The Snob

When strangers find themselves in an awkward situation, such as riding the elevator or standing next to each other while waiting, certain behavior occurs. Call it instinct or innate, most people would flash a smile at a stranger in such situations. Expectedly, a smile should be reciprocated or the showing of pleasant behavior.

Good-looking Actor (GA) is a familiar face. People might not recognize him at first, but his stance is a giveaway that he is into acting. One-time, Female Citizen (FC) and Her Companion (HC) found themselves with GA in a well-known, high-end establishment waiting for the elevator. FC smiled and said ‘Hi!’ to GA not knowing who he was. FC was being pleasant.

FC knew eye contact was established, but was shocked at GA’s reaction. GA stared at FC and was unmoved. FC detected the cold reception and assumed GA was rude. As soon as GA was away from them, HC told FC that GA was a celebrity and an actor of a network. FC was disappointed upon realizing that GA should have at least smiled and not be a snob given his status. Nonetheless, GA is known to be moody in and out of the set. Unlike his contemporaries, GA is not among the list of friendly celebrities.

‘And snobbery, it goes without saying, is unacceptable in a diverse and democratic world.’ − Russell Smith

    1. Not naman ngitian but just a simple gesture that u acknowledge someone. Its called basic manners. It wont hurt to give your smile in fact it will make someone feel good about themselves and u feel better as well. But yeah, some people tend to feel awkward and creep to smile w strangers...

    2. So, you expect an artista to smile sa stranger? Medyo demanding naman yata. Minsan kakain ka na lang hihingan ka pa ng picture. Kapag hindi pumayag, snob na.

    3. Agree with 12:41. My friends and I smile to complete strangers, even engage in small talks, all the more if they started the interaction. It's just basic courtesy and proper etiquette.

    4. My dear, it’s called being friendly. Not weird at all lalo na kung binati ka na. Snob talaga ang tawag pag nag-hi na nga sa yo tapos dedma ka pa rin or minsan titignan ka pa mula ulo hanggang paa.

    5. It's common where I live to say good morning or smile at complete strangers. A simple nod with a smile shows acknowledgement of one's greetings.

  5. Hindi ba common courtesy sa pinas yung binabati yung nakakasabay sa elevator na "hi, how are you?"

  6. I work in the food industry and am often a part of luxury events. It's unbelievable but the most snobs we've encountered are the lifestyle magazine editors/writers. The supposedly paragons of culture, good manners, and polite society are the ones who never say 'thank you' and 'please'. They won't even look at you or acknowledge your presence. Oh if only I could drop names.

  7. Even strangers right gesture a simple nod should do if you cannot smile.

  8. weird is not acknowledging a person when a person says hi to you. Madami naman ways to acknowledge a person, a simple smile, a simple "Hi" or "Hello", even just raising your hand will do, kahit nga tumango ka lang OK na. Hindi mo naman kailangan makipagchickahan. Ang tawag doon good manners.

  9. some countries abroad, its normal to say hi when you cross the street for example, at lifts, restaurants, etc.. sa pinas lang sya weird.. living abroad for man years nasanay nako to greet people sa streets, tas nadala ko yung habit sa pinas one time, nag greet ako ng stranger girl din.. naweirduhan sya sakin.. so i assumed sa pinas lang talaga.. kse kahit sa ibang bansa, pinoy to pinoy nag babatian.. hello kabayan ganun.. kahit makasalubong mo lang sa streets..

  10. i find some artistas insecure. Pa-importante when in the country, pero pag sa ibang bansa alam nila na kilala ng mga Pinoy kung saan sila nanggaling. Di uubra ang yabang nila esp those who were struggling abroad before stardom hit them.
