Like other local actors who grew up abroad, Handsome Actor (HA) realized early that success in the local arena means being able to speak and understand Filipino. Having an attractive physique and face as well as interesting background are insufficient to attract fans and sustain a career. HA knew that he had to learn to speak without a foreign accent that he acquired during his growing up years in a country far from the tropics.
HA got his break when a network spotted him, but time proved his roles were limited based on his skin color. As he still had his accent, casting him with the network’s leading ladies proved difficult, as his role had to fit his looks. Thus, his career was in the freezer, which he could not afford, as he was assisting his family living abroad. Lucky for him, he met his Future Manager (FM), who managed to offer him deals that could match his capability. Soon, he moved networks and faced new challenges. While he had established name recall, he could only land supporting roles, whereby his earnings were too meager to support his lifestyle and that of his family.
Without FM’s knowledge, HA started to play the field with moneyed women and gays. As FM has an extensive network, he eventually found out the dealings of HA. FM told him to be patient with his projects, but HA said he was not getting younger and he needs to make sure his family will always have their needs answered. Finally, FM said that if his network finds out about his private dealings, his career will surely be cut. After waiting for a time, HA requested FM to send feelers to his former network. However, FM was told that the station has no more space for HA, as they already have an influx of mixed-race talents with a similar situation as HA’s.
HA had no choice but to stay put in his current network. His projects were still limited and he needed to do something. HA decided to drop his booking ideas and instead, concentrated on finding a rich woman who understand him and can help him with his financial needs. He is indeed fortunate, as he managed to meet such woman, who’s young, understanding, and rich. Thus, even if he seems to be hardly seen in front of the cameras these days, he’s spending quality time with his partner.

Making a Surprise

Favorite Celebrity (FC) gets invited to out of town shows every so often, as his talent is impeccable and he knows how to play the audience. His choice of songs comprises the hits of several generations. Besides, when he sings, he amazes every one with his vocal range. Hence, promoters know they will be getting their money’s worth.
When FC agreed on the terms of his gig, The Promoter (TP) was happy, as FC was sure to please the audience of the town. As travel time would take several hours, TP adhered to the request of FC to hire a big van for transportation. TP initially wondered why FC would want a big vehicle considering he only had two production assistants. Nonetheless, TP gave in to the request to make sure FC arrives safely and happy.
When FC was picked up, TP’s team was shocked at the entourage of FC. Other than his production assistants, TP had a group of young males with him. The entourage was like an all-male basketball team off to their game. The seating was also a source of puzzlement. Usually, the lead person would sit in front or next to the driver. Not in the case of FC. FC opted to sit at the back part of the van, where the cuter boys sat.
Before leaving, FC was asked what type of songs he will be singing, as he seems to have brought backup dancers or singers with him. FC said that the boys were his friends who wanted to see the province where he will be performing.
When FC arrived at the location, he was welcomed and his boys fulfilled their objective of seeing the best places in the area without incurring transportation expenses. So much for taking advantage. TP had to let go of what happened, as he only wanted to make sure FC would perform well for the local people.

Former Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson of Ilocos Sur finally opened up about rumors that the Miss Universe Philippines franchise has been acquired by his LCS Group of Companies.
During interviews on separate radio shows on DzRH and DzMM Thursday, Singson revealed that the Miss Universe Philippines franchise has been offered to his company by the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) based in New York City.
Singson said that the offer was made after the franchise agreement between the MUO and the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) expired recently.
“Pinag-iisipan ko pa. Pinag-aaralan ko pa. (I’m thinking about it. I’m still studying it),” said Singson during radio interviews. “Dahil baka dagdag trabaho iyan. Hindi kagaya yung sponsor, hindi masyadong ma-trabaho. (It might be additional work. Unlike being a sponsor, there is less work).”
If this pushes through, then the Miss Universe Philippines title would have a separate national search outside of the BPCI camp.
So far, the annual Bb. Pilipinas beauty contest sends representatives to international pageants such as Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Supranational, Miss Grand International, Miss Globe, and Miss Intercontinental.
Since the 1960s, the BPCI has been sending delegates to the Miss Universe contest. Aside from newly crowned Miss Universe Catriona Gray, the same group has produced three other Miss Universe winners from the Philippines: Gloria Diaz (1969), Margie Moran (1973) and Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (2015).
In January 2017, Singson funded the staging of the 2016 Miss Universe beauty contest in Manila. But the politician-businessman admitted that he will produce the 2019 Miss Universe beauty pageant in South Korea.
“Mula nung ako ay nag-sponsor, taon-taon tumutulong ako sa kanila. Kaya nung sa Bangkok ginawa, nakatulong din ako. Next year, na-arrange ko na sa South Korea at sasama ang North Korea,” said Singson. (Since I became a sponsor, I have been helping Miss Universe every year. When it was held in Bangkok, I also helped them. Next year, I already arranged it in South Korea and North Korea will join).
Singson did not give any deadline as to when he will decide on the franchise. But sources at the BPCI said that the annual search for the 2019 batch of Binibini queens will begin after the staging of the 47th Miss Intercontinental pageant in Manila on Jan. 26.
Speculations about the franchise made the news when Singson facilitated the arrival of Gray in the Philippines last Dec. 19 via his private plane from Bangkok, Thailand.
On Dec. 20, Chavit’s daughter, architect Richelle Singson-Michael, who was one of judges at 2018 Miss Universe pageant, said that she does not want to talk about the issue on franchise.
But Richelle said that Gray is coming back to Manila sometime in January or February 2019 for her first major press conference and homecoming parade as Miss Universe.
Gray is now in New York City to begin her reign as Miss Universe. She will also attend to a series of press tours which will start on Jan. 7.
