Repost: Younger Son of Loren Legarda Writes Why He's Proud of His Mother

Why I am so proud of my mom

By: Leandro Legarda Leviste

I am writing this because my mom deserves all the recognition in the world for being an exemplary public servant and a role model for the youth.

My mom grew up in a middle-class family in Malabon and went on to become an award-winning journalist before she turned 30. She was elected senator with the highest number of votes at 38 and became the first female Majority Leader at 41. She has produced a body of legislation over the past 24 years larger than I can do justice to here. It can be overwhelming to think of how she achieved so much by such a young age, but it should serve as an example for what young people can do, in hopes that our country can have more people as committed as her to raising the bar for excellence in public service.

Excellence for my mom is measured not in terms of headline-grabbing privilege speeches, but in the quality of bills that become laws, that reporters admit cause them to move to cover more exciting topics. There was no political logic for my mom to author the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, the Philippine Tropical Fabrics Law of 2004, or even the Climate Change Act of 2008, which others questioned the need for at the time. But that’s who she is – she champions causes, recognized or not, due to her deeply-rooted sense of responsibility to do what is right.

I think one reason why my mom has been able to get so much done is that she knows how to work with others. A consensus builder among political parties, she has even been a hostage negotiator with the Abu Sayyaf. While politics can be contentious, I have seen from my mom the importance of having civil discussions, empathy and respect for people even with whom one disagrees to pass crucial legislation.

Even more incredible is that she has done all this while being a single mom, who has always put family before politics. When I was 16 years old, I felt a pain in my chest. My mom was preparing to launch her 2010 vice presidential campaign, yet she canceled all her schedules and insisted on bringing me to the hospital, where we learned that I had punctured my lung. She stayed overnight on a bench in the ICU throughout my confinement. Her combination of caring and attention to detail saved my life.

Despite my mom’s busy schedule, she still even micromanages caring for my 89-year-old grandfather and our 88-year-old Nanay Fely, who took care of us all from birth, and whom my mom treats like her own mother. It’s amazing how my mom can care for so many people so efficiently amid all her work. These are just among the countless examples of how she puts others before herself. I consider it as the greatest privilege to have had so much of my mom’s time growing up, and see it as the least I can do as a son to burden her as little as possible so she can devote as much time as she can to help others.

The older I get, and the more I see of the realities of life, the more I have come to appreciate all that my mom has done and continues to do for her family and her country. I have never been more proud of my mom than I am now. Advanced Happy Mother’s Day, mom!

New Happiness

When celebrities declare their relationship, fans either support or bash the couple. Luckily, Network Actress (NA) and Passionate Actor (PA) were in the first category. Although NA and PA were not considered a love team, the public was receptive to their relationship. Many onlookers felt the two were meant for each other.

As months passed, the respective social media accounts of NA and PA showed their sweetness. The two were in love. Fans and family were supportive. Their management teams had no objection. The relationship looked promising and their followers hoped the two would lead to a forever status.
Time is tricky. NA and PA stunned supporters when their posts no longer featured each other. Soon, PA hinted things were over and later, the two separately admitted they were done.

Still, fans hoped for a reconciliation. The post breakup scenario was filled with comforting and assuring words for each other. No one bickered. They were seen together, as well.

However, NA and PA going back together might be impossible at this point. While PA has been seen with other girls, he has not confirmed if his heart has found someone new. Similarly, NA has been recently spotted with a Non-showbiz Guy (NG). NA and NG were sweet towards each other according to onlookers. Their behavior prompted questions on whether NA has moved on and NG is the one making her heart beat faster.

An open letter of grief from Loren Legarda’s son

By: Lorenzo Legarda Leviste

'My mother is an example of how fascism takes hold, is made acceptable, normalized, facilitated, ushered in'

I’m writing this weeks after learning the news that my mother, a woman named Loren Legarda, is running for senator on a slate led by a Marcos and a Duterte. She is endorsing fascists. For weeks I have been crying every day, screaming every day until I spat out blood. The decision she’s made is so profoundly unthinkable, unconscionable, unforgivable. In the last month, my entire life has collapsed. It is beyond a nightmare. I still cannot believe it and will never be able to accept it.

For weeks I have been paralyzed in pain. But I have no choice but to publicly declare that I am absolutely disgusted by my mother and what she has decided to do. It sickens me and makes me want to die. I need everyone to know that Loren Legarda lost her son forever because of this. Paint her bright red with that shame. Don’t let her forget it. In the words of a wise woman: I don’t know her.

It took Ariana Grande posting a video of a Leni rally with the crowd singing “Break Free” for me to remember that an election was happening. I have not lived in the Philippines since I was 18; I haven’t been in half a decade, haven’t seen my mother in as long, and did not know who was running. I have witnessed the last six years unfold in absolute horror. This detachment is an immense privilege, and conditioned by the immense trauma of having grown up in a country that I always recognized was sick, infected with the historical amnesia and denial that have led to this moment.

I refuse the normalization of fascistic state thuggery, of lies as alternate truth, of the country’s sorry history being rewritten as fable. My mother is an example of how fascism takes hold, is made acceptable, normalized, facilitated, ushered in. I need you to know that she has no clue about the utter gravity and depravity of what she is doing. “So I am on their ticket. Does that make me a fascist?” she asked, both cluelessly and cynically. I was aghast. This is a woman who lived through Martial Law; she was once a journalist who taught me to value truth and justice. This is how vile, braindead, and reckless these people are. They literally have no idea what they are doing, the decades of violence and anguish they are unleashing. For her it is just any other election year, ripe for the usual craven, convenient opportunism. There is no understanding that another Marcos presidency would mean the end of everything for the Philippines. The end of history, ang hangganan ng kasaysayan.

NOTE IN RED. A statement written by artist and activist David Medalla, circa 1970s. Photo by the author

I was born in 1990, in the shadow of decades of Marcos terror, oppression, and corruption. I truly cannot believe the success with which these crimes have been whitewashed. I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me.

The litany of Marcos crimes is not something to be debated. Their atrocities are fact. To even have to state that is patently absurd. To push back against these truths is to declare yourself an enemy of justice; of the thousands whose lives and families have been destroyed by the Marcoses and the Dutertes; of the millions today fighting on the front lines to stop them. My mother, Loren Legarda, spits in the faces of all these people.

The young Indian poet-activist Aamir Aziz, himself engulfed by fascist terror, wrote that, “Everything will be remembered.” I choose to remember merely not the crimes of those in power, but also those among us that handed them power. Recognize all those in your life who are voting for this, and remember their names. Remember that they have declared their subscription to lies and a version of history rooted in brazen, wicked mendacity. They know exactly what they are voting for – mass murder, mass theft, the end of democracy, the denial of truth, the rewriting of history – and they want it desperately. When blood runs in the streets, never let them forget that they have blood on their hands, glowing fervid and bright red. Remind them every day. These are their crimes now. Make them answer for these crimes, make them own them. Make them defend them.

I am in utter grief. F*** my mother for abetting this. Their crimes are her crimes now. Make her defend them. – Rappler.com

'Bla Bli Blu' is Your New 'I Love You'

Warner Music Asia’s latest signee – Valentina Ploy, dropped her first single of the year “Bla Bli Blu” with a bold splash of pink on all digital streaming platforms at midnight.

Synonymous to “I love you”, “Bla Bli Blu” is a love language created by the Thai-Italian artist to express her love through this catchy feel-good track that she co-wrote with Richard Craker and Jackson Dimiglio. A glimpse into Valentina’s multilingualism, the pre-hook is a cheeky preview to her proficiency in Italian, French, and Spanish, as she professes her love in these languages before diving into a grand confession through her very own love language – “Bla Bli Blu”.

In explaining the inspiration behind the bathroom-written track that she speaks very fondly of; Valentina conveyed her difficulties in expressing her love in those three words as it can sometimes feel limiting. Putting her own spin into this expression, “Bla Bli Blu” carries an infectious charm and endearment that is hard to resist.

“Bla Bli Blu” will be accompanied by an adorable music video starring Valentina herself, and German-Thai actor Nino Wongchaiseree. As you’ll be tickled pink, the pair’s chemistry will make you relieve all the exhilaration a romance can offer, and have you fall in love with the compatible on-screen couple. Available this evening at 7pm (SGT), the official music video of “Bla Bli Blu” will be made live on Valentina Ploy’s YouTube channel.

Keep your eyes on the next “It Girl” on the block as “Bla Bli Blu” marks the first of many releases Valentina Ploy has in the pipeline with Warner Music Asia for the year.

Valentina shared, “I am so happy to be working with Warner Music. Very excited and grateful to become part of the family as I feel that they support my vision of developing my artist career beyond limits. It’s always been a dream of mine to bring my music to the world and Warner Music is perfectly suited to help me reach the widest audience possible. With Warner Music and What the Duck, I’ll have an amazing set of partners that will help me achieve my vision and goal.”

Warner Music Asia announced on 21 April 2022 that it has formed a strategic alliance with Thailand’s premier independent record company What the Duck by signing Valentina Ploy, one of its most accomplished singer-songwriters.

This deal will see Warner Music Asia add the established Bangkok-based star to its roster of prominent singers, and will serve to support the What the Duck label in its work to elevate Valentina’s career to new heights. Warner Music will be harnessing the support of Warner Music Thailand to strengthen her domestic fan base, and utilizing the Group’s regional network to introduce her work to music lovers throughout Asia and beyond.

Her Sideline

In the hush-hush dealings of VIPS and attractive ladies, a story is circulating about Smart Celebrity (SC)’s sideline. In a private circle, VIPS are given first choice on attractive women they want to be with. SC, who is popular and pretty, is allegedly on that list.

An Older VIP (OV) availed of the services. SC was set up to meet with her client. SC is charming and articulate and could have easily warmed up to OV. The transaction was done and both moved on. However, talk cannot be controlled and rumors began circulating about SC’s availability. As the rumor spread within the inner circle, concerned friends informed SC’s Love Interest (LI). LI and SC have been dating for a time. The friends warned LI of SC’s secret dealings.

Nonetheless, the rumors started to be pieced together. Soon, OV’s name emerged. Connections were established and it turned out that OV is a friend of a relation of LI. The revelation was shocking.
Incidentally, making the said list is not easy but when a name is added to the list, clients or transactions are assured. These dealings are discreet. Someone makes the arrangement, but the ‘service provider’ is not informed of the name of the VIP. The initial meeting is the only time they meet in person.

‘While privacy strengthens all our bonds, secrecy weakens and damages connection. Lerner points out that we do not usually ‘know the emotional costs of keeping a secret’ until the truth is disclosed. Usually, secrecy involves lying. And lying is always the setting for potential betrayal and violation of trust.’ − Bell Hooks

The Final Pitch Launches ASEAN Edition, Seeks Investor-Judges

The ASEAN’s version of Shark Tank envisions to help high-growth companies scale-up and foster cross-border investment and collaboration across the region

Southeast Asia’s first business reality TV show designed to back and scale the region’s next unicorns, "The Final Pitch ASEAN (TFPA)," is searching for tycoons and business leaders to represent select Southeast Asian countries as investor-judges in the show. After seven successful season runs in the Philippines, TFPA expands to the rest of the region and will feature high-growth startups and strategic investors from Southeast Asia.

TFPA is looking for investor-judges who can make investments in scale-up  startups who want to expand to their home countries. The business show is now on the lookout for representatives from Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam to be the face of their country in the regionally aired show.

With regard to the criteria, John Aguilar, the creator and host of the show specified, "They have to be in a position to be able to invest in high-growth companies but at the same time will serve as strategic partners for the expansion of any scale-up that wants to enter their respective countries. They have to be successful diversified family conglomerates or seasoned investors looking at investing in mostly series A and up startups.”

Aguilar also mentioned the benefits of the investor-judges who will be selected for TFPA. Apart from gaining access to a pipeline of the best startups across the region, they will also have the opportunity to showcase their countries and respective businesses through the show.

"The show will serve as a platform for the investor-judges to be business ambassadors, and we will be bringing the startups who they are looking to invest in to their respective countries so the startups and the viewers see for themselves what they do, and what their mission is. The show will allow the startups and the investor-judges to reach out to a global audience, and will encourage cross-border investments and collaboration with their ASEAN neighbors," he said.

The show will initially be selecting investor-judge candidates from each country within the next two months through a regional roadshow. To be considered as a TFPA  investor-judge, interested parties may email admin@dragonsnest.co or contact the show at +639176569215.

Aguilar stated that the ASEAN version will follow the same format as the highly successful Philippine edition, the show’s proof of concept that has helped more than 100 startups and successfully funded millions of dollars into the Philippine startup ecosystem.

"The world is looking at Southeast Asia as an emerging tech region. There are so many challenges here but there are also many opportunities. And there are a growing number of future unicorns that are being born as we speak. We are looking at expediting their exponential growth across Southeast Asia with TFPA," Aguilar said.

The principal filming of the show is scheduled to commence by the fourth quarter of 2022. Apart from the investor judges and scale-up companies, The Final Pitch ASEAN is also looking for brand and broadcast partners in the aforementioned countries.

Aguilar also shared that their plan for The Final Pitch ASEAN is to introduce the show's format in the region as a stepping stone to their long-term goal to license the show across these different countries.

ABOUT THE FINAL PITCH

The Final Pitch is a reality TV show where viewers see the coming together of the best and brightest startup entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders searching for backing and supporting their enterprises. The idea was spawned to create a platform to serve as a guide and inspiration to those who will trek the long and winding road of entrepreneurship and for investors to find and invest in the ones they are willing to back.

It first premiered in 2017 and is produced by independent television production company Streetpark Productions Inc., on CNN Philippines.
