followers, and numerous projects. Somewhere along the way, they consider these factors as their achievements and with a half-full glass of water, they revel in such fame and use such to justify their actions.
As soon as Young Celebrity (YC) got his break in a teleserye, he forgot much about humility. During one of his tapings, YC was approached by a group of extras, who had various roles in the project. The extras tried to strike a conversation with YC, who merely shrugged off his shoulder. YC surely made the extras feel like they do not exist at all. While extras hardly receive credit for their appearances in teleserye projects, their presence is indispensable, especially, if the production does not have the budget to hire named performers to populate scenes.
The extras would have understood the crass personality of YC had they not witnessed the disparity in the treatment accorded by YC to the popular and/or senior stars in the teleserye. YC would talk to them, smile at them, and treat them with much respect. By contrast, YC ignores the extras and dismisses them even though he is not yet a big star.
Worse, YC has extended his impolite behavior towards members of the production crew. Instead of asking the crew nicely, he uses the tone of a boss. He orders the staff like slaves, which, of course they are not. He has become arrogant and too proud. Sadly, the extras now consider YC as number one on the list of talents they would rather not work with. It is just too bad that given the seeming importance his network gives him, YC could not even find it in his heart to be humble to everyone regardless of their placement in showbiz hierarchy.
‘A grateful heart is a beginning of greatness. It is an expression of humility. It is a foundation for the development of such virtues as prayer, faith, courage, contentment, happiness, love, and well-being.’ - James E. Faust
