Fate or faith - what brought about Manny Pacquiao's loss?

Did Manny Pacquiao's devastating loss to Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez send a strong message to the erstwhile pound-for-pound king?

Amidst the busy-ness of Christmas holidays, Manny has once again demostrated his magic to unite the nation to be witness to his greatness in the boxing ring. But sadly, the euphoria and the excitement died so fast towards the first half of Pacman's 4th fight with the Mexican. The manner of his loss was a very big upset, was totally unexpected, totally un-Pacquiao, having been knocked out cold and motionless in round 6.

The cameras caught the very tearful and hysterical Jinkee seeing her husband knocked out lying on the canvass. But more than that, was what the world witnessed -- the sight of the very powerful Pacquiao splattered face flat on the floor ... weak and defenseless.

People and observers who have suddenly turned boxing experts and life gurus were quick to give unsolicited analysis. What caused him to lose that fight?

- short preparation
- carelessness and too much confidence
- lack of focus
- fate
- all of the above

Among others, it was his faith, his allegedly leaving his Catholic religion that was the most controversial. It sent Mommy Dionisia going ballistic and blaming the born again Pastors for her son's misfortune. In the above situations, it is only Manny who has the final say what had gone right and wrong.

On the other hand, people will always have a say, to blame Pacman or to love and be proud of him inspite of. Whether he fights again or retire is his own business. But one thing is certain -- Manny Pacquiao is the only and the greatest Filipino boxer ever who gave us immeasurable pride as Filipinos!

    2. Sure. Because there is no other plausible explanation for Pacquiao's loss. It cannot be lack of strength and conditioning training or his focus on other things aside from training.

Give credit where credit is due. Sore losers.

    3. I agree google nyu about questions raising about Marquez's gained muscle. Ngayun Lang na 38 na sya biglang magka macho? Ang liit Nya nung fight Nya ni mayweather na kailangan Nyang magpalaki ng katawan nun, plus NASA corner Nya ang admitted distributor ng PEDs.

  11. It was all for show! How can he easily be knocked-out? Sa tigas ng mukha ni Pacman? I doubt. Plus, pansinin niyo, last seconds siya ng 6th round na-knockout. Parang make or break ang peg kaya ang sarap sa pakiramdam kapag nanonood ka. Meron pang issue with drugs and all. Of course, lahat ng fans ni Pacman di papayag na walang rematch because of that issue tapos di rin naman papayag fans ni marquez na may nagddoubt kay sige, REMATCH na lang. Happy2x ang mga producers kasi money2x na naman ang biyaya. Pupusta ako, lalaban pa si Pacman next year for a rematch tapos siya naman ang mananalo. Anong makukuha nila para sa isang show? Dearest people, boxing may be a sports pero mas business yan. Mas entertaining, mas maraming panghila sa tao, mas maraming fights, MAS MADAMING PERA. Sorry, but I wasn't impress w/ Jinkee's little show either. Dati pa madumi ang boxing, wala naman masyadong nag-iba.

U think he would risk his reputation as the best fighter of the world and allow himself to be knocked out at the 6th round? isip-isip ka nga!If this was a cooked up fight, paabutin nila yan till the last round and hindi KO at the 6th round. get my point? Bago ka mag-assume, medyo gamitin mo muna utak mo , puede?

    5. It's possible na strategy lang nila ito to get mayweather to finally agree to fight manny. kasi kung yung sa last fight nya na natalo din sya by decision hindi pa rin kumagat si mayweather, baka ito yung way na matuloy ang long-awaited fight nila. although risk lang is papangit ang record ni manny kasi knockout on 6th round nga naman. pero kung matuloy sila ni mayweather, mas malaking pera ang kapalit kasi siguradong sold-out yan sa dami ng manonood pati sa pay-per-view, at kung manalo si manny sa fight na yon mas malaking bagay kasi undefeated si mayweather. parang sa chess lang naman yan, kailangan mo i-give up ang ilang pieces mo para ma-checkmate ang kalaban...

  15. The Rosary was with Manny P. in many of his fights. We've seen him wearing it during his fights but since he became a "born again christian", The Rosary was no longer there in his last 2 fights and in both fights, he was beaten. Maybe it was just a coincidence or maybe not but for many catholics, the Rosary is a very powerful symbol of our Faith and taking it for granted has its consequences. For once, i tend to believe Mommy D.

    10. Don't underestimate what Satan can also do. It might be that Satan has chosen this perfect timing to make Pacquiao lost the fight so we'll get confused. Either Catholic or Christian, for as long as you have faith in Christ, it doesn't matter. Let's also dig deeper what lessons or teachings God wants us to learn from his lost. Whether good or bad, it's not the situation that we should give emphasis with, it's how you get through in that situation with an understanding that everything is God's will.

  16. He got careless on the last few seconds of the 6th round. Usually boxers would wait for the bell since there is already a 10 seconds warning from the timekeeper but he still move forward to attack Marquez.

I also think he lacks preparation. He spend more than a month in Gen. Santos training without Freddie Roach to supervise him. Roach didn't even wen to Gen. Santos.

Maybe there is already some strain in their relationship between Pacman and Roach. Coz Roach wanted Pacman to spend all 3 months training in LA but Pacman disobeyed him and he trained in Gensan instead before training in LA.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Marquez was more prepared than Manny Pacquio. With Manny's responsibilities at congress plus his involvement in showbiz and time spent with his bible studies, surely, Marquez had more time to train for the fight. The result was evident.

Wish ko lang he concentrates on boxing na lang at huwag na siya mag pulitika. Pero baka pagod na rin siya, ewan. Para siyang uninspired kasi. Wala naman point yung fight nila ni Marquez, wala man lang totoong title, pero tinanggap niya pa rin for the money. Sayang tuloy ang record at ang legacy. 30. Manny Pacquiao accepted his defeat and most of filipinos of his loss too. Unfortunately, for those who always watch boxing have doubts on Marquez?. When he was fighting with Mayweathwer, he was so drained, tired, and dehydrated. He could not even take Mayweather's punches. But, these two rematch with Pacquiao, he all of a sudden became a super human. In the first round, he was tired, getting beat up. Second round, he became strong.?...DRINKING GATORADE??? this substance is mixed with dextrose and electrolite. The sad part, was no one ever call it out on Marquez drinking the gatorade. This is boxing, which is all about conditioning. This is football or Baseball that you allowed to take this drink.

How can a 39 years old, with broken nose, no mouthpieace, and a wobbly condition in the sixth round was able to throw a super punch like Marquez did to Pacquiao? Pacquaio had been punched by big and best boxers like Dela Hoya, Mosley, Bradley, Cotto, Hatton but able to take those punches. ??????

I accepted Manny's deafeat, but I hope Marquez find his drug testing POSITIVE!!!!

    1. goodness gracious! para mo na ring sinasabeng ibang Diyos ang sinasamba ng mga born again christian! how ignorant can you get? you're giving catholicism a bad name! ikaw na mismo nagsabi, THERE IS ONLY 1 GOD. parehong Diyos lang ang sinasamba natin, magkaibang paraan lang ng pagsamba. tsk tsk! magbasa ka ng bibliya nang maliwanagan ka. feng shui feng shui ka dyan! sa yo yata applicable yang sinasabi mo eh. ano ba talaga, sa Diyos ka o sa feng shui??? becoz like what you said, YOU CAN'T SERVE 2 MASTERS AT THE SAME TIME. engot!

    4. at anon 8.40. Kung one GOD nga lang talaga ang kinikilala ng mga born again at ng mga katoliko then why is the latter bashing the catholic church for their rituals? You said magbasa ng bible. The bible should not be interpreted word per word. There are alot of verses and words scholars and professors still dont understand. Kaya please lang wag magmarunong. Maka engot ka wagas lang. Ganyan ba turo sa church nyo? LOL

    7. it's not being ignorant. Feng shui is a way of nature. Ang sabi nga kung walang mali bakit iibahin? & with what happened to pacquioa it just shows that he has gone the wrong way.

Pacquiao is still the best for me, win or lose, he's still that humble man from Gen San who takes defeat with dignity.

  45. Its not the winning, its how you play the game. With all due respect to other religions, but for me his sudden change of believe might probably have brought him to his situation. On the other hand, mabuti na din na maranasan nya ang matalo, maybe its also god's way of saying. "ITS ENOUGH SON, I HAVE BETTER PLANS FOR YOU." kung hindi sya titigil, baka yung perang kinita nya ay maubos lang din sa pagpapagamot nya.BELT lang ang mawawala sa kanya, hindi naman ang kayamanan at pamilya nya. His pinoy fans are still proud of him.

    1. yes i do believe that God makes all things happen for a reason, so I would think God does have plans for Manny after this Loss. Maybe it's for him to retire from boxing & concentrate on being a good & honest PUBLIC SERVANT. as Manny the champion boxer he brought us Filipino pride, but as Manny the congressman he could directly help his fellowmen. i sincerely HOPE this is what is next for Manny.

  47. The answer is all of the above. It is his second loss in succession, maybe he should consider retiring. I think he lacks focus and his new-found religion is taking up a lot of his time and attention. It will be sad to see him continue to fight just for the money.

  55. Manny Pacquiao: You've given the Filipinos worldwide immense pride and you've certainly mapped the Philippines in the boxing domain. Wherever I go in the world, once I say I'm Filipino, 7 out of 10 would go, "Ohhh, Manny Paaak-yao!!!"

And you're right, you win some, you lose some. That's modesty and humility at best for me. Graciousness in defeat. Even heroes do fall sometimes and like the mystical Phoenix, they rise again.

    Thanks very much, Manny.

God emotionally and spiritually prepared him sa pagkatalong ito. maraming taong nabubuang sa unti-unting pagbagsak ng fame. but not Manny! thanks to what he believed in. let's leave it at that, kung saan naniniwala ang tao sa salvation ng kaniyang kaluluwa, so be it!

  61. faith and lack of practice. his changed of faith really affected his relationship not only to his family (mommy D). People saying that Soriano and Time giver jowa made Pacquiao a "Faithful and family man" .. Dont claim that eh yung jowa ni time giver dami sideline.. It was his personal choice to save his relationship to Jinky who laid a annulment papers before his bradley fight (born again na sya noon)..

I can feel mommy D's sentiment.. sana na d tinalikuran ni Pacquiao ang religion nya at paniniwala nya..Only mommy D can feel the sorrow of Pacquaio kahit sabihin pa nya okay okay.. At isa pa okay lng palitan ni Pacquaio religion sana at maintain respect sa dati nya religion pero hindi.. His mom asked him tickets to go to Rome for canonization ni Padre Calungsod but he insisted wala sya pera... siguro nadonate na sa church ng bf ni Time giver.. :) hehe ..sa ayan tuloy matutuluyan ka na wala pera.. magiging Hatton na career mo sa boxing ...

Eh 10% ng 20M USD nya mapupunta sa pastors nya.. na related sa bf ni Time Giver.. Kaya ba wala si Time Giver kasama ng Pray over.. Ganyan ba born again nabubuhay din sa Chismis like Time Giver.. so Pls lang wag ng maki-argue about religion..

He was on top of everything before..and when you're at the apex of your career, there's no other way to go but down..that's life..and on the issue on faith, his loss could be seen as a 'punishment' of sort for changing his religion but it could also be seen as a trial of his faith on his new religion..

  67. It's actually both irritating and funny that people are fighting over who has the better religion. I am a Deist. People like me are frowned upon by people who believe in divinity, but sa mga sitwasyon na ito, natatawa ako sa inyo. Nag aaway-away kayo tungkol sa isang bagay na hindi pinaniniwalaan ng taong tulad ko.

Pacman's wins and losses doesn't have ANYTHING to do with his faith. If I were a Catholic/Christian/Born Again, I'd be happy to know he remained faithful to his God despite everything, buti nga hindi siya sa ibang nilalang nananampalataya.

YOU people should be a good example sa relihiyon ninyo.

  74. It is possible NOT to lose in boxing, just look at Mayweather, he has 0 loss. Anyway thank you Manny for my for my P5k!!! The minute I learned he attended that religious service, (instead of the usual mass) I placed my bet on Marquez. Halos lahat ng athletes worldwide may practice/pamahiin/seremonyang sinusunod, whether abstaining from sex, drinking milk, praying etc. For some reason they do work and once they stop their winning streak stops too.
