WILDEST DREAMS (2020, Careless Music)

Starring: Nadine Lustre, James Reid and Massiah

Directed by: Dominic Bekaert

Executive Producers: Lox Valiente and James Reid

A NOT SO WILD RIDE

Not to be confused with Taylor Swift’s chart-topping song of the same name, wherein the wildly successful American singer-songwriter implores her former lover to remember her “in your wildest dreams”, Nadine’s latest opus is what she calls a “musical album”. Or as her press release claims, “it consists of six music videos that come together as one short film.” That having been said, this author thinks it would not be unfair to treat it as a movie.

Which is a shame. Because taken one by one, the six music videos are above average in production values, and can very well stand on their own. Unfortunately, strung together to create a movie, the work fails to gel into a coherent whole. Instead, it feels like a disjointed phantasmagoria, and what little thematic unity it tries to achieve is quickly lost, diluted in a claptrap of sound and light vainly attempting to simulate high aesthetics.

To be sure, the visuals are nothing less than arresting. It is evident that much effort and expense has been put into ensuring that the costume, props and lighting are no less than excellent. By this work, Nadine, donning carefully-selected clothes and accessories that totally become her, completes her transformation from goody-two-shoes to one of the glamorati. The generous heaping of state-of-the-art visual effects, coupled by the use of enough smoke to double the pollution level of Metro Manila, make for sequences that are dreamy, surrealistic, sometimes even mind-blowing. Paired with Nadine’s elegant stage manners and talent for physical pageantry, the resultant product is admirable.

But then, it is one thing to watch a superb three-minute music video, and another to sit through a thirty-three minute “musical album” with the same visual texture droning on and on. The producer makes an effort to run a common thread though the songs as they segue along, using as his device voice-overs stating certain philosophical thoughts, or Nadine making declarations of being an independent woman. “I give myself permission to trust my vision”, she intones, and proceeds, in short order, to allow herself “to be free”, “to be with other people”, etc. The attempt at profundity falls flat, though, and comes off as pretentious. Even the foray into environmentalism, via a narrated modernized myth of Nature as a “Diwata”, is not visited with much success.

Nor does the music stand out from the rest of other offerings. Nadine’s shift from mainstream pop and dance to a new sound – an amalgamation of chillwave and cloud rap, among others – may be a sign of her artistic growth, but it may alienate a significant chunk of her fan base, to whom such music may well go over their heads. Besides, her reading of the genre is middling at best; the homogenous tonality of all six cuts, sorely lacking in hooks; and the poetry of the lyrics which will sound esoteric to many, will become monotonous quite quickly. What will sustain interest are the visuals, but in the end, as I have said, they too shall begin to grow old: all gloss and glam rather than any meaningful mise en scene.

All told, Wildest Dreams may be Nadine’s dream of breaking from her past as one half of a tweetums love team, a declaration of her independence (from both James and Viva Films?) and the latest stage in her never-ending transmogrification. It may be her fondest dream at the moment, but the outcome is tame and tepid, hardly wild. This is a movie only for the most hardcore fan. In the middle of the film, Nadine paraphrases Blaise Pascal’s “the heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of.” Thus, this review must end with a quote from the early film Annie Oakley (1935, RKO Films), which perfectly summarizes Nadine’s efforts: “Close, Colonel, but no cigar.”

    1. Nadine forgot to include legit voice in making a music album.

One can produce a pageantry of pretentious garb in music videos, but it's a waste if the voice doesn't stand out.

    8. 1.52 ang narrow ng perspective mo sa music. Music is not just projecting one's vocal prowess. Music is self expression and making connection with the listener.

Maraming singers ang di magaling vocally, and at the same time walang iisang standards ng magaling na singer.

  3. Well these “critics” can be haters or praisers. While many others liked it, there are some few that don’t. Personally me, my girl, and basically most people I know find it very nice.

It’s also very refreshing to have a local artist na ganyan ha. So sana imbes na i-down ng iba, and expect something like Grammy’s level, sana na appreciate nila na this is a first from a local artist.

    3. 12:14 You are correct. I got curious, watched it and regretted spending my time on nadine’s video. It was so hard to watch. The fierceness and sexiness were so forced. Maybe if she stopped trying to be cool and stopped being so self conscious and just let it all out, it would’ve been interesting.

  22. kudos to director but to be honest, sana kumuha si james ng may legit singing talent para total package and walang tapon, if nadines into singing mag voice lesson muna siya parang kinakaen niya yung sinasabe niya dito mas nakaka appreciate yung visual kesa sa song. hoping na sumikat yung Dominic Bekaert, he is so good sana ganito ang abs cbn, mag explore ng ibang director no? or better makipag colab sa careless ni james marami siyang underrated talents hindi lang nabibigyan ng opportunities, hilig kasi sa loveteams eh! hay nako. charot

    1. I totally agree. The whole concept was really nice but nadine did not deliver. Bakit ganun siya lagi kumanta she hardly opens her mouth and you can tell that its throaty ipit pa. I cannot stand watching it kasi the voice was really horrible. I used to love jadine but theyve really gone way out of what theybused to do. I still love james though. Nadine should stop doing all those fillers cause she cannot really show emotions on screen anymore. I love james effort but i think he got the wrong artist to do the song.

  25. Filipino audience will never be happy for kapwa pinoy unless it is done internationally. Then they will be quick to say "proud pinoy here". Pag excel outside of the country at nirecognize ng ibang lahi dun lang pupurihin ng kapwa Filipino. It is a sad reality. At malabo na yatang mabago yan.

    2. Let’s give credit to the prod team pero let’s be real, mas deserve ng real artists na legit good singers & performers yung ganyang production. Edi sana naka 14M na ngayon like Moira’s song.

      Delete
    3. 2:44 Hindi naman, ako I’m proud of lea salonga, sarah geronimo.. you know, those with real singing talent. Si sarah na shy in real life, grabe maka project pag sumasayaw. Si nadine kasi masyadong self conscious kaya hindi maganda ang labas. She thinks if she opens her mouth too wide, if she moves too much mawawala ang pagiging cool and mysterious niya. On the other hand, they are very bold and daring to try out something new like this.

      Delete
    4. We need the production team, not the singer. Ilagay mo si KZ dyan, kahit si Moira, patok 'yan. We need people who want to give their best and take singing lessons. Hindi 'yung pa-cool and feeling foreigner na ipit ang boses.

Ganyan ba talaga kadaling ma-condition ng isip ang mga Pilipino? Tinataas pa ang iba samantalang dito, waley.

    2. Awts, nag critic pa nman ako dito. Lol, but I don't like kpop. True din nman sinabi mo. Hay, anyway alam nman natin na sa Pinas basta imported mas ginugusto.

    3. Good points 8:27 and 2:06. Di ko gets ang hate. Ok naman yung video. Pang international yung beats. Nadine's voice was a little weak but come on, it's a dance album. Hindi kelangan bumirit sa singing.

  50. Ang bitter naman. Porket umalis na si Nadine sa Viva. Frozen delight what?

  51. I respect attorney's opinion. But I would still give points to Nadine for trying something different. People may see it as her being wanna be, but I do see her own style in all she does. The auto tunes are the rave right now and it's not a crime to do it too. Even other artists do it too. People always say her voice is mediocre but I can list a lot of local artists who sings way worse than her. Bash all you want guys but Nadine is making her dreams come true whether you like it or not. I applaud her for that.

    1. Ay darling wala ka na magagawa kung naka-25M views yung naglalaba. Leave her out of this, wala sya kinalaman dito. Not a hater, I admire Nadine's artistry in this video, pero iba-iba ang opinion ng mga tao, can't please everybody, afterall. Wag na lang i-trigger yung fanbase ng iba para less toxicity. :)

  64. I tried watching coz yt recommended it but I wasn't able to finish it though. First track lang tas naweirduhan na ako sa gusto niya iparating. Inantok ako or clueless lang talaga ako sa music genre niya. Sorry

  65. It looks like an expensive college project to me. It was fine, all were executed ok, there some shots can be improved though. but the voice?

I would appreciate best if the song went to KZ Tandingan or Jake Cyrus as an experimental switch genre. from there it will be more like real interesting and bold track release in my opinion.

  67. Walang kinalaman yung visual album nya sa mga songs nya lyrically speaking especially if their aim is to pay homage to Philippine Culture na to the point nagmumukha na syang forced masabi lang na presenting as “atin”, nagmukhang for aesthetics na lang yung PH Culture na pinakita nila. And also, yung poetry nya wala ding kinalaman sa songs nya. Another point, considered pa bang visual album ‘to if 6/11 tracks lang ang may visual? Another point pa is, yung music nung mga tracks na ooverpower nya yung heavily auto tuned vocals ni Nadine. Yes, maganda yung visuals, set the standard talaga visually para sa local market pero the songs don’t make sense at all talaga, the album is also very one note lyrically. Maybe,,, the “visual album” (kahit 6/11 tracks lang may visuals pero you do y’all) would make sense kung papanuorin mo sya without sounds.

  68. Lyrically speaking walang kinalaman sa visuals.

  69. Maganda ang beat ng ibang songs. Beat lang ha, kasi halos di ko naman marinig at maintindihan ang kinakanta ni nadine.

  70. I watched it yesterday and I couldnt finish it. I'd rather watch some other OPM songs of Ben&Ben, Moira and even the jeje rappers. No offense meant to Nadine, she tried her best. The visuals are really something to applaud, I like the story telling, the beat of the 2nd song, (coz I wasnt able to finish it) are great for the OPM standards. I always make sure to watch 1 music video of OPM songs to support our local industry. But with Nadine, what lacking is her voice. I already know she's not really a great singer and I used to enjoy her old songs with James before, but this new album, nagmukha syang trying hard. I've read the comments and gosh, daming bashers duon from Bey fans. I honestly dont care if the concept was copied, after all uso naman yan eh, kaya lang nd powerful ang voice nya kung saan mas maganda sana kung kalevel nila KZ Tandingan, Sarah G or even Morisette Amon ang voice nya.Yung lang ang opinion ko.

  73. "..it is one thing to watch a superb three-minute music video, and another to sit through a thirty-three minute “musical album” with the same visual texture droning on and on"

The opposite for me. I checked it out of curiosity but stayed because of the beautiful visuals (fashion, animation(!), vfx, set design). I hope the local music industry takes notice of how a music video can be elevated.

In terms of the music, not really a fan at the first listen. But after re-watching the video, some songs grow on you and have come to like them such as Ivory and Dance with Danger. Her music may not be for everyone but the video was really worth it.
