Repost: Mother Lily: Christmas is No Time for Indie Films

Regal Films matriarch Lily Monteverde told reporters that she is saddened by the exclusion of "Mano Po 7: Chinoy" from the list of official entries to the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival.

"When I heard about it talagang umiyak ako," Monteverde admitted after announcing that the newest installment of the "Mano Po" franchise will hit theaters instead on December 14, one week ahead of the start of the annual film festival.

Monteverde added that she is worried that the poor will have no movies to look forward to this coming Christmas season, before she criticized the MMFF screening committee for filling this year's lineup with mostly independent films.

"Sana naman after this year, they [the MMFF screening committee] should understand --it's not that I'm teaching them pero all these poor people, mayroon silang mga bonus. Once they get their bonus, they bring the whole family to the movies to watch. ...Sayang lang nanghihinayang ako sa mga bata."

The veteran producer, who claimed to have arranged indie movie festivals in the past, also said: "There is a time for the indie movies. But not during the Christmas season. Christmas is for the family."

The official entries to the 2016 MMFF were announced last week, headlined by Jun Robles Lana's award-winning transgender film "Die Beautiful." The list became controversial following the exclusion of the aforementioned "Mano Po 7," Vice Ganda's "The Super Parental Guardians," and Vic Sotto's "Enteng Kabisote."

In defense of the list, Dr. Nicanor Tiongson of the University of the Philippines Film Institute, the head of this year's screening committee, said: "Let us not dumb down the audience."

  7. I'd have to agree to this. Though nothing wrong w/ change in MMFF to prioritize indie films, it's about the timing. I don't think international film festivals happen during Christmas time. Would've been better if MMFF included some of the family comedy films. There is still an audience who look forward to that.

    1. FYI, meron pong values-oriented MMFF entries ngayon. At pwedeng pwede sa kids! Duh, Saving Sally?

    2. Same. I actually agree with her in a way.

Kung binibigyan nila ng attention yun talaga, eh di may magandang venue for the indie films to be showcased.

      Delete
    3. Talaga ba Anon 11:28? Mas malaki pa kita ng mainstream movies sa indie dahil napapansin sila kahit di pasko, dahil may budget sila pang promote unlike indie. Buti nga this year we are being served ng iba naman, hindi ung masabing movie lang.

  27. Indie/Independent Films ay movies na ginawa without the support or financing of a major film Studio. Di porket Indie eh ibig sabihin eh "Intellectual" na. Indie films can be Comedy, Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Drama, etc. Basta di sya produced or financed by a major studio eto ay matatawag na Indie Film.

    1. same sentiment here

    2. yes, admittedly they were bad. but they were entertaining too. they were for kids who would enjoy a good laugh. do you think children below 13 would sit for 4 hours to watch a black & white slow film on Xmas day?

      Delete
    3. 3:13 you think ganyan lang ang indie? you do know what indie movies are, right?

      Delete
  29. I hope this will inspire all movie outfits to create quality films for mmff.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You're just bitter that the money--the bonuses rather--of your so-called poor people will not go into your pocket. I plan on watching all entries of MMFF. I am sure it is more of the big slap sa ego niya than the pseudoconcern for the masses.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Then you owe it to the "poor" to make movies worth their buck.

Seems like the big studios are just irked coz they are losing a cash cow.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with her. Some people spend their aguinaldo watching movies, especially Vice and Vic movies.. If I am poor I will not watch depressing indie movies.

I could go on and on and give you titles of comedy indie films. Please lang.

  33. What is the hate with this year's line up? Maybe it will push big studios to produce not only enjoyable and family friendly movies but also thoughtful and memorable to add to that.

Examples lang for kid movies that the entire family can enjoy: Magic Temple, Magic Kingdom, Batang X.

What is stopping big studios really? Gusto lang makagwa a profitable film under the guise na for the family daw.

    ReplyDelete
  34. ok na rin yung MMFF line up movies this year. Kaysa mag away away nanaman yung Enteng Kabisote at Vice Ganda Fans kung sino mas malaki kinita. at may daya dayaan pang nalalaman daw.

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is selfishness. Give chance to other producers. You cried because malaki mawawala sa inyo not because of poor people. Tsk tsk.

    ReplyDelete
  36. True. There's a perfect time to showcase indie films but the problem is mostly mainstream movies have a low quality of story which is other people is very tired of. Maybe next time film makers should think quality over quantity

    ReplyDelete
  37. sa panahon ngaun, yung Pasko ay para na lang sa bata. anong movie sa MMFF ang pwede nila panoorin? all movies included are all have "serious" theme.. baka most of them are rated13 pa because of the theme. of course, maganda rin sana na yung mga indie film ay kumikita because you are assured na may kalidad ang gawa nila. but i doubt kung kikita lahat ng movie sa mmf, baka Die Beautiful lang ang kumita dahil kilala ung bida.. mas dudumugin marahil sa December ang mga amusement centers kesa moviehouses.

    ReplyDelete

Kakainsulto.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  41. Parang misinterpreted naman ang sinabi ni mother. I think she meant kawawa not poor na walang pera. And it's true na kawawa naman ang mga families na ginawa nang tradition ang manood ng family movies pag pasko. I know most movies during mmff are crap in terms of quality pero in entertaining ok naman sya, natutuwa naman ang mga nanonood. There are a number of indie film festivals for the rest of the year and admit naman natin na di talaga maeenjoy ng mga bata ang indie films na nilalabas.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

I'm a fan of indie films at masasabi kong mas may substance, sense at nashoshowcase ng indie films yung realidad ng buhay.

Thank you MMFF selection committee!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Honestly may point naman sya, I think they should have made it as a broad choice of movies.

They can still spend their hard earned bonus to watch feel good movies. Manalo man yan sa MMFF o hindi.

Plus indie movies deserves it. Kung gusto mo makapasok ayusin mo movies mo.
