Repost: Environmentalist and Philanthropist Gina Lopez Dies

Filipino philanthropist and environmentalist Gina Lopez died on Monday due to multiple organ failure. She was 65.

Lopez was the long-time chairperson of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) and was a former Environment Secretary.

"Gina was the pillar of strength that pushed AFI to achieve what seemed to be impossible. Her caring heart and selfless kind of love inspired people within and beyond the organization to help and serve others," ABS-CBN said in a statement.

"While we mourn with Gina’s family and loved ones, we also pray that her legacy continues to live on in the heart of every Kapamilya she had touched in her lifetime.

"We will never forget her and will continue to honor her remarkable contributions not only to ABS-CBN, but the entire nation.

"Thank you Gina, for showing us how it is to live in the service of the Filipino," ABS-CBN said.

The company's chairman, Mark Lopez, also mourned the loss of the staunch environmentalist and children's rights advocate.

"Today, we lost not just a family member but a person we deeply admire and respect," the ABS-CBN Corp Chairman said in a statement.

Mark Lopez is a cousin of the former Environment Secretary.

"At an age when people are just figuring out what they want to do in life, she already knew her purpose. She left a comfortable life to devote her time and energy to help uplift other people’s lives," Mr. Lopez said.

"When she returned to join ABS-CBN, she instilled in her people the same drive to help. For her, nothing cannot be done, no effort is too small, anybody can — and should — do their part in making the world a better place.

Mr. Lopez lauded his cousin for her efforts to rescue victims of child abuse, save a watershed, stop the destruction of the environment, clean a river, and help communities stand on their own by turning them into eco-tourism sites.

Gina Lopez became known for her work in rehabilitating the Pasig River and La Mesa Watershed and shutting down mining operations found to have violated environmental laws.

"All of these she did out of love, and with love, as she believed love to be the strongest force for change.

"We will miss Gina’s light, as a private person, as a leader, and as a crusader. While she left us a void that cannot be filled, we take comfort in knowing that with love, like she had shown us, there remains hope and beauty in the world we live in.

ABS-CBN Foundation Inc also remembered the zeal of the institution's founder.

"Gina Lopez was a champion for the environment, child protection, and the disadvantaged. She exemplified a life of service to humanity with a deep desire to improve people’s lives, rallied for social justice, and sought to bring hope and change to poor communities," AFI said in a statement.

As an advocate for children's rights, she founded the Bantay Bata 163, a helpline devoted to reports of cases of child abuse.

She also established Investments in Loving Organizations for Village Economies (iLOVE) Foundation, which aims to lift communities out of poverty through the creation of environmentally conscious businesses at the grassroots level.

Lopez was the sister of ABS-CBN chairman emeritus Gabby Lopez and daughter of "Kapitan" Eugenio Lopez, Jr.

In lieu of flowers and mass cards, the family requests that donations be made to the ABS-CBN Foundation. There will be a public viewing at the La Mesa Eco Park on Aug. 22 to 23.

Repost: Family Accepts Fate of Mely Tagasa (Miss Tapia)

Screen veteran Mely Tagasa, best known for her role as the strict teacher Miss Tapia in "Iskul Bukol," has been "weaned off her respirator" after a week in coma, a family member said.

Tagasa's daughter, Gina, gave permission to ABS-CBN News to cite her personal Facebook post, which gives an update on the 82-year-old actress, currently confined at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan.

"It was a tough and painful decision to make since she has been quite dependent on this machine," Gina wrote Thursday, a week after Tagasa suffered a stroke.

"She is still in comatose stage but displays some pain and discomfort as she slightly jerks and squirms because of the intubation. (Ok, doctors say it's just her 'reflexes'). She now breathes with the help of an oxygen tank. We continue to monitor her condition--her vital signs fluctuate every hour so I can't say everything is OK."

Gina, one of Tagasa's four children, added they now "leave everything to the Lord," noting her mother's birthday 83rd birthday is on April 16.

She wrote: "If He wills her to continue enjoying a quality life at 83, then a miracle is bound to happen. If He decides to take Mommy home with Him, Eternal Life in Heaven awaits. We accept. Our Faith will see us through."

Tagasa's family went on to thank those who have given "love, moral support, and loving thoughts," and asked for continued prayers "for me and my three younger siblings for courage and emotional and physical strength as we fight this painful battle."

"God's plan never fails," she said.

With a 15-year run on television that spawned four films, the sitcom "Iskul Bukol" made Miss Tapia a household name, alongside the main stars of that series -- the trio of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon.

Tagasa's decades-long career in showbiz also saw her as a radio and television writer, and later on as a producer.

Letter from a Reader: Ooops! ... He Did It Again!

Dear Fashion PULIS,

Hi FP. I am an avid reader of your blog. I just want to share a story. We had the voices songs and rhythms during a festival 2012 held here in our province. I was part of the logistics team of the said event.

Our governor requested this perfomer PE to be one of the hosts of the event together with a beauty queen BQ. The call time was at 7pm, latest was 8pm. The event was star-studded with music industry veterans as judges, politicians and other stars. It was already 9pm but PE had not arrived yet because "traffic daw." The organizers had no choice but to start the program even without him.

We were very disappointed. PE didn't show any professionalism at all. The event was not his own show where he can afford to be late and be excused. Ours is a special gathering of people celebrating our festival. PE had no respect for people who trusted him enough to be part of this special occasion, most especially to our hardworking governor and the provincial staff who took great pains to make the event a big success. And also to our guests and performers, most of whom came all the way from Manila, too, and like PE had encountered traffic as well, but arrived way ahead of him. These were the people na pinaghintay nya.

BQ also had a hard time hosting because the script was written for both her and PE. People said that PE was complacent since he was close to our governor daw. But that is no excuse to abuse such closeness, if true. PE arrived around 9:30-10 pm already. Thanks, but really...no thanks!

Hope that next time he gets invited again, PE will be more professional and respectful of people.

Thank you, Fashion PULIS, for publishing my letter. More power to you!

Respectfully yours,
Gina
