FB Scoop: Lea Salonga Shows Courage Amidst Facing a Racist America

  1. She's not alone with the same thoughts. Amy Tan, the author, is afraid too because of her lineage. However, the Americans have themselves to blame if they feel the wrong person won because the turn out for this election is about half of qualified voters. This 4years will be really interesting as the president-elect plans to juggle both his business and his presidency.

    1. Historically, Lea has shown the chip on her shoulder when she posted a rant on social media about being discriminated against in Broadway. It was for a role in the production of My Fair Lady, in which she was angered that she was not even "invited" to audition for the role of Eliza Doolittle. So, what does this tell us? That America did not become racist overnight after 11/08/16, but it has been for a long time. And that Lea has a diva attitude and a false sense of entitlement to think gay she would be "invited" for auditions for a lead role in Broadway.

Lea's public display of disapproval of the US Presidential election results by way of this post, is nothing but an attempt to instill fear and anger in the hearts of the hardworking Filipino-Americans against the country where we now live and work and are building a future for ourselves and our children. It is very biased and self-serving. If she wants to lament the plight of the Illegal Immigrants in America, then she should just say it outright and not use those of us, who work and live here peacefully.

    3. Well said 2:09 Lea is a sheeple and refusing to wake DJT will not do harm in this country. The hate is coming from the other side. The silent majority had spoken.

    8. True 2:09. Lea's hypocrisy is unbelievable. I remember when Miss Saigon was coming to Broadway from the West End, the Actors' Equity opposed her being the lead because they wanted to have equal rights for their members to audition for the lead part of Kim. But Lea was protected and no Caucasian nor African-American nor Asian-American actors were allowed to audition for the part of Kim. That was a racist move, if I ever saw one. But according to Lea in that post, she is scared of being racially discriminated against because of the election outcome. Bandwagoner is what she is. Alam na.

    9. Ms. Lea, it's all in your head. A lot of Filipino Americans voted for DJT and you can't take that rights away from them. Did you vote at all, if not, then your thoughts and political views are irrelevant. If you want your voice be heard, then become a citizen first, otherwise keep your misplace views to yourself.

#sawsawpamore

  4. It's so melodramatic. It's not like you wake up the next morning after Trump won and racism prevailed all over America. There's always racism everywhere and anytime. You can't eradicate that because we can't control the minds of people. . But as freedom loving citizens, we won't let racism dominate the country. Maybe you should give Trump a chance to do his job first. If we don't like the way he serves our country, that's the only time we, as citizens, will do something. For now, let's not pre-judge him.

Yung mga dating tahimik lang at sinasaloob ang pagiging racist, sexist, and bigot eh mas vocal na ngayon dahil alam nilang Trump has the same views.

      Delete
    2. @12:53 I agree with you. Racism is everywhere. I voted for Clinton but I already accepted the fact na nanalo, by electoral votes, si Trump. Nagbabago ang tao. Malay natin, magka milagro.

      Delete
    4. @2:17 I hear you. There's a lot of undocumented immigrants in the country. Unfortunately, they enjoy a lot of privileges like the taxpayers do and it's not fair for us to work our ass off while these people can work under the table and don't pay taxes. It's not that we discriminate them but if they get caught, too bad. We came to this country legally. They should do the same.

      Delete
    5. My cousin was killed in a road rage incident because a Latino driver was calling him out for being a "slow" Asian driver. That driver turned out to be an illegal with no driver's license. My cousin was on his way home from working the graveyard shift. Lahat basta "feeling superior" sila they will discriminate against you simply because they think in their ignorant minds that you "look" inferior to them. I do not agree with Lea's rant which is similar to all Hollywood and liberal types. I'm for the crackdown of illegal immigration in this country.

      Delete
    6. 2:37 I agree with you.

      Delete
    7. @1:01 gender/age/height/school racism? Of course that's requirements that would fit to a specific job.

      Delete

      Delete
    9. 1:06 when an employer requires specifics on gender/age/height/school/race, it is a form of racism here in the US. I remember when I was in the Philippines applying for a job, it specifically states on the ad that they prefer those who are graduates from prestigious schools like UP, La Salle, Ateneo, UST. I'm a Tomasian, btw. Now looking back, I realized how discriminating it was like looking for a job back there. And if you think that's normal, then you don't know what an equal employment opportunity means.

      Delete
    10. Isama mo na rin diyan sa schools. During my younger years, sa elementary, may star section pa. Meaning, there was a hierarchy. And then the kulelats. No I was never in the star section but even then, I found it too unfair and far too demeaning na igu-grupo kayo according to intelligence. It would have helped if they keep it mixed and encouraged yung buddy system instead. Yung nagtutulungan imbes na may distinction agad. So naturally, the star section often looks down on the lowly sections plus they get top billing sa mga school productions and choice roles sa iba't-ibang school activities. Doon palang sa ganung sistema, they already planted the seeds of discrimination.

      Delete
The star section students learn at a faster pace, so the standard for learning is higher. There is a formula for sectioning students so that intellectually, certain types can be around those who are of the same level of intelligence with those who have the same abilities. So that they can all learn at the same pace. It also makes the grading easier and to minimize the learning curve the lesser intelligent students have to go through and gpa to catch up to if they were put in a class with those more intelligent than they are.

      Delete
    12. Also, I remember when I was in the Philippines looking for a job, they would require applicants to submit their bios with photos. What if you don't look pretty on the picture, are there less chances you won't get an interview?

      Delete
  5. True. I rode a subway in L.A. once since it was so traffic on the freeway; then this woman comes up to me and says that I should move to the back of the train, after that she insulted a black woman by telling her to get a job and in addition, also told a latino teenager to refrain from drugs... After that experience, I'm never taking public transport in the U.S. again šŸ˜‚

I am based now in ME and there is already government advisory to their citizens who are visiting or residing in US to take care and be cautious while in public. That should they find themselves subjected to racial slurs, they should keep calm and not let themselves be drawn in fights. If threatened, they should walk away and seek the help of authorities or their consulates for assistance. A few months before, the other advisory for them was to refrain from using their national attire while abroad after one nasty incident when a hotel businessman guest was falsely reported as a terrorist by a hotel staff because he was wearing kandura.

  31. "I never experienced racism in the US, therefore racism doesn't exist". Yan ang logic ng mga commenter here.

Ibig sabihin, because you've never experienced hunger, it also means that world hunger doesn't exist?

    1. Inday, 8:46! You've drawn your own wrong conclusion. People are just attesting that they have not experienced racism against themselves. They never acknowledged that racism doesn't completely exist.

  32. I voted for Hillary but I can give Trump a chance(as if I have a choice!) I hope people will take Lea's post just a precaution of what lies ahead and be prepared. Do not take it to aggravate fear in you. It's sad when post like this can do more harm than good.

  33. These liberals/leftists are simply spoiled brats who didn't get what they want. They live in their own bubble that they know what it's right for the country. People who voted for Trump are the silent majority who were forgotten , the uneducated college people . They are the children of those parents who lost their jobs , living paycheck to paycheck , lost their pensions . It's sad that these liberals cannot even grasp the real issues in America.

  34. The number of racists is the same before and after the election. People do not magically started hating a group or groups of people after choosing Trump. Hillary supporters did not get sprayed "love dust" after exiting the polling booth.

  35. My african-american coworker told me that they were taught by their elders to fear the white people because they are out against them. They are reminded to be always careful, don't date white girls, stay out of the white people's way and such. As an adult now, he realized how ridiculous that was. Instead of encouraging people to love, it instill fear in their hearts. He was taught to expect the worse. His grandfather and father were pastors, btw.
