Repost: Boracay Island to Close for Six Months Starting on April 26

President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday approved the recommendation of three government agencies for a six-month closure of Boracay effective April 26 to make way for the rehabilitation of the world-famous holiday destination.

Duterte arrived at the decision during the 24th Cabinet meeting in Malacañang where the proposal of the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources, Interior and Local Government, and Tourism was tackled, according to presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.

Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra described the discussion on the matter as “exhaustive,” adding calamity funds “will be activated to tide affected workers over.”

Before this, the Office of the President received the detailed memorandum containing the justification of the three agencies pushing for the closure.

Details of the memorandum have yet to be released by the Palace, which it had asked in light of concerns on the closure's impact on businesses and livelihood in the area.

The Palace had also considered a recommendation from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for the shutdown to be done in phases.

Stakeholders earlier said the impending closure of the prime tourist destination may result in at least P56 billion in foregone revenues and render 36,000 people jobless.

Duterte had said that he will shut down the island, which he described as a "cesspool," if its sewage problem would remain unresolved in six months.

He also threatened to slap sedition charges against those who would actively resist his plan to restore Boracay to its pristine state. —JST, GMA News

    5. I don’t like Duterte pero at least he did something to resolve the neverending issue ng Boracay. Tayo naman mag bebenefit in the end.

    1. Wala namang issue kung tayuan ng casino. Sa hawaii nga high rise buildings at commercial establishments pa ang nakatayo. Ang importante eh maayos ang sewage at waste disposal na kaya ipinapasara ang boracay ngayon kasi out of hand na.

      Delete
Kung gusto nila mag casino I’m sure sa Macau or Vegas punta mga tao not in Boracay. People go there because sa magandang beaches di para mag gamble.

      Delete
    3. may carrying capacity issue na ang boracay ngayon pa lang tapos dadagdagan pa ng casino? it's not just an issue of waste disposal mgmt. also have you read news of how the casinos built in Cambodia killed the small local enterprises?

      Delete
    4. 144, I’m not 137 but I’d just like to say na depende rin kase sa travel preferences ng tourist. Hindi lahat ng tourists eh virgin island backpacker types who prefer pure nature tripping. Some tourists prefer also the comfort and lavishness of first class amenities and entertainment while traveling to exotic locations and that includes high class restaurants, posh accommodations and yes, even leisurely activities such as casinos.

      Delete
    5. 1:44 Boracay is like the miami of the philippines. Party, night life, booze and all. Besides malaki ang boracay. May secluded parts na pwede ka mag muni muni, at meron ding commercialized parts. It’s nice to have something for every one. Mas madaming magandang amenities, the better. Tignan mo na lang yung good side. It will generate a lot of jobs sa locals.

Pakidemolish facundo. Madali ka.

      Delete
    7. I agree. Not all tourists prefer the same thing. Besides, parang minamarket naman yata as a luxury resort for asian families (chinese, japs, koreans, etc) yang itatayo nila dyan.

      Delete
    8. Luxury resort meaning not everyone can afford.

      Delete
    9. FYI. Hawaii has a lot of rules to protect the Island and its beauty. No Casinos are ever allowed to be built there. No billboards are to be placed anywhere on the Island to block the views. Hawaii protects their island very well. Hays.

      Delete
    10. As 3:14 said and based sa news, luxury resort daw ang gagawin meaning may posh accommodations and other amenities which includes the casino. Kung makareact iba dito as if casino lang ang ilalagay.

      Delete
    11. Casino constructuon talaga reason bakit isasara yan

      Delete

Plus, when it drizzled for a few minutes, baha agad sa isang part ng street nila (nadaanan namin when we took the trike going back to our hotel). Sana this closure will address those issues.

Disastrous.

      Delete
    3. Ganun kasi mga pilipino. Short term lagi iniisip. Yung panandaliang inconvenience at pagbabago malaking issue na. Case in point yung jeep modernization. Ngayon eto namang boracay closure issue.

    4. mahirap sabihin na mag isip ng long term para sa taong iniisip kung may pangkaen ba sila on a daily basis

    5. not all people who depend on boracay's tourism can cope a 6 mos loss of income. marami dyan on a daily basis nagsusurvive. so ano plano sa mga yon?

      Delete

    8. Sorry but I view the attempt at empathy as empty. Ayan problema sa atin, we really can't be bothered to put ourselves in another person's shoes. As somebody who has worked for real estate development, naniniwala talaga ako na hindi sagot ang total closure.

And yes 3:11! Pero at the end of the day, the truth is wala silang pagkukunan ng daily kita na ipangbubuhay sa pamilya.

I just hope the government has also prepared for that by providing for them job alternatives kung agit na agit silang ipasara completely ang Boracay. I hope the resort owners also find a way to continue earning (I cannot imagine how but malay natin may iba pa namang alternative), para hindi naman ganoon kadami ang jobless.

Maramig trabaho don for pinoy.

Kaya don’t act as if sobrang kawawa at inapi sila pag tinayo yan. Kung tutuusin dadami pa racket nila. Pagawa pa lang nyan will generate jobs for local construction workers, yung staff na ihihire nila locals din (tho not all), yung revenue at taxes na babayaran ng establishment na yan may mapupunta rin sa local govt nila. So pano sila kawawa?

      Delete
    6. On the contrary di po malaki ang bora, kaya nga nagkakaroon ng algae blooming at ng sewage problem kasi lampas na sa kaya ng bora ang inaaccommodate niya.

Have you been to china? Call me racist pero as an environmental scientist, i'm very much against the casino. I'm pro-boracay rehab, but that should be done for the benefit of the Filipinos!

      Delete
    9. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Ang kawawa sa huli yung isla. You see, the main issue here is not even the building of the casino, but the way the LGU and the business owners treat the island. Gets??? Yun ang dapat maaddress. Kahit pa dagdagan ng isang hotel casino resort whatever ang isla it shouldn’t make a big difference kung maganda at systematic ang pamamalakad.

      Delete
  20. This will surely be a hard lesson learned for the resort and business owners in the island. Nagpabaya sila kaya ayan nganga sila at malaki ang lugi ngayon. 6. The Boracay case is the best argument against Federalism 8:12AM.

    7. Agree on your points 2:52.

If Filipinos would really apply first-world thinking, then this is NOT the solution they would vouch for. First-world thinkers ARE daring in their efforts to make change BUT, they know how to plan to make sure there is minimal 'damage'. The biglaang announcement of closure is proof of how the present admin resorts to shotgun solutions instead of well thought-out plans. If this was something that has long been planned, matagal na din dapat in-announce - allowing businesses and individual workers there to set up alternative livelihood in the interim, and be ready for any kind of closure.

Pero hindi nila inisip yung kikitain nila in the next coming years kapag narehabilitate ang Boracay. Oh well.

  32. Agree sana ako pero hindi pinagplanuhan mabuti at halatang for the sake of the chinese casino lang.

    3. 8:16, Maikli kasi ang two months notice, teh. Especially peak season yang april. Yung iba nga ikakasal dun. For a 6 month unconditional closure, a one-year notice would have been appropriate.

    1. Wow lubos ang malasakit. Kaya pala umabot sa ganyan. The violations were due to permits still being given by local government and national government units. The non-movement of environmental initiatives for the past years were because the government did not care to listen and act (and by past years that means previous AND present admin included).

    1. Teh, WAKE UP.... whoever, will build casino in boracay, sinabi lang nila na for " rehabilitation " .

      Delete
    2. Sure, people can 'adjust'. So easy to say right?

Yung mga tao sa Boracay, especially the people na maliit at arawan ang kita - how do you expect them to find something to tide them over, in a very short span of time, for the next six months? THOUSANDS of people depend on the influx of tourists in Boracay dear. You can't just generate jobs for those THOUSANDS in a couple of weeks.

We have brilliant engineers and environmentalists who can come together to make that happen. There are always ways. It's just that this cray-cray government's only option are always shotgun solutions. Napaka-impulsive na for sure, walang proper planning.

  40. The shutdown is to make way for the building of the Casino by the Chinese. Bakit Boracay lang? And why during peak season? Here in Thailand yung mga main Marine parks and important islands nila di pinapupuntahan for a period of time during low season, at the same time rehabilitation at paglilinis is done.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I’m not against the closure but yun din naisip ko eh, why peak period? Pwede naman gawin during the off-peak period (late May to early Dec) when business is slow so konti ang revenue loss and it would give the people addt’l. time to look for temporary jobs that would tide them over.
