Decision to Go

One of the most difficult movies to do is one that requires more than acting skills and that means, doing scenes that require physical actions in front of the camera. The demand these days is for actors to be fit for possible actions scenes in their projects. While a stunt person can be hired to do actions, most directors prefer not to. In addition, certain actors prefer to do their stunts.

The demand to be fit physically for a role is a challenge that many actors have challenged. For example, an actor should be able to run convincingly when a scene calls for it or hang on to a beam and act at the same time. Audiences these days are smart and quick enough to notice if a stunt double was doing the dangerous scene instead of the actor.

As physical demands for scenes are crucial, the production must implement safety measures during shooting. For example, an ambulance should be on stand-by and a medical team is necessary. At the individual level, protection gear is highly needed for demanding physical requirements. A harness is a typical fixture in most scenes. After shooting, the wires of the harness can then be removed during post-production and editing.

When Versatile Performer (VP) was assigned to do a movie with challenging physical scenes, VP did what was required. VP took conditioning classes to ensure that fitness would not be a problem as the production rolls. Like most actors, VP was excited to see how the preparation for the role would play up. One day, as VP was preparing for the day’s activities, she felt a certain awkwardness. Allegedly, while being fit into safety equipment, VP felt that someone took advantage and did more than what was required. After that incident, VP retraced the steps taken for the project and thought that allegedly being manhandled at that point might be repeated many times while filming. Thus, things changed after mulling about the incident. Between that alleged incident and the present, VP is happy that the decision was best and move on to other challenges.

‘The only thing more unthinkable than leaving was staying; the only thing more impossible than staying was leaving. I didn't want to destroy anything or anybody. I just wanted to slip quietly out the back door, without causing any fuss or consequences, and then not stop running until I reached Greenland.’ ― Elizabeth Gilbert
