Mister Pilipinas Worldwide 2024 titleholder Brandon Espiritu is facing online criticism after screenshots surfaced showing comments about Filipino identity and pageant representation.

The controversy erupted after Brandon allegedly wrote, “This country wouldn’t have a chance on the national stage without us halfies,” a remark many interpreted as diminishing the contributions of local Filipino candidates. Critics accused him of arrogance and cultural disconnect, while supporters argued his comments were taken out of context.

The debate intensified when screenshots involving fellow candidate Jether Palomo circulated online. In the exchange, Jether appeared to respond positively to a comment referencing allegiance to the American flag, while Brandon allegedly replied, “Raise that flag, brother.” The posts fueled criticism from those questioning whether some Filipino-American candidates identify more strongly with the United States while representing the Philippines.

As backlash grew, Brandon released a statement emphasizing that Filipino identity is not defined solely by bloodline, language, or birthplace. He called for inclusivity and acceptance of Filipinos from diverse backgrounds, writing, “You are one of us and you are enough.”

The controversy has since evolved into a broader discussion about identity, representation, privilege, and what it truly means to represent the Philippines on the global stage.

    1. mala James reid ang arrogance, may superiority complex..feeling above others. Pero in the long run, nawawala rin yan once these halfies start relying on the same audience they used to look down on—for money, clout and opportunities.

Ang lakas kasi ng loob nya to make that comment.

    1. Sooo true mamsh, my exact sentiments. Oo nga halfies sila, pero mapapaisip ka nalang din kasi what if ibang countries ang nirepresent nila na for sure hindi sila mananalo or magiging famous (yabang aside ba) kasi iba din ang sash factor natin e.

  5. Kapal ng mukha. You don’t bite the hands that feed. You should get out of the Philippines. Every business , brand, community and allies associated with you should be ashamed at what you have done. Please do us a favor and just leave. We dont need ingrate “halfies” like you!

  8. Halfies did well sa international pageant because of the Philippine sash factor,

Balik amerika, let see kung may chance kayo don.

  11. The thing is Philippines will keep sending halfies like them to pageants dahil totoo rin naman ang mga sinasabi nila. Filipinos are suckers for anything/anyone foreign… tao man, gamit o culture.
