Here’s a treat for those who love oysters.

MARINA Oysters Seafood Grill is offering its best-selling oysters at just P25 per order on Oct. 25 in celebration of its 25th anniversary. And as a bonus, it is also slashing prices on all orders of blue marlin by 50 percent every Mondays until November 26th. It’s a special promo that seafood lovers will surely enjoy.

MARINA Oysters Seafood Grill is one of the few homegrown Ilonggo brands to make it big in Metro Manila. Since it opened its first branch at the Ortigas Center in 2002, it has become the destination for oysters, seafood and Ilonggo favorites.

The Marina brand was started in 1987 by Ross H. Gorriceta and his wife Marina Luz to serve Ilonggo cooking as they have it at home. Within months, it became a must-stop destination not just for Ilonggos but also for out-of-towers who wanted to sample local delicacies.

While the restaurant eventually opened a handful of branches in the Visayas, it took its time before opening its first branch in Metro Manila. By that time, RP Gorriceta had taken over the restaurant’s management from his parents.

“Our oysters, seafood and grilled items were such a hit with the Manila market that we were able to recover our initial investment in less that eight months,” RP confesses. “Encouraged, we started opening additional branches at the rate of one branch every six months.”

RP thinks one reason why MARINA became a hit in Metro Manila was because it served oysters in a bucket, which were then a rarity in casual dining restaurants. The unique taste of Ilonggo cooking also proved to be a plus.

“In 2002, oysters were considered a luxury product, available only in hotels and high-end restaurants,” he explains. “What we did was to democratize oysters to the public at large. It took to the concept and our first outlet. After only a month of local flyer-ing and promos, word-of-mouth took over and there was a line for lunch and dinner service everyday, all week long.”

At MARINA, you can have oysters in a variety of ways. It is served Fresh, Steamed, Grilled or Baked. Other preparations include Red Hot Baked, Crispy Wasabi, Sizzling and Kinilaw. No matter how you have it, guests are always assured that all orders of oysters are sourced fresh daily from Iloilo.

RP says, “Our oysters are flown in everyday. Quality and freshness are checked before the oysters leave the source, as they arrive at the commissary, before they are delivered to outlets, and as they arrive at the outlets. As oysters are very sensitive products to handle, you wouldn't believe the rate of damaged products we go through, just to ensure that none reaches our guests' tables.”

To avail of the Php25 Oysters Promo on October 25th, guests must order an item from the a la carte menu. Only two orders of oysters are allowed per table.

On the other hand, MARINA takes pride in its blue marlin as the biggest and thickest cuts in the market. A special preparation ensures that all servings of blue marlin are juicy and perfectly grilled. You can have blue marlin either grilled or sizzling, although RP recommends them grilled.

Ilonggos call malasado or just below fully cooked to lock in the steak’s juices,” he says.

Unexpected Closeness between Actor and Star

After cool actor (CA) and character star (CS) spent some time abroad for the shows of their network, people were surprised that both seemed closer when they returned to Manila. When CA and CS were in their previous relationships, the public thought each was a perfect match for their respective partners. They looked good together with their ex-es and seeing them with their former lovers elicited that “kilig” factor.

However, when their respective breakups happened, the aftermath were quite scandalous. In the case of CA, he never bothered to reply to the flak and the bashing he got from breaking up with his former lover. Although, he might have wanted to speak out, his management could have given him a gag order. CS, meanwhile, had an on and off relationship with her former boyfriend. It came to a point that CA even got his partner’s hush-hush former girlfriend into their mess. Sad to say, it portrayed CS as the jealous and insecure girlfriend. Unlike CA whose post-break up is over and done with, the camp of CS has recently said that they will start talking if a former lover will not stop provoking them.

If you are with a gorgeous person and actually sharing a room and a bed together, and you are both unattached and far away from the public, what do you think will happen? According to sources, that was exactly the situation of CA and CS. Did something happen while they were away to result in their extra closeness now? Uhmm, well, let’s put it this way, CA is really a gentleman, and the closet is quite full at the moment. Hence, no rumours of a love affair between CA and CS can be generated from this closeness. If something similar gets to be built around this, will people still believe?

The sisters, S1 and S2, have always been consistent in their notoriety, whether on or off camera. Apart from those endless diva-like stories about them, there are tidbits going around usually coming from people who have first-hand encounters with them.

Both S1 and S2 go to the same salon frequented by celebrities for their hair needs. Again, anyone who encounters them usually have something to get surprised or shocked about. Both S1 and S2 are not your ordinary salon patrons who will just trust its staff and facilities for their needs. Is it a shock to know that the sisters bring their own water to be used to wash their hair? Water is in 2 quantities of 5 gallons each of W brand. When the staff told them that the salon water is clean enough for all client needs, S1 and S2 would reason out that they can not just entrust their hair with anything, and that as popular stars, they always have to keep up with a certain "image" from hair to toe. Yes, and to the extent that they will bring their own branded, distilled water to wash their hair. The staff of the popular salon was floored. But of course as professional as they are, the shock did not get the better of them.

With all the "throwing their weight around," someone asked if the sisters are at least generous in their tipping. The staff quickly retorted, "Nah!"

At a press conference, young actress (YA1) came in late so the press and her co-actors in the teleserye started teasing her. YA1 is not known to be fussy when being interviewed so she did not really mind the joking. No matter how negative she might be at times, YA1 can be accommodating enough to reporters and has no qualms answering questions unless there are orders that she should not be so.

Then, a senior co-actor, who plays a significant role in the drama, said that she was late because YA1 and her co-star, young actress (YA2), both came from a bar the night before. Everyone present-- the stars and the press -- knew that senior actor said that in jest and did not mean anything malicious at all. But YA1 answered the senior actor to defend herself. Upon hearing YA1, a younger co-actor CO remarked, "Patola?" The press was shocked and couldn't believe what they just heard. "What? CO spoke in Bekimon?" was all they could utter. The audience likewise gave a confused looked as they were not expecting OA to gayspeak.

Well, is this unguarded moment a sign of the heavy influence of the bekis around CO, or is this a revelation of what really is in him?

Gluttony and the Smelly Consequence

At a dinner in a restaurant, some diners were turned off by the smelly incident that happened to one of the actors starring in a series. That night, muscular actor (MA) was eating more than what his fellow diners thought he could. MA is known to be very particular with his body and is noted for being fit. In fact, MA was one of those who made a well-buffed body a trend among the young generation of actors. Anyhow, MA just kept eating and eating. Perhaps the food was really delicious or he was just happy that night that MA kept binging.

Since it seemed that he almost finished their orders, obviously MA over ate. So, with that combination, something immediately did not agree with his stomach. Lo, he went to the restroom and stayed there for at least half an hour. As a celebrity, his entry into the restroom was not unnoticed by the other restaurant goers who saw him and waited for him to step out. Those who had the guts to enter the restroom heard the rumbling and smelled the result of MA’s gluttony. Embarrassed by the disappearance of MA, his friends at his dinner table started to step out of the restaurant one by one. Finally, when MA rejoined his friends, he was all sweaty, and perhaps, relieved.

What’s the learning here? Simple, keep to your diet, and avoid pigging-out on food that can make your stomach grumble. Lucky for MA he was in a restaurant. Imagine the horrors had he been on location. Then, he would have had a similar experience as this other young actor (but that’s another story.)

Odd Request from the Speaker

Anyone who plunges into showbiz, fashion, politics, and entertainment in general gets some sort of a celebrity status and as such should be prepared by the realities that go with it. To be hounded by paparazzi is one, especially in a country that is so photograph-crazy. The fans believe stars should at least try to be accommodating for simple requests such as photo-ops, also known as photo opportunity. In all fairness, most celebrities do try to be nice and cool about it.

However, this celebrity (BC) is an exemption. BC led a quiet and low profile life prior to winning in a national contest. Her unique name and impressive academic credentials helped her clinched the title. But her sudden rise to fame was something she obviously did not expect. When she came home after winning in a major contest abroad, it was expected that BC would get some invitations to grace some events, personal appearances in television shows, some on-the-spot interviews, and the like. But trouble started when BC became a little uncooperative. Some people witnessed that BC did not hesitate to show how tired, uncomfortable and unhappy she was every time she felt like it. In other words, people did not see in her the charm that she should have shown at that point.

BC always reasoned out that she did not want to be in the limelight. Smart as she is, shouldn't she have known better? Joining a major contest and winning it, didn't she know that she would reap the unwanted attention after? Yet, BC obviously abhors it. To make matters worse, her attitude has spilled over to her public appearances. Not too long ago, she was invited to be a guest speaker in an annual tourism event. Everyone in the audience was excited as it’s not often that they get to hear from a "beauty and brains" celebrity like her.

But all the excitement was short-lived, after all. It turned out, even before BC took to the stage to speak,  participants were told that no pictures of her would be taken. The order from the management was to be strictly enforced. Thus security was tightened when BC entered, and the audience unwillingly obliged to the order.

The disappointed participants couldn't help but wonder why BC would give such an order. They felt it was so off since the other speakers, one of them a more popular and influential media practitioner did not and would probably not give such a silly request. So, what's with BC? If she is not willing to make even little sacrifices, shouldn't she have opted to stay home for good so as not to rock her highly prized privacy?

Smart as she is, it seems that propriety is something that BC has to relearn.

Securing His Place in Her Network

An influential network insider (INI) was dragged into a controversy sometime ago, but the flames were immediately put out before it became haywire. The controversy was not the doing of INI, but she was dragged because the parties involved were close to her personally and professionally. Because of INI's  influence, the issue was not played up.

Meanwhile, seasoned actor (SA) has done the rounds of almost all the networks and almost all possible roles in all possible movie and television genre. In short, SA has had a colourful career that is as colourful as his personal life. Earlier, when SA faded out of the limelight, everyone thought it was for good as he seemed bent on retiring from showbiz. But years passed, SA was always lured with good offers for him to return to acting. He repeatedly turned it down, until an offer came that made him decided to return with the family. However, SA got involved in another career controversy that almost made him leave again. But the call of acting and performing was too great, that he decided to stay. The younger generation might not know him anymore, but SA is still so handsome and with a look that seems to defy aging.

What then is the connection between INI and SA? In a network event, SA was seen coming out of the hotel room of INI early morning. SA, regardless of his age is still every colegiala’s dream, and no woman would probably turn him down. INI is not bad looking either. Allegedly, a rumour is going around that SA and INI hooked up for their own personal reasons? SA is with INI so he can be secure in his career with the network, while INI is in there to get back at a very close person who had betrayed her.

She’s Turning Over a New Leaf

At the peak of her career, versatile actress VA savored everything she had - fame, money, endorsements, movies, colorful lovelife, and legions of fans who were willing to defend her at all costs. As age caught up with her, she succumbed to the domestic life and raised her children. Once in a while, she would appear on television which was welcomed by her fans and the curious public. However, the downtrend in local cinema and many changes in her personal life affected her career. Eventually, VA went into hiatus, and the public thought she was going the way of great Hollywood legends like a Garbo.

But that wasn't so, her rare appearances were really the result of the low ratings of her tv and movie projects, bad habits, and domestic problems. VA has been beset with all sorts of rumors, the most recent one tested her character because the issue raised public awareness against her. Still, she was VA, and the industry opened its doors for her.

As for the public, the reaction to her projects is quite ambivalent. While her recent movie broke box office records, her next one was a disappoinment at the tills.

At one point, the networks gambled on her. She had good materials but the public did not bite and the ratings suffered. Soon, rumors that she was being difficult to work with were circulating. And now with a career that is not as bankable and hounded by negative image, VA is said to be doing the rounds of the networks asking for projects to at least help pay her bills. Some networks could not afford the risk and turned down feelers from her camp. Finally, she was down to the last network. VA allegedly said that a lower talent fee would not matter as long as she has work. The network gave in and offered her a project on one condition: if she gets difficult again during tapings, her character will be immediately vanished.

Will this new project pave the way for VA to reclaim her lost glory? Will the public give her a second chance? Very soon, we will know the answers.

Misguided Miss

If she does not watch out, this pretty daughter PD might just add up to the rising statistics of teenage pregnancies in the country. PD has one of controversial parents in the social scene. Though she chooses to be quiet in her own world, it just can't be helped that she is also written about because of her relations. Anyway, since she was born into affluence, she has acquired the flamboyance and expensive tastes of her parents, particularly her mother. Young as she is, PD is already into expensive things, branded stuff and luxurious travels, with or without her parents in tow. Needless to say, she goes to an expensive school as well.

In school, she is treated just like an ordinary student, as is wont in most multi-cultural schools. So ordinary that PD probably thinks no one would mind whatever she does inside the campus. But oh how mistaken she is. Because only recently, she was seen doing a heavy PDA (public display of affection) inside the campus. Apparently, the young miss has a relationship with someone enrolled in the same school. For one so young, that was such a major concern. Even older people get unwelcome stares when seen doing it publicly. How much more for a girl like her, and within school premises at that?

Maybe it's about time that the busy parents get to stop for a while, take a break, and smell the flowers with their daughter. Don't you think so?
