Accept the Choice

Many celebrities often face decisions between career and love life. Usually, talents who enter showbiz with a significant other end up breaking the relationship for the sake of career. By contrast, certain talents have managed to balance their career and love affairs. Those cases require much understanding and support from each party, as management might require the celebrity to have an image as a single person. Being single gives hope to fans that the said celebrity is reachable and available. In other words, fans can go on pining.

When Pretty Actress (PA) made an impact in the industry, she was among the privileged ones to be in a relationship with Male Friend (MF). MF was in love with PA and wanted to her to be his last relationship. Sadly, PA fell into the showbiz dilemma and MF was dropped in a snap. MF tried to be understanding, but he was deeply hurt and depressed.

One day, MF was introduced to a New Girl (NG). NG admitted she was a huge admirer of MF, who was not interested. MF was still hoping to reconcile with PA. At that point, PA already shut the door tightly, as she stood by her decision of having chosen her career over her love. Then, the pandemic happened and careers froze.

As time passed, MF slowly opened his heart to NG, until she won him over. NG’s wealthy background was interesting for MF, whose career was also affected by the virus. Nonetheless, MF felt love for NG and realized he has moved on from PA. Tables turned. PA felt sad that job opportunities were scarce. Thus, she had time to think things over. She wanted to make peace with MF, but her calls were unanswered. She learned the truth that MF had moved on when she saw posts in social media. People in the inner circle could not help but think of how hard karma can hit.

A test of friendship is the reaction of people whenever someone is undergoing stress coming from bashers or any incident that takes an emotional and financial toll. Although some artists have handlers to fix the situation, friends are often the best proof of support.

When the world of Talented Artist (TA) was rocked by intrigue, TA did what he knew best. As a showbiz veteran, TA knows that rumors die a natural death as long as the one targeted kept quiet, which is what he opted to do. Out of the blue, TA received a call from Female Friend (FF). TA appreciated the call of FF, who assured him of her support and conviction.

The two talked about past, would-have-been, and potential projects. Talking to each other was a good time to reconnect as well. FF then said that TA might just be part of a propaganda to earn from. TA said that he is always willing to help financially as long as he is asked. FF agreed with TA. Then, FF joked about TA lending her money. TA laughed hard. TA then said that as long as he could afford it, he will, as he is affected by the lack of work due to the pandemic.

Later, FF called and asked TA about the offer. TA thought FF was just kidding when she brought it up in their last conversation. FF was serious after all. FF then quoted an amount, which could very well be a talent fee for a project of a named celebrity. TA said that his money is tied in his businesses and he can only afford to lend her a fraction of the amount she asked. FF said that TA’s offer is acceptable and she would not mind accepting a cheque. FF promised to pay immediately. On hindsight, TA is aware of FF borrowing from other people. Thus, he fears that FF would not be able to pay him anyway, which explains why he only offered a smaller amount.

Among the talents of a network, Confident Celebrity (CC) gained self-assurance in her career based on opportunities given to her. Compared to other talents, CC was hardly between jobs. Her break between one project and the next was shorter compared to others. The network trusted CC and she delivered.

The trust in CC must have gotten into her head. While other talents waited in futility, CC became choosy with her projects. When CC felt that her role was not going to match her image, she turned it down. Another role was offered to her, but CC did not like her screen partner. Hence, she thumbed down the project as well.

During planning, the creative team often has a talent in mind in preparing a series. Hence, when a talent refuses, the plan has to be revised, which affects the entire work process. When the production teams had enough of CC’s rejection and attitude, they let her be.

Meanwhile, CC thought she could continue her exploration independently. CC ventured into various projects and even tapped others to join her. Unfortunately, most of them did not deliver as expected. Given that a celebrity’s status depends on visibility, CC’s absence threatened her career into obscurity.

Realization came immediately. When CC found out that a production team had a vacancy in the cast, she sprung a surprise. This time, she asked her team to lobby for her to fill that vacancy that was intended for another talent. The production team, upon finding out the move, could only smile. No one can be choosy these days.

The economic effects of the quarantine have made people resort to creative means to augment their finances. An Entertainer (AE), whose career has been drastically affected by cancellation of network shows, corporate endorsements, and other possible income sources, thought of a way to ensure he would not have to dig deep into his pockets.

AE invited Guest One (GO) to his pad. He cooked for GO and served wine. As the cliché goes, if there’s wine, there’s a plan somewhere. As GO is a good friend, he stayed on and listened to AE. AE began with how life has been hard in the past months. GO sympathized with AE and understood what his friend was going through. AE is supporting his family as well. The night was long and they were drunk; something private happened. AE then got his financial help from GO.

Later, Guest Two (GT), Guest Three (GH), Guest Four (GF), and Guest Five (GV) visited AE at different times. GT had undergone the same experience as GO. GH came over for dinner, but skipped spending the night with AE. However, GH extended his pocket for AE even if nothing happened. When GF came over, they weren’t drunk yet when AE lamented his situation. Surprisingly, GF, who had the least work opportunities, managed to give AE what he needed. After all, GF has a rumored rich benefactor, anyway.

Of all AE’s guests, GV was treated best. AE treated GV like a queen. AE cooked and even had food delivered to make sure GV was satisfied. AE knew what GV fantasized and gave it to him. AE is talented in all aspects and GV woke up happily. His happiness translated in the most generous help among AE’s guests. With the size of his collection, AE managed to secure his financial needs even until when the pandemic is projected to be over.

In showbiz, management usually experiments with mixing and matching talents to stir up interest of followers and achieve a bankable combination. The risk is high, but if the pair heats up, the returns are unfathomable. However, fans can have a saturation point and not all loveteams that were once money-earners can last forever.

Knowing that careers depend on a reel loveteam, Network Talent (NT) agreed to a boost by being paired with Obedient Actor (OA). Their tandem proved expectations to the point that the First Partner (FP) of OA was pictured as troubled with the pair, and news that the two were indeed getting personal excited fans.

However, everything was just smoke and mirrors, as NT had Real Love (RL) and being with OA meant a strong cover. When the project of NT and OA was done, NT returned to RL. Their relationship was kept hush-hush for the sake of her career. Meanwhile, her family behaved typically, whereby no one is good enough for their child. Hence, RL was not exactly welcomed. The perception that he relies on his family did not sit well with NT’s camp, who suspected that NT might be spending for RL.

To protect their relationship, NT and RL patiently kept their privacy. Secrets cannot last forever and given the lack of assurance in the time of the pandemic, NT and RL reached out to her family and proved the depth of their relationship. Rather than be the villain and add tension to the relationship, NT’s family showed support. Besides, her family is allegedly worried that NT might not give her contribution to their expenses if they shut her out.

Surprising Reaction

When a talent enters showbiz, the usual reaction is that his/her wish has come true. However, later on, they realize the truth of ‘be careful with what you wish for.’ Many talents think that by becoming entertainers, all they have to do is appear on the stage or in front of the cameras and follow instructions. They fail to realize that joining showbiz requires more than talent. How one deals with fans is a matter of importance, as attitude can make or break a career.

Showbiz Talent (ST) has a successful career given her track record of shows, ratings, endorsements, and other involvements. ST has many fans and followers, as she makes them feel important whenever she’s in front of the camera. Viewers gravitate toward her.

Sadly, ST’s onstage behavior does not translate consistently when cameras are off and the show is over. One time, ST and Male Celebrity (MC) were invited to a company show. Unlike ST, MC has an arrogant reputation and criticized for being aloof. Nonetheless, MC has many fans and popular with the ladies. The two excited the audience, but showed different behaviors.

Throughout the event, MC was accommodating on and off stage. He smiled with fans and posed in selfies with employees. His mingling with fans was different from the perception of being unfriendly. ST was bubbly when it was her turn to be on stage. She entertained the audience and they appreciated her performance. Things turned differently when ST left the stage. Someone said ‘Hi!’, but ST ignored that person. No simple nod or smile came from ST.

When photo sessions with the employees came, ST seemed to be giving a fake smile. As the photos were uploaded, viewers felt the forced smile of ST. They could not understand why ST’s behavior off stage contrasted her amiable and accommodating personality on stage. Many could not help but be disappointed.
