Ramen Nagi Butao 豚王: Black King, Red King & Green King Ramen in Manila!

RAMEN NAGI'S BUTAO 豚王 Ramen is hailed as the BEST Ramen in Hong Kong by most foodies. It was established by Ramen Master Chef Ikuta Satoshi in Shibuya, Tokyo in 2006. It's a young, authentic and very creative ramen house which is easy to find by just following the long queues.

They have RAMEN NAGI branches in Shibuya, Nishi Shinjuku1F, and Kogame in Tokyo. In Hong Kong, they are popularly known as BUTAO with branches in Central, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui. They opened international franchises in Taipei, Jakarta, Indonesia and soon in Manila. (There's no branch in Singapore.)

Recently, BUTAO held its first Pop-up Store to test and introduce the first ever bowls of Butao King (traditional pork-bone soup), Black King (Butao broth with squid ink), Red King (spicy miso-based soup) and Green King(Japanese-Italian fusion: olive oil, basil and cheese) in Manila.

Our foodie friend Jin Perez of Jin Loves to Eat blog said, "There are too many ramen shops sprouting left and right in Hong Kong, but Butao Ramen remains to be my favorite."

The Pop-up Ramen Nagi Butao store was held for one day at Selah Bistro and Coffee Bar at Robinson’s Cybergate.

The first ever Butao ramen bowls in Manila were served here. 

It was a by-invitation-only affair with friends, mall business partners and some bloggers attending.

BUTAO Ramen is the traditional tonkotsu ramen with a milky rich pork soup. It got its name from BUTA which means pork and O means King, so Pork King.

The soup was rich and really good with thin noodles and the right egg. Since they had limited time to prepare for the pop-up, they used Philippine pork which is a bit thick and tough.

Richie of the Pickiest Eater in the World loves Butao among all the ramens we tasted that day.

BLACK KING. My wife and I both agreed that our favorite is the squid ink ramen known as the Black King. It has finely-chopped squid, rich black soup with lots of garlic.

It reminds you of eating black ink spaghetti with yummy soup and egg.

RED KING. This is the chili ramen version with a smooth hotness that does not stay on your mouth. I love it and it was a pleasure eating it without getting tired of the taste.

CURRY KING. This was really good too but I felt a bit weird eating curry with pasta. The curry is best paired with rice, and curry lovers rave about this ramen.

The winner for us is the Black King and this is something that foodies would rave about in Manila.

Before we go, Ramen Master Chef Ikuta decided to serve us a special ramen bowl of Ebi King and the famousGreen King ramen of Butao.

Ebi King, the shrimp-based ramen, was a bit salty for us. But the Japanese loved this type of Ramen.

GREEN KING. This is one of the most innovative ramens I've ever tasted. And it's quite unique because it is Italian-inspired with basil, olive oil and yes -- cheese!

It's like eating pesto pasta with soup and putting cheese on top of your ramen works!

It was great to see Michael Lim of Fashion Pulis fame with Ramen Master Chef Ikuta during the Butao Pop-up :)

Overall, we love the Black King, Red King and most specially Green King. If you think you have tasted all the ramen flavors in Manila, wait until you get a taste of Butao! I love the creativity of the chef, and the unique ramen combinations.

I'm excited for Butao to open in Manila because they have the most extensive and unique condiments that you can add on with your ramen. I wonder how much each ramen bowl would cost...

She’s Really Lacking Propriety

After having been through controversial relationships, Dusky Beauty – DB seems unattached at the moment. But unlike most stars who thrive on publicizing their love affairs, DB strives to keep everything as private as possible, thus earning her the mysterious tag and the more apt - denial queen. But being quiet and mysterious don’t limit her from dating guys as she seems to be active in that department.

No wonder that ever since she joined showbiz, almost all of DB’s relationships became fodder for controversies – even without her meaning to. The gossip mill was abuzz with rumors of DB’s being a “material girl,” perhaps justifying her preference for certain character and types of men. Observers say that DB definitely goes for guys with deep pockets, hence the perceived label. Yet, DB is quick to deny that she is the materialistic kind. Uh oh, did I say that she was also tagged as denial queen?

It’s public knowledge that DB was once in a relationship with a political scion – PS, which she never really admitted. Even with her presence at the onset of PS biggest and major controversy years ago, DB kept denying everything, especially after the verdict had been handed down. It was during PS ordeal that DB was alleged to have severed her ties with him. When PS survived that crisis, people privy to him said he looked like a reformed man ready to change for good.

Here’s the gist: DB reportedly now wants to win back PS, especially after he scored a major victory in a recent contest. She is often rumored to be asking PS whereabouts among their common friends - and worse showing up uninvited in his events/parties. PS friends are definitely pissed, because they can smell some motives behind it.

Reportedly, PS wants to turn a new leaf, wanting to walk his talk as a show of gratitude to his supporters and followers who supported him all the way and to prove that he really means business. Quite obviously, DB’s recent acts are not helping him any. However, some curious minds are wondering what is prompting DB to go back to PS. “Clearly, it’s for the perks,” they alleged, “as in the past when she wallowed in the generosity of PS and family. “

More Class Act

It seems like the top screen goddesses of today are in a head-to-head battle. Surely, in a dog-eat-dog industry, a little competition wouldn't hurt but one must know when to hold the breaks, for the sake of one's sanity, at the very least.

One would surmise that Lady Aphrodite - LA, would be confident enough in the decade-long run of her stable career to keep her composure and avoid publicly toasting a glass for herself for being "the bigger celebrity." This inspite of a slew of not-so-successful tv shows, movies and almost zero endorsement. Yet, she has something that's hers alone - her stunning and arresting beauty - matched with a high-profile love affair with a hunk to die for.

While LA is known for her thoughtless behavior, the public is quick to dismiss these traits as quirky, rather than conventional. This may be due to the fact that she has impeccable features and a body that any woman would turn green with envy.

In a event hosted by her network, a reporter expressed her admiration and congratulated Angelic Maiden - AM for her allure and the overwhelming success of her new primetime soap. This string of compliments thrown at AM must have hit a nerve with LA, who irritably interjected that she still is the primetime queen and the highest-paid actress of her network. The Reporter - RE seeing an opportunity to fan the flame, added that AM has three projects currently lined up for her.

Not wanting to be upstaged, LA said that she, too, doesn't only have projects in line for her - but networks. Networks are the ones lining up to get her services and constantly try to outbid each other in an attempt to have her on their roster of stars. When the RE tried to quash her claims saying that her last movie was a flop, LA threatened the reporter to stop annoying her any further or else he will be stripped off of his “payola.” RE was floored.

Blessed with a stable career, nonetheless, LA should better give her diva attitude a rest and wear modesty and quiet confidence on her sleeves instead.
