Kicking the Double Standard

The worst calamity to ever hit the country has brought out the best and the worst in all of us. The aftermath of typhoon Yolanda saw most sectors engaged in endless bickering, bashing, and blame game for the undelivered tasks at hand. Fortunately, not all goodness was lost. Amidst the overwhelming negativity were encouraging smiles from people, too - a lot of good souls walking their talk.

We saw how the world grieved for the victims prompting them to come together to help the country get up from its deeply shattered spirit. For the first time, the country has witnessed the outpouring of help coming from the many nations of the world. We were overwhelmed with love we never thought was possible.

On the local front, unfortunately, politics came to the fore and reared its ugly head once more. Blaming and bashing became fashionable, exempting no one, even and especially the highest officials of the land. Government defenders had their hands full salvaging whatever is left of its severely damaged international reputation.

Even the local journalists were not spared from infighting within their own network in defense of their respective principles, or beliefs. You know when tensions rise and emotions get in the way of reason, which was exactly what happened to two of the network's top journalists.

Reportedly, beleaguered News Personality NP's recent controversy had all the trappings of insider hands working within the network either to prolong her agony or vindicate her outright.

NP's Colleague NC who doesn't exactly have good words for NP was reportedly egging the Department Head DH to impose a more severe sanction on NP for her alleged grave misconduct. NC reportedly was on the side of The Party whom NP clashed with, even retweeting TP's tweets on the matter - slowing down only and deleting her tweets when NP was presumed to be under sanction already.

NC believed that NP did a great disservice to the network for her conflict with TP, and told DH that a stiffer penalty other than the one that was reported should be imposed. NP's Senior Colleague SC when told of the impending bigger sanction on NP defended her and even threatened DH that should she punish NP even more, he (SC) and Another Colleague AC would go with NP, and not appear on their program altogether.

That's it, while some of the network's 'lesser' personalities get disciplined for even lesser offenses - NP gets off the hook. Indeed, what is good for the goose is not good for the gander.

“If you're going to kick authority in the teeth, you might as well use two feet.” ~ Keith Richards

What a Businesswoman!

Social networking has spread around the world with unbelievable speed. Admit it or not, its influence on the netizens practically dictates how we do business, conduct ourselves - generally, how we live our online lives. To some extent, it molds us.

If you’re an active social-media user, you can’t deny the phenomenon that is Instagram. " Its online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service enables users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on various social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr." What one can't communicate in words, some photos make the task easier.

The immense popularity of Instagram has captured millions of users worldwide. To some people, Instagram is heaven-sent, as they are able to enjoy its huge privileges. Rightly or wrongly, it has become subject for abuse. And whether they admit it or not, some celebrities are the ones who are guilty of this abuse.

Merchant Followers MF of celebrities use the opportunity to promote their products on the celebrities' Instagram feed knowing that their huge following get to see MF products. Needless to say, it is surprisingly cheap, especially for the cost-conscious entrepreneur. In return, some MF give celebrities some products for free.

Very enterprising TV Host TH is one notoriously known for milking this opportunity. To be able to cut cost, TH has now reportedly gone to using Instagram as a business platform, without a sweat. Allegedly, she asks her MF for some product samples such as clothes, food, and even pricey ones such as watches and at times even GC's, too. The items have to be delivered to her first before she posts their pictures on her wall. Reportedly, TH has gone overboard, asking as much as 50% discount for travel fare.

Yes, it is - social media has redefined public's perception of what social graces and etiquette are all about.

Bloggers Will Not Be Invited to New York Fashion Week

Bloggers will no longer be included in the New York Fashion Week guest list, making way for industry professionals.

The Wall Steet Journal recently reported that IMG Fashion, which runs Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, will be cutting their media invites by 20% this February. Inviting only guests that are of "value to the designers" by tightening their accreditation guidelines - in other words, no bloggers will be on the guest list.

Back in September, Fern Mallis, creator of New York Fashion Week and owner of IMG Fashion said that it's time to become more exclusive. Bloggers were occupying spaces in the shows audiences that were designed for buyers - and this according to Fern must change. Catherine Bennett, Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion recently stated "It was becoming a zoo! What used to be a platform for established designers to debut their collections to select media and buyers has developed into a cluttered, often cost-prohibitive and exhausting period for our industry to effectively do business."

Some designers have already complained about Fashion Week being too chaotic and no longer as exclusive as it used to be. Oscar de la Renta, who has stopped putting on larger shows, had a very intimate 350 guest list this September to show his spring-summer collection. The designer opted for a more intimate presentation inviting only the fashion elite.
