GMA Network's Response to PFF Statement About Arnold Clavio

Below is the official response from GMA Network to the statement of the Philippine Football Federation about Arnold Clavio:

Official statement of Arnold Clavio on the Azkals issue:

GMA News anchor Arnold Clavio responds to criticisms about the recent remarks he made about the sexual harassment case currently faced by some members of the Philippine Azkals:

-Arnold Clavio

    1. kapuso ako kaso nadismaya ako sa ginawa nila. nagmataas ihi pa. lam mo di ako fan ng azkals pero clearly may mga mali sa mga sinabi ni clavio. below the belt. sa mga taong in denila na he said nothing wrong, lam kong may naramdaman kayo at some point na parang may mali pero galit lang kayo sa azkals kaya nagbubulag bulgan kayo. unscripted? all the more they have to sanction para maging mainggat mga news reporter nila sa pagbibigay ng opinyon.

fyi di lang po kahit anong opinyon. opinyon sana na objective dahil news reporter sila. yun mga nagdedefend dyan na "opinyon nya yun eh". eto kasi yun. si clavio ay hindi lang isang pribadong tao. kung pribado sya, murahin pa nya azkals people wouldn't give a fart. infront of the camera he's a public figure. he gave his opinion infront of the camera. he gave his opinion as a broadcaster whose opinions should be objective and not based on personal biases. so sana magets ng mga taong defend ng defend dyan ng "eh opinyon nya yun." Ang mga opinyon po kasi sana ay nilulugar. now if he had made his remarks off-cam eh di walang isyu kasi that time he's not clavio the broadcaster but clavio as a private citizen.

gma kala ko ba walang kinikilingan? you just ruined your reputation and credibility. i hope clavio's worth all this.

Exactly my same sentiments. And to think he's considered as one of the pillars of gma's news and public affairs. Yes, we're all entitled to our own opinion, but he could've reined it in a bit, and tried to be objective about his comments.

  3. Sexual harrasment cases can happen anywhere and to anyone, being a Filipino and knowing the culture by heart does not guarantee that you will not become an offender.

I am not a fan of the AZKALS, I don't even watch their games, and if what the two members did to Cristy Ramos was true, I too would like to see them punished. But Mr. Clavio's harsh remarks about the players not being real Filipinos and doesn't have the heart of one was completely uncalled for. He even ranted about the players' looks and attitude that they feel they're God's gift to women WTF?!? Who gave Mr. Clavio the autority to lambast these 'boys' on national television? What drove him to think that he can publicly humiliate the AZCALS and get away with it?

In my opinion Mr. Arnold Clavio should be made accountable for his actions the same way the AZCALS would if they're proven guilty. END OF RANT

    2. Kaya nga ang question after is "Who gave Mr. Clavio the authority to lambast these 'boys' on national television?"

The AZCALS are INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY, yung comments ba nya had anything to do with the sexual harassment case? i.e. "ang yayabang nyo kasi", "Ampopogi nyo eh noh, ...", "eh hindi naman mga pilipino kasi yan.." "nagpapanggap lang naman kayo na kayumanggi" These statements were uttered in a matter-of-fact manner, which is completely unfair to the other players that we're not even there. This is what you call TRIAL BY PUBLICITY and CHARACTER ASSASSINATION. Again, The AZCALS are INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY, Once they're proven guilty, THEN and ONLY THEN can Mr. Clavio really say what he wants to tell them in the manner that he did. gets mo na AnonymousMar 18, 2012 09:17 AM?

tsaka agree ako sa isa nilang kasama dun sa show who said "wag naman natin sila lahatin." kasi nga naman 2 lang kinasuhan diba? pero clavio made sweeping statements about the WHOLE team. kaso nung pinoint out eto kay clavio, he shut her up by saying na masasabi nyang lahat yun eh kasabwat kasi lahat sila nagtatawanan. obvious talaga may personal galit si clavio sa azkals. bakit kaya?

  4. Exactamente!

    1. dear ate, ganito kasi yun. clavio is not just a private citizen. if he were one, he can cuss the azkals to his heart's content and no one would ever give a fart because that is his opinion. but why are people reacting to his opinion? because he's also a public figure. infront of the camera, he is a public figure and a newscaster which is why he cannot just say anything he wants on television. yes, there is such a thing as freedom of expression. but as a newscaster, he has this added responsibility of being careful with his choice of words. their opinion as newscasters should be objective and free of any biases.

clearly what he said about the azkals were subjective, full of sweeping statements and biases. why do i say that? the tone he uses is a give-away which shows his annoyance with the azkal players' good looks and popularity. add to that his bias that the azkals did commit sexual harassment when in fact the case hasn't been solved yet. then the unnecessary remark about their "pagkapilipino." why unnecessary? because sexual harassment has nothing to do with race. even filipinos commit it, unfortunately. but he still took jabs at their lineage. his derogatory statements may have hurt other half-pinoys around the world. he got carried away with his feelings which shows how subjective he was at that time.

had he said his piece off-cam, it would've been okay. it would've been taken as his opinion as a private citizen. but he voiced out his one-sided, subjective and bias opinion infront of the camera as a newscaster who's supposed to be objective and supposedly part of the gma news department whose slogan is "walang kinikilingan, walang pinoprotektahan."

At that point of the show, they were DISCUSSING as NORMAL PEOPLE, not reporting some news that is a part of the clause of "journalism". There's such a thing as having opinions, right? Like for example, here's my opinion which is probably come of as a different one from each of the people who are still dwelling on the topic. As much as I can't change yours, then of course, you can't change mine, as I've already formed it upon the conclusions I've drawn from what I've seen and heard. If they have a normal person as a GUEST in their show, then they won't be screwed, right?

On the topic of RACISM, COLONIAL MENTALITY, and PATRIOTISM (I believe THESE should go altogether):
There's SO MUCH RACISM ALL OVER THE WORLD and there's SO MUCH COLONIAL MENTALITY, I must say. Have we all FORGOTTEN ABOUT THIS? And there's a lack of PATRIOTISM in our country. Since some blogs are talking about "what a true filipino" really is, then we might as well think of what FILIPINOS have become. FILIPINOS allow other people who shine through in THEIR own land, whereas in fact we all know that if they were making big bucks or have a career in wherever place they were born, grew up, they wouldn't give a fuck to the Philippines.
On RACISM, correct me if I'm wrong, but I still believe that somewhere in the culture and the trait of a Filipino, there's what we call being respectful of a woman. If I admit that I still believe that FILIPINO MEN have these traits, and say that I believe that THESE DISRESPECTFUL ATHLETES didn't display these traits and thus, I don't think they're FILIPINOS in that sense, would that make me racist? I suppose yes. Then call me one, because I still believe in the core values of Filipinos.
And to those who are saying that Filipinos are racist. Yes, FILIPINOS are RACIST EVEN TO THEIR OWN RACE. Haven't anyone noticed this? Most FILIPINOS resent their own countrymen because they embarrass themselves of their doing. But haven't they even thought that not everyone is born with riches? THat the situation, the government, the poverty and lack of education have brought it upon them? That no matter what these people do, they can't do anything really good because they have to feed themselves, thus grabbing the worst-luck opportunity that come their way. I mean, why is it that it's very rare for a Filipino of "pure breed" able to play to our local leagues, to promising universities/colleges? WHY? Because our countrymen are not even given a chance to GO TO SCHOOL, learn, and even study. So there. Yes, FILIPINOS are RACIST.
But FILIPINOS are also not PATRIOTIC anymore. Some of us are even MORE PROUD for the people who bring PRESTIGE to the Philippines despite the fact that they aren't really Filipinos. I didn't mean to go way overboard, but since we're discussing what "RACISM" is all about, might as well be reminded of the thought of COLONIAL MENTALITY and PATRIOTISM. Being OPEN MINDED to the CULTURE outside our COUNTRY should have their LIMITS, same things as to the extent of LOVING and SUPPORTING your own countrymen. And haven't we noticed that Filipinos patronizes FOREIGN PEOPLE, FOREIGN LAND, and FOREIGN products much more?

    3. The issue about Mr. Clavio's & Ms. Santos' statement, about being QUOTED as racism is plain stupid. Have we not got any broad mindset? They used harsh words. So what? It was too straight forward and that's probably caught offensive. But if you think about it, what they're saying is right. Harsh but definitely, the truth. Should it be toned down a bit for "ka-plastican/showbizness"? Probably. But IF YOU GUYS ARE SMART ENOUGH, you would get what they truly mean.

As a Filipino, I believe in our culture FILIPINO MEN are born to be a gentleman. This may not be applicable to other races as in their culture, girls are slutty whores or plain easy. Remember when Filipinas are referred to as Maria Clara? I don't think that having these kind of women nowadays is anything but an illusion, as I believe that there's still a big majority of them that do exist. But let's not forget that in the Philippines, WOMEN are treated with respect. And once a woman is disrespected, a MAN, MANS UP and defends her by all means. Filipino men know how to show some respect to women, even in modern times. Have we forgotten that this was the TRUE ISSUE after all? A smart person would know that the remarks made by Mr. Clavio and Ms. Santos were in reference to THE ATTITUDE that these athletes have done--their DISRESPECT to Ms. Ramos, in which, the DISRESPECT isn't a part of the FILIPINO CULTURE, or a TRUE MAN's characteristic, for that matter. That was what that "RACISM" comment that you guys are making a big fuzz about is really about--the attitude displayed, the culture that these athletes haven't adapted to yet. Much more, I believe that since they are educated and they know atleast one woman, then they should know what "respect" means. It's a surprise how these athletes get all the support with their attitude.

You guys take things too literally. The comment wasn't literal about the skin color. Not even about where we're born, from whom we were born, or even the passport we were holding. Their comments/opinions were a metaphor of the CULTURE, the TRAITS, and the ATTITUDES that these disrespectful athletes have shown AT THAT MOMENT (take note of the emphasis) they verbally harassed a woman who was simply doing her job.

Now, where's the legal action or the BIG NEWS or ISSUE on that? I hope you guys don't forget that you were born by your mothers, have a sister, a daughter and this issue should be called for.

  30. Whatever Arnold Clavio says, mali pa din. He should have not said that. He is a media personality for heaven's sake and a lot of people listen to him. Magiging bias lang yung mga tao for what he did.

Also, even though GMA says na discretion ng journalist nila na mag-air ng opinion, its not an excuse to not be involved. Talent nila yun and sa GMA pinalabas yung segment na yun. Its their responsibility to act accordingly to the issue.

They are just deepening the problem. Tinatry nila pagtakpan yung talent nila when obvious na obvious naman that the person is maligning the team.

They are just putting their network in bad light.

Stick to the issue and sagutin nila yun sexual harassment case yun lang why divert the issue to arnold clavio.

  33. There lots of ways to get your point across without sounding racist, if all of you are claiming that this issue is getting out of hand hence; Arnold shouldnt have made rants about Azkals being a true Filipino or lack of which if I may say so. In my opinion Arnold and the rest of Unang Hirit Hosts made out of context comments. We are not glorifying these bastards from commiting such "crime" against women, but "harassment" see no colour. These happens everyday. If they are found guilty, then so be it; no questions asked let them rot in jail.

    1. Hahahaha! :)). Kidding aside, I agree to what Anon 944PM said.
Eh bakit very one sided yung opinion? Kapuso pa naman ako, pero na disappoint ako sa mga sinabi nina Arnold and Rhea, moreso with GMA, for not acknowledging the fact that the opinion of their supposedly respected newscasters, got a little bit out of hand.

  36. Curious lang ako, gloating aside, now that the Azkals just won third place in the AFC, i wonder what Arnold and the rest of the haters have to say for themselves now that they're finally bringing a medal to the country. Oo bronze lang for them, but I believe this is the country's only win in the AFC since 1934, I'd like to think this is still something we should be proud of. Baka pwedeng we set aside even for a moment our prejudices (I personally do not agree to the alleged behavior some of the players showed), and celebrate with them.

sige na, given na yun na may opinion si clavio. it's normal kasi tao siya. pero sana inisip niya na siya ay isang media personality. he should be careful and mindful of what he say lalo na madami ang maaaring makapanood sa kanya. sa ginawa niyang yun, nagkalamat na ang kanyang kredebilidad.

  40. Having read all the entries here, I find it enlightening to see people discuss their differences in opinion in calm and smart way.
