Anthony Bourdain, a gifted storyteller and writer who took CNN viewers around the world, has died. He was 61.

CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series "Parts Unknown." His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

Bourdain was a master of his crafts -- first in the kitchen and then in the media. Through his TV shows and books, he explored the human condition and helped audiences think differently about food, travel and themselves. He advocated for marginalized populations and campaigned for safer working conditions for restaurant staffs.

Along the way, he received practically every award the industry has to offer.

In 2013, Peabody Award judges honored Bourdain and "Parts Unknown" for "expanding our palates and horizons in equal measure."

"He's irreverent, honest, curious, never condescending, never obsequious," the judges said. "People open up to him and, in doing so, often reveal more about their hometowns or homelands than a traditional reporter could hope to document."

The Smithsonian once called him "the original rock star" of the culinary world, "the Elvis of bad boy chefs."

In 1999 he wrote a New Yorker article, "Don't Eat Before Reading This," that became a best-selling book in 2000, "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly."

The book set him on a path to international stardom.

First he hosted "A Cook's Tour" on the Food Network, then moved to "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations" on the Travel Channel. "No Reservations" was a breakout hit, earning two Emmy Awards and more than a dozen nominations.

In 2013 both Bourdain and CNN took a risk by bringing him to the news network still best known for breaking news and headlines. Bourdain quickly became one of the principal faces of the network and one of the linchpins of the prime time schedule.

Season eleven of "Parts Unknown" premiered on CNN last month.

While accepting the Peabody award in 2013, Bourdain described how he approached his work.

"We ask very simple questions: What makes you happy? What do you eat? What do you like to cook? And everywhere in the world we go and ask these very simple questions," he said, "we tend to get some really astonishing answers."

Bourdain's death happened after fashion designer Kate Spade hanged herself in an apparent suicide at her Manhattan apartment on Tuesday. Spade was found hanged by a scarf she allegedly tied to a doorknob, an NYPD source said.

Suicide is a growing problem in the United States. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey Thursday showing suicide rates increased by 25% across the United States over nearly two decades ending in 2016. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.

Usually mga so called depress e mga Narcissistic and mga selfish/self-centered kaya the more they accumulate the less they feed their soul of spirituality puro material and worldly matters!

    11. He has been always open about his struggles with depression. Not because you think he is living the life on TV ibig sabihin masaya na siya. There are things, places unknown that the camera can't venture. I hope you will not experience depression 7:49 its so hard to wake up everyday asking yourself why you're still alive. Instead of being grateful waking up,you will wish to die in your sleep. Sometimes you're happy then another minute you're sad for no reason at all. Hindi basta basta ang depression. The struggle is real, so real for us.

He might have had mental issues like depression but definitely nagkasaysay naman ang buhay nya for sharing the culture of food from different parts of the world. 8:37, how high and mighty you are, I, for one, do not want to have a friend like you. Wala kang empathy. You need to be educated about how the mind works not about the meaning of the word depression. You confuse the word with social and economic status. One thing obvious about your comment is in spite of writing something about feeding the soul of spirituality mukhang kelangan mo ng one huge dose or ration of feeding your soul with spirituality 24/7.

    1. Hi. Clinically diagnosed with depression and other MI here since 2007. Honestly, 'friends' and even family are only there and willing to listen and support sa simula. Eventually, nagsasawa rin. Napapagod, nang-iiwan. I rather talk to doctors. They're paid to listen to you kaya hindi sila magsasawa. They understand what I'm feeling and don't judge me or tag me as ma-drama, na nasa isip ko lang ang problema, for me to just get over it quickly. Dapat lang hindi ako maubusan ng pera for my doctors' fees para lagi akong may matatakbuhan kapag hindi ko na kaya. Hay.

  7. Wag kayo magmarunong. Depression is a sickness where the brain is telling you lies. Hindi ginusto nila ginusto ang ma-depress. Not until we acknowledge that depression is a sickness same as cancer, there will always be people like them taking their own lives. Pasalamat kayo hindi kayo mentally ill. Hindi nila ginusto ang empty feeling but you cannot win a battle you cannot even acknowledge if it's real.

    3. I like what you said, 8:05. In fact, I couldn't agree more because I've walked the same road. Ativan, Paxil, anxiety. Yes, its a sickness. Pero sana hindi mo na sinama yung 1st sentence mo which comes off as an admonishment. Something that we don't need right now in light of the grim subject. I think deep down, people are just trying to make sense of something that is incomprehensible. Personally, I'm still in shock, too. Mr. Bourdain doesn't know me. I know and I admire his body of work. But his death affects me so deeply, as if I lost a friend, too.

    6. Anon 10:51, ano’ng pinagsasabi mo diyan? Depression can be caused by chemical or hormonal imbalance. Pwede ring dulit ng envitonment dulit ng stress. Maraming factors. Hwag mong sisisihin agad agad yung depressed na tso. Hou are so judgmental. Hipokrito!

      Delete
    7. @10:26 bago ka magkaron ng chemical imbalance it means gumamit ka ng drugs or nagtake ka ng meds na hindi hiyang syo. Now yung hormonal e mood swings usually yun unless nagtake ng drugs like steroids or the like na magiispike ng testosterone or lower estrogen.

      Delete
    9. Late reply, FP, but just cannot accept 5:59's post. 5:59, you are so very wrong. The chemical imbalance while for some can be attributed to a previous drug intake there are people born with it and please lang ano ba ang pagkaintindi mo sa Mental Disorder? Do you even know anything about the endocrine system and how the brain works? Depression is a kind of mental illnes. And mag research ka about other hormones: cortisol and how it affects serotonin and dopamine. A person's decision is sometimes affected or caused by a lot of factors kaya hwag mong sabihin na niyakap nya ang sinasabi mong makamundong paniwala na para bagang macocontrol nya yun. There are other factors involved.

  28. I know depression. Been battling on and off. My fear to die saves me from doing something bad.. But sometimes when youre in too much pain u cant stop thinking about suicide. Thank God im still alive

  29. Maybe it doesn’t have anything to do with depression. Maybe he had a clear goal of ending his life on his own terms once he reached a certain age. Maybe at 61 he felt “it’s all good, I’m done”

    1. Ano’ng pinagsasabi mo diyan? The natural instinct for a person is to survive, to live. Hindi normal ang mag suicide.

    2. I remember an old guy who was like a dad to me telling me that once he reaches 80 he will kill himself because he doesnt want to live any further than that age.

    3. Some people don’t want to experience the ravages of old age or have the excesses of their youth like drinking, drugs etc catching up to them. Or people abusing them or burdening loved ones when they start losing their mental faculties. So they decide to bow politely out of life at their prime, while they still have control of their decisions. Quit while you’re ahead.

    4. 10:29 Tama si 11:31. There are people na may ganyang mindset. Hindi mo pa siguro na encounter. I personally know a friend who talked of killing himself when reaches a certain age. He wasn't being melodramatic about it, but citing the practical reasons.

  31. This seriously scares me. Everytime I hear news of someone committing suicide. I’ve been battling depression for years now. The thing with depression is hindi sya nawawala. Feeling ko lang nawawala sya then babalik sya. This is a lifetime battle. I’m scared that one day I’ll share the same fate as them. I’ve sought professional help na rin for years and it’s not enough. I don’t like opening up to other people because I hate the feeling na I’m just giving negative vibes. I don’t want to ruin their happiness.

Pero we will continue to fight :)

    2. Just think na "One more day" mga sisses. Pag sobrang lungkot nyo think na baka bukas hindi na ako malungkot and that it will get better, hold on for until tomorrow.
Also I would like to add dun sa mga tao na life isn't meaningless, life is what you make of it, so you have to make it count no matter how small.

    3. Anon 11:47 please remember that you are loved. A person very close to me is also battling depression. You are not giving negative vibes nor ruining the happiness of the people around you. I pray that you'll hve more strength. May this message reach you.

    4. Actually ako din anon 11:47 I have that depression. Tama ka, its hard to open it up to your friends kasi you don't want that negative effect to your friends plus they would always see me as bubbly and successful; I would stay up in bed for a month not meeting people. Since I can work at home, I can easily conceal it to my kids. I always have thought to end my life. KAso lang, ang bumabalik saken if I kill myself is yong stigma na maiiwan ko sa aking pamilya, Lalo na sa mga anak ko. Then I just pray and pray. It works naman.

    2. Robin Williams was diagnosed with dementia. It was not depression per se, he wanted to choose not to live and not be a burden.

    1. Hindi rin. May mga tao na ang iyong energy from their negative emotion and thinking they channel it to productive endeavors. Sir Winston Churchill has deoression but sabi nga he was a great man.Unfortunately sa iba eventually iyong mga negatibong damdamin it becomes overwhelming and it catches up to them. Kaya nga kaysa maging judgmental seek to understand. Mas makakatulong at makakaligtas pagiging maunawain kaysa maging mapanghusga. Wala tayo sa lugar humusga. Diyos lang.

    2. Marami ding succesful na masaya. They were able to put their success ingo good use, help other people all fof the glory of God. There is balance in thrir lide. Hindi lang puro work. They have the real support of family snd friends thru thick and thin. You just have to work at it. And most of all, you should allow yourself to enjoy lufe.
