Repost: Mike de Leon Has Found ‘Citizen Jake’

Filmmaker Mike de Leon has found the perfect person to play the titular hero in his comeback movie, “Citizen Jake,” and he is not an actor.

True to his maverick ways, De Leon is taking a huge risk, by casting real-life journalist Atom Araullo to play a reel-life reporter.

After a series of meetings and discussions, it can now be announced: Araullo is “firmly on board, having been given the all clear by his bosses” in ABS-CBN, De Leon said.

Araullo told the Inquirer: “I just couldn’t say no to Mike de Leon. I am taking this leap of faith because I believe in his ability to produce films of exceptional quality that are always imbued with social relevance.”

De Leon has been swapping ideas with Araullo and is planning to collaborate on the “creation of the screenplay” with the reporter and writer Noel Pascual.

“Our discussions have been rather intense, but enjoyable,” Araullo recounted. “Mike is a genius obviously, and I’m just trying my best to keep up. I really appreciate the trust he has given me in helping shape the script and its message.”

“Atom is a very intelligent person, with a deep social conscience—and he writes very well,” De Leon told the Inquirer.

“As journalists, our job is to shine the light on important issues in the hope of inspiring people to act,” Araullo said. “But sometimes, fiction actually does a better job at this, especially in the so-called post-truth era. The stakes are higher than they’ve ever been, and we have to be careful not to repeat the mistakes of the past.”

The fact that Araullo is not a professional actor is more boon than bane for De Leon.

“Atom is not show biz,” De Leon remarked. “In the film, I am not using ‘starring Atom Araullo’…but ‘featuring Atom Araullo,’ instead.”

De Leon conceded that working with a nonactor is unfamiliar territory for him. “This is a strange, but interesting experience for me…not only because it will probably be my last film, but because I’ve got an interesting subject matter.”

As coup de grace, he pointed out, “I have a real journalist playing a fictional journalist in an investigative crime story with political overtones.”

The “Citizen Jake” of the title, he explained, refers to “the world of citizen journalists, social media and politics.”

He described his latest movie as “a hybrid film of sorts.”

It’s pretty obvious that De Leon, the director behind such hard-hitting films as “Batch ’81” and “Kisapmata,” will not be shy about tackling potentially explosive issues in his latest movie.

He doesn’t give a hoot if it proves “controversial,” too. Since it might be his swan song, he asserted, he is pulling out all the stops.

De Leon is currently working on the screenplay and is doing extra research.

“I think we may be getting it already,” he quipped.

He is likewise gathering his creative crew.

“I am fast-tracking things to set up my production team before Christmas,” he volunteered. “I hope to start principal photography by the middle or end of March—or the beginning of April, at the latest.”

As for the rest of the cast?

“Aside from Atom, I have not tried casting the other characters yet until the sequence treatment…or the first draft at least…is completed,” De Leon related. “Hopefully, by early December.”

Her Business Dealings

Integrity and clean living are assumed rules for personalities involved in news and media organization. Networks that have strong news departments are keen on the lifestyle that their reporters and anchors are living behind the cameras. This guideline is stressed because media is supposed to be independent and unbiased. Besides, if a news personality is caught in an embarrassing or questionable situation, his/her credibility is eroded, which in turn, affect the reputation of the news department.

While issues of bribery are commonly attached to news personalities, let Energetic Reporter (ER) be different. As ER exhibits a strong personality that has endeared her to the listening and viewing audience, her life behind the newsdesk could make the cut for columns of showbiz reporters. ER has long been separated from her husband and has raised her kids as a single parent. Her career in the newsroom could be counted in decades and with substantial experience in several news organizations. What makes ER click with the audience is her down-to-earth reporting, which could either make the audience love or hate her style.

However, the lovestory of ER these days might soon be subject to deeper investigation, as her superior has gotten facts and has issued a memo. Allegedly, ER has her eyes set on a Particular Crew (PC) of her department. When ER needs to travel for her coverage, expect her to request for the services of PC, whom she says is trustworthy and with whom she feels comfortable. To make sure she gets her request, ER would book PC ahead of her schedule and at one point, and she even requested PC for an international coverage as she needed someone to operate the equipment. Her request was not questioned yet, as ER could be loud.

Lately, it was noticed that ER and PC would return to the homebase hours after the designated time of return. As no lead escapes the news department, A Mole (AM) followed the pair during their assignment. When AM returned with the report, the story was amusing, but nonetheless, would have repercussions on the integrity of the team.

After the coverage, ER and PC would park their vehicle at a public place, such as a restaurant. ER allegedly uses the time to transform into a disguise by changing clothes or even putting on a cap. Then, when they leave, they take a cab to proceed to their happy place. Worse, the grapevines say that ER is giving money to PC. Although her situation might sound familiar, ER remains firm and innocent while rumors about her tryst with PC are circulating in her network. Incidentally, PC is married and has children. Hence, the financial matter is an important factor for him.

Repost: Miss Philippines Universe Maxine Medina Admits to Not Yet Fully Prepared for the Pageant

With less than two months left before the big night, Maxine Medina is still hard at work in improving herself as she looks to win the Philippines' first back-to-back Miss Universe titles.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, the beauty queen appeared a little anxious when asked about her thoughts on the confirmation that the country will host the pageant for the third time.

While she did say that she is excited to compete in front of a home crowd, a stammering Medina also admitted that she is still not 100 percent ready for the international contest.

"I've been doing a lot of training," said Medina, who earlier drew some criticism for her winning response during the Q&A portion of this year's Binibining Pilipinas pageant. "I'm always updating myself with current events, and I even discuss it with friends and family. I'll be ready by that time."

She added that she doesn't feel any pressure to follow up on Kylie Verzosa's win in the Miss International pageant, and that the success of others only motivates her more to succeed reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach.
