Repost: Renewal of ABS-CBN Franchise in the Hands of Congress, Not the President

The renewal of ABS-CBN Corp's franchise will be up Congress, not President Rodrigo Duterte, his spokesman said Thursday.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo made the remark when asked about the case of rival broadcaster TV5, whose franchise lapsed into law. A bill granting a fresh franchise to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines also lapsed into law without the President's signature.

"But ABS-CBN ang expiration next year pa eh, tsaka Congress naman. Nasa Kongreso ang bola niyan, hindi naman kay Presidente."

(ABS-CBN's franchise will expire next year and that will depend on Congress not the President.)

Duterte has criticized ABS-CBN for allegedly not airing a 2016 campaign that he paid for and instead showing a TV spot that was critical of him and was paid by his critic, former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.

The franchise of the Lopez-led network will expire in March 2020.

    1. I think Congress will allow ABS to renew it IF magbabayad na sila. Pero pag hindi, sana hindi rin sila magpa awa sa madlang people. :) This should be fair.

  4. Pano ire-renew kung ayaw pa rin magbayad ng utang? Hello DBP. Hello BIR. Iba pa yung kay presidente para sa campaign ad. Pag na-settle yan siguro naman mare-renew na ang franchise. Time is running out.

  11. It's the law that Congress will have to file a bill to renew the franchise. If it passed Congress and Senate, then it's for the Executive branch to sign. Not happy with these steps, then campaign for changes in the present law.

Kung ang bill mo is 739.85 tapos ang binayaran mo is 740 dapat me .15 kang credit sa next bill mo pero wala!!!!!!!

  15. The result of non renewal will not be good for whoever will make the decision, none will benefit from the franchise not getting renewed but many will be affected including us consumers/viewers.
