PH Goes ‘5G’ Smart Fires Up LTE-Advanced
Co-founder and Chief Wireless Advisor of Smart Orlando B. Vea (first from left) during the tests of 5G LTE-A in Smart last year, where speeds reaching 209.66 mbps were recorded.
Two years after it pioneered the deployment of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G technology in the country, wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) announced that 5G wireless technology LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), is now running in the Philippines’ largest and strongest network.
Smart switched on LTE-A at the Smart Jump Center in Mandaluyong City recently, setting the next phase of mobile communication technology beyond 4G LTE standards.
LTE-A, also referred to as ‘5G’ by reports on leading global mobile operators AT&T and T-Mobile, delivers data from between 100 megabits per second (mbps) to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), or ten times faster than 3G services and more than twice as fast as 4G services.
By firing up LTE-A technology on its network, Smart joins only a handful of carriers around the world with an LTE-A network, along with leading mobile operators in South Korea, United States, Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong.
“Even as our 3G and 4G networks continue to be unrivaled, Smart becomes the first operator to leap into the future and put the Philippines at par with the world’s most advanced countries in terms of mobile communications technology,” said Orlando B. Vea, founder and Chief Wireless Advisor of Smart.
With LTE-A, a 10MB file takes less than a second to download, YouTube videos no longer have to buffer, and video calls are almost lag-free. But beyond speed, LTE-A’s main feature is also its capability to allocate more network resources to users when the need arises. Smart started testing LTE-A across the country in August last year, delivering results of more than 100Mbps in Makati City, in Boracay, and in Davao City during the Kadayawan festival.
Internet for all
Ramon Isberto, Public Affairs head for Smart and its parent company the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), said that the recent development is part of the company’s multi-pronged approach in addressing the various needs for internet and data services in the market.
“The PLDT Group’s strategy has always been to create solutions that address the varying needs of all segments of our customers, to bring fixed, wireless and mobile broadband services where they really matter. They may be delivered at different speeds and volumes, using a variety of technologies, and meant to respond to a wide range of needs of the market – but all of it is aimed at bringing the benefits of the internet to every Filipino,” explained Isberto.
This strategy meant deploying a combination of Fiber-to-the-Home, Next Generation Network, Time-Division Duplex LTE, Frequency-Division Duplex LTE and vDSL to bring internet to every Filipino home, and 3G, 4G, and 5G or LTE-A for mobile subscribers, according to Isberto.
“We are able to deliver all these high-bandwidth services and applications on the strength of our transmission backbone network, which is the most extensive and most resilient in the country. Aside from allowing us to commit to speed, our unmatched network resources give us the edge in terms of efficiency and reliability,” added Isberto.
Smart’s nationwide coverage is backed by PLDT’s fiber optic cable connection which has now reached nearly 90,000 kilometers, or more than four times than competition. To further strengthen this domestic fiber optic network (DFON), PLDT also set up third legs in its fiber loops in key areas nationwide, the latest of which is the Bohol DFON project that provided redundant links between the Visayas and Mindanao.

Can't Shed A Tear

Whether she is actively performing or in hiatus, through the years, CA’s career and personal life continue to stir interest from showbiz followers and the general public. Both her triumphs and challenges - controversial or not - never fail to see print the next day.
However, many were disillusioned at the choices CA made in her personal life, as these have quite ruined her reputation. Domestic problems, scandals and lately, substance abuse, are perennial issues attached to her name.
Fortunately, banking on her perceived stellar performances, there were some people who took the risk and gave CA a break. Soon she was visible again. Yet, talks had it that she was not easy to work with – her outbursts and ‘attitude’ often getting in the way towards a smooth work flow on the set.
Fast forward to CA’s present TV Series TS. Insiders remarked that her personal character and professional behavior have gone from bad to worse. Allegedly, she continues to be a pain in the a** to her co-stars and production staff.
Apart from reporting very late during tapings, CA always comes unprepared, as in un-memorized lines coupled with difficulty in acting/ showing the right emotions required by her director. Reportedly, CA could no longer shed a tear during intense dramatic scenes. The director had done every motivation he can so CA can at least deliver, but results often nada.
Heard from the grapevine that the director has a challenge to hurdle which is to dislodge the record of the recently-ended competition with the same format. But insiders quip that CA can hardly focus and internalize. To compensate, she resorts to violent acting, shouting, and yes, Visine – but still, the emotion falls short – and their audience know it.
Insiders remark that with a talent like CA, the director’s challenge is far from achievable. Hmmm, will the real competition come forward?
“ What someone is, begins to be revealed when her talent abates, when she stops showing us what she can do. “ ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Getting to be More Daring
In every aspect of her career, AP dealt with it like a headstrong and confident woman. For years, everyone knew how deprived she was to run her life, until that day came when she was finally set free – or so she thought.
Unknown to all, AP’s so-called freedom proved to be temporary.
Just as she was excitedly packing her stuff to go out-of-town with the Love of her Life LL to attend a big event, including a welcome party for her prepared by LL’s family. From out of the blue, there appeared Her Guardian HG suddenly telling her that she would not be going.
AP got extremely upset as it was a long-planned trip which HG already approved of in the beginning. For her to belatedly change her mind and tell AP that she wouldn’t be going unleashed the wild beast in her (AP). Reportedly, both AP and HG argued for hours, with much crying on AP’s side. She convinced HG like she never did before, that she (HG) just had to trust her – but to no avail.
Realizing the futility of her efforts, AP bowed down to HG – at the cost of her health and professional obligations. Tired of all the autocratic dominance of HG, AP rebelled. She refused to eat and kept to herself. Eventually, she got sick, really sick - which was the real reason (and not the one peddled by a press release) as to why she was not present at a big event held after the conclusion of a talent show.
Will HG ever exercise fairness towards AP? How is it that AP is singled out in her overzealous control, what about the others in the family?
Will we hear HG quietly rebut, ” What is good for the "golden" goose is not good for the gander. “
“ You can’t teach children to behave better by making them feel worse. When children feel better, they behave better.” ~ Pam Leo
