Repost: Younger Son of Loren Legarda Writes Why He's Proud of His Mother

Why I am so proud of my mom

By: Leandro Legarda Leviste

I am writing this because my mom deserves all the recognition in the world for being an exemplary public servant and a role model for the youth.

My mom grew up in a middle-class family in Malabon and went on to become an award-winning journalist before she turned 30. She was elected senator with the highest number of votes at 38 and became the first female Majority Leader at 41. She has produced a body of legislation over the past 24 years larger than I can do justice to here. It can be overwhelming to think of how she achieved so much by such a young age, but it should serve as an example for what young people can do, in hopes that our country can have more people as committed as her to raising the bar for excellence in public service.

Excellence for my mom is measured not in terms of headline-grabbing privilege speeches, but in the quality of bills that become laws, that reporters admit cause them to move to cover more exciting topics. There was no political logic for my mom to author the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, the Philippine Tropical Fabrics Law of 2004, or even the Climate Change Act of 2008, which others questioned the need for at the time. But that’s who she is – she champions causes, recognized or not, due to her deeply-rooted sense of responsibility to do what is right.

I think one reason why my mom has been able to get so much done is that she knows how to work with others. A consensus builder among political parties, she has even been a hostage negotiator with the Abu Sayyaf. While politics can be contentious, I have seen from my mom the importance of having civil discussions, empathy and respect for people even with whom one disagrees to pass crucial legislation.

Even more incredible is that she has done all this while being a single mom, who has always put family before politics. When I was 16 years old, I felt a pain in my chest. My mom was preparing to launch her 2010 vice presidential campaign, yet she canceled all her schedules and insisted on bringing me to the hospital, where we learned that I had punctured my lung. She stayed overnight on a bench in the ICU throughout my confinement. Her combination of caring and attention to detail saved my life.

Despite my mom’s busy schedule, she still even micromanages caring for my 89-year-old grandfather and our 88-year-old Nanay Fely, who took care of us all from birth, and whom my mom treats like her own mother. It’s amazing how my mom can care for so many people so efficiently amid all her work. These are just among the countless examples of how she puts others before herself. I consider it as the greatest privilege to have had so much of my mom’s time growing up, and see it as the least I can do as a son to burden her as little as possible so she can devote as much time as she can to help others.

The older I get, and the more I see of the realities of life, the more I have come to appreciate all that my mom has done and continues to do for her family and her country. I have never been more proud of my mom than I am now. Advanced Happy Mother’s Day, mom!

Ito yung pang-happy mother's day version.

Trapong trapo. Kinain na siya ng sistema nang tuluyan.

You dont demand respect. You earn it. and no amount of political success can compensate for Loren's failure at home.

  31. Regardless of their political ally, what the eldest did is to humiliate his mom.

Leandro did what he can do to save his mom's reputation and what he feel as a kid.

Put yourself under their shoes. Imagine your panganay that is estranged from his mom and brother suddenly attacks his mom publicly.

P.S. I'm against BBM-Sara tandem but these are my 2 cents

  36. It is sad how politics divide us and even destroy the most fundamental unit which is our family. I think there’s more to this than political issues alone. Bakit sya nasa abroad? Bakit away from family. And to be quite honest, Loren has been jumping from one party after another every election. Wala namang bago doon. This eldest son’s lifestyle is a product of his mom’s political career. So for me hindi sya pwedeng magmalinis kasi he benefited from it din.

You and your mom may have different beliefs and all aspects of life but I can never bear humiliate, shame and curse her! Respeto na lang!

  37. Pag maganda ginawang comment.. Favorite agad? Anong klaseng mindset yun?

As a son, right nya yan.

  39. For me, it feels like emotional blackmail. While the eldest son's language in the article was a bit too much and a little less smart, I saw through his pain. And it's an example of how a mother can literally pit her two sons together. So ano to, mother vs my kuya ang peg? I wouldnt want Loren as my mother. Kung sumunod ka, ikaw ang favorite but when you against her, rebelde. Extreme ang ganitong Nanay. Her younger son's words do not move me but rather confirm the kind of mother she is. Kapit lang, Lorenzo.

but we have to admit that there are parents who treated their children badly. and I am talking in general na ha not because of loren and the eldest and the bunso, since we don't know the whole story with them, I am talking kasi may mga nababasa ako na kahit anong mangyari magulang pa rin yan but di yon na apply sa mga anak na biktima ng abuso, verbal or physical.

  42. Sa true lang tayo ah. Marami naman talagang nagawa si Loren. Ang hindi ko lang magets is bakit nya kailangan sumama sa kadiliman in order to win this election when she couldve run as an independent candidate. Her stellar achievements can speak for herself. Bawasan nya sana pagiging trapo & political butterfly. Yan kase nagpapasama ng image nya. Now about her kids, whatever they are going through, I hope they can resolve this privately and wag na muna magkukuda ang mga anak nya in public. Election lang yan mga cysts. Family is everything.

  51. Loren is clearly a bad mother. Looking at this new article from the favorite, walang emotion. Parang nagsusulat lang about a senator, parang writeup sa newspaper, but not about his mother.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think Lorenzo “disowning” Loren has nothing to do with her affiliation with BBM, simply because his father Tony Leviste is a Marcos supporter as well. Lorenzo mentioned he left Phils when he was 18 ( he’s 32 now) and haven’t spoken with his mom for years, that alone proves they have long standing rift

  53. Hmm. The critical son's writing was very emotional and imperfect - crude, yes, but raw and heartfelt. This one is extremely well written, practically flawless. I wouldn't be surprised if it was edited, proofed or what have you. Not saying that there's no sincerity, but that clearly, it was written purposefully.

    2. @9:44 AM, It's not just a matter of having "different choices and different political views". It's about a mother abandoning all that she had taught her son. Remember, Lorenzo wrote that Loren, his mother, taught him to "value truth and justice." Now this! Loren aligned herself with the very people she taught Lorenzo not to become one. Of course, the son, Lorenzo, became so conflicted,.pained and betrayed. At what age did Loren give birth to Lorenzo? 30? 25? Loren has at least 25 years more compared to Lorenzo in terms of wisdom, discernment and good judgment (supposedly!). Then, the one who's decades younger would be the one to understand the elder's apparent shady associations? No! Us mothers are beholden till our last breath to model truth and justice for our children. The same way our children are obligated unto their children. Parents are the MORAL COMPASS of their children. Let that sink in!

    1. No. Hindi naman sinabing hindi mo sya pwede icorrect. If her child feels na mali ang decision ng nanay nya, why not talk about it in private? Bakit kailangan ipangalandakan yung pagiging disrespectful nya? And i dont know about you pero ako as a daughter, may mga bagay din na ginagawa ng parents ko na di ko gusto but I tell them about it and still respect them for being my parents. Di dahil I look up to what they're doing lalo kung mali.

An ousted former president, so corrupt and a dictator with a wife full of extravagance while the country was suffering with extreme poverty at that time. The fruit does not fall far from the tree and BBM may continue that horrific legacy that his father left behind. Good luck to all of you my kababayan. Please vote wisely!!

  61. I have voted for Loren and will still do. I don't care what political color she's in. It is because of her experience and work. She has proven her worth especially as a champion of the environment. I used to be part of our HS campus paper and remember joining a journalism contest where the topic is about the environment. During that time, I have researched about her and the bills she had passed and wrote an editorial piece about it. That's how I knew her work was legit. Point is, minsan nakakalimot tayo na yung mga anak naten is also an individual with a mind and a personality of its own. Laging nasisisi ang magulang, pero as parents, yung mga ganitong bagay ang napakahirap makontrol because you can never change them. Walang perfect na magulang, pero it is also not fair to say that it is always the parent's fault.
