Nearly every Filipino woman has experienced street harassment – from being stared at, to whistling, to cat-calling and to touching– and now the government has finally taken a step as the city council of Manila passed an ordinance penalizing catcalling in the city.
Authored by Manila District 4 Councilor Krystle Bacani, Ordinance No. 7857 or “An Ordinance Penalizing Catcalling and Other Forms of Public Sexual Harassment,” — where all street harassers are sought to be penalized — was passed. “This will penalize all forms of sexual harassment in public spaces such as catcalling, wolf-whistling, leering, groping, and many others the author said.”
In 2016, Quezon City passed the first ordinance to penalize the street-level harassment of women.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros, a well-known advocate of women’s right, lauded the passage of the anti-catcalling ordinance in Manila and shared her excitement.
“The passage of this landmark measure is a big victory for women and safe spaced advocates. It is historic and groundbreaking. An anti-catcalling ordinance in the country’s capital is a big boost to the campaign to protect its women from daily street harassment and a clear policy shift on the part of our local government. This will certainly serve as an inspiration as we push for the passage of a similar policy on the national level,” Hontiveros said.
Street harassment in public spaces has become a normal thing that women only sweep under the rug just so they won’t be accused of “overreacting” and getting blamed of “what they’re wearing and how they behave”.
The anti-catcalling ordinance is a big step to help reclaim the cities’ streets to make them safe spaces for women, and this, hopefully, will not stop in Quezon City and Manila.

Miss Universe Spain crowned a transwoman on Friday, June 29, the first for the beauty pageant.
Angela Ponce, 25, will represent Spain in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant scheduled end of the year. Her win comes as Pride Month comes to a close.

Although she lost in 2015, Angela told the Daily Mail that she already felt like a winner when she competed in Miss World Spain.
"I have the regional crown on my head," Angela said about representing Cadiz at that time.
"And I will keep fighting to make us seen, to make us heard and to demonstrate that I am already a queen with my own crown."
In 2012, the Miss Universe Organization announced that it was allowing transwoman candidates to participate. It is unclear if the rule still applies after Donald Trump, who then owned the pageant, sold it to IMG.
Angela will compete alongside the Philippines' Catriona Gray, who hopes to take home the country's 4th Miss Universe crown. – Rappler.com

Deafening Realization

To have a long-lasting and stable marriage is a goal that seems to elude many celebrities. For most celebrities, marriage is challenging. After finding the person to love, harder work comes in when a celebrity wants to settle down.
In many cases, celebrities prefer someone outside of the industry, as they would rather maintain a sense of privacy. Correspondingly, celebrity couples are hardly spared from the public eye and thus, having relationships with fellow celebrities will result in minimal privacy. However, love is unstoppable and regardless of whether the partner is from the business or not, he/she must understand the demands for a celebrity partner.
When Character Actress (CA) and Her Partner (HP) celebrated a milestone, CA took the opportunity to express her gratitude to HP. CA and HP have kept their marriage intact over the years, and this longevity was considered as an achievement. Thus, in social media, CA and HP seem to have the perfect marriage.
According to the grapevine, CA and HP are not exactly the quiet couple in the neighborhood. Often, the silence of the street would be broken by voices of arguments. CA’s voice would reverberate throughout the neighborhood. As CA is a celebrity, neighbors are already familiar with her house and her voice, too. CA can be passionate and sometimes, the neighbors think she might be bordering on hysterics.
Despite the arguments that fill up their silence of their community, CA and HP still have one of the longest marriages among her peers. Their relationship might not be perfect, but both are trying to keep it running. For such a marriage, that is, between a celebrity and non-celebrity, much understanding has to be invested. Showbiz personalities keep odd hours and may not even spend that much time at home. At least, CA has HP, who could have already understood that having a celebrity wife is not really sleeping on a bed of roses.
