It’s always Liza Soberano vs. Pinoy culture. She really went to Hollywood just to become the biggest critic of Filipino traits. She never misses a chance to talk about the negative sides of our culture in her interviews.
Magkaiba yun.
It wasn't about utang na loob talaga. It was how she left. I followed her interviews and statements. At first I sympathize with her, kasi nakakarelate ng onti about dun sa feeling niya na cage siya.
First, the maya campaign ad. Naging overdramatic yung vlog niya tapos parang naging for marketing lang pala. Sa vlog niya, she kinda implied she didn't like na they decided to give her the screen name "Liza", then proceed to wanting to be called Hope. Yet, di naman nagwork rebranding niya because "Liza" worked for her.
2nd, regarding about Loveteam. She was right about the toxicity of this culture. However, what I don't like was her "telling the truth" were half lies. Sabi niya she felt caged because of LizQuen. But it was her who actually refused her partner to be paired with someone else. Sabi niya HLG was originally meant for them but because she was still working with Bagani and Darna, she told them to wait. Tapos si Liza ang hindi pumayag kasi it scared her because LQ was her comfort zone.
3rd, being involved with that scammer guy. Naalala ko pa sinabi ni guy about her being cast as MJ in Spiderman. Tapos when James split from that person, she unfollowed James while still following Oh.
It was never about utang na loob. It was more about how she keeps trashing a system she also greatly benefited from.
Toxic talaga love team culture for sure. But so is local showbiz's bias toward halfies. So is nepotism. And so is the industry's tendency to favor looks over talent. She was handed projects other actresses deserved more (Trese, Bagani) because of the fame from her being in a love team and being a management favorite — and we don't see her complaining about those. She felt bad na hindi welcome yung creative input niya, but that's just not part of her job as an actress, and honestly, she might have been overstepping at points. She felt bad she wasn't allowed to venture outside a love team, but maybe people around her just didn't see her a strong enough actress to do so. And those people might have been right at the time. (Again, look at Trese.)
I also just find it exhausting how she keeps fanning the flames with side comments (in interviews, in her Maya ads, etc.)as if she wants to keep dragging the issue out, when it already died down. For someone doing relatively well, I jist don't find her very gracious.
mas malala pa nga US culture and hollywood issues kaysa sa pinas. walang pumipilit sa kanya if ayaw nya sa pinas, puro pintas eh nakinabang naman sya sa pinas entertainment. sumikat kasi mestiza halfie kahit mediocre naman sa acting
I think I disagree with her on this. It's a question of fairness for me. I wouldn't trust someone who feels it's ok not to reciprocate a favor received from another. If you feel like you don't want to be indebted to someone, then don't accept their help even if it's offered. It's unfair not to give back if you benefitted from someone's help.
She has mestiza privilege. Something that she did not criticize.
Many love team artists eventually get non-love team movies like drama and horror like Juday, Marvin Agustin, Enchong Dee, Claudine, Gerald Anderson, Kim Chiu etc.
5.05 You are treating basic human relationships like a corporate ledger. Trust shouldn't be built on a system where everyone is keeping score of who owes what. If you assist a friend or family member, do you do it because you care about them, or do you do it to buy leverage over their future? True fairness means treating people with respect, not holding a past favor over their head forever. Furthermore, saying 'don’t accept help if you don't want to be indebted' is incredibly privileged. People in desperate situations (like a medical emergency or extreme poverty) don't have the luxury of interviewing their helper about future expectations. When Liza talks about unlearning utang na loob, she means unlearning the toxic expectation that a past good deed buys you a lifetime of control over someone else's life.
Hi 4:04 its me 1:42 lol sa haba ng lament mo all I can say "she was asked the question" and she just answered that question...alang naman yan ang tanong sa kanya tapos sagot niya irrelevant sa tanong and shes also entitled to her own opinion gets mo lol and again utang na loob is kabaduyan
yes, she never absorbed the filipino culture. may pro and cons yan. pero kung filipino target nya as supporters then shen needs to unlearn din para di mayabang ang dating
Everything she has raised are relevant naman talaga. However, nagcringe padin ako, kasi coming from her. May difference eh. You can correct these toxicities while being proudly Filipino because we also have such a rich culture.... hilaw na hilaw siya for these topics sana ahe can answer more gracefully despite her experiences, it won't help her career for now!
That's her...but most children who love their parents willingly recoprocate out of love and they are happy to be able to do so while their parents are still with them.
But that’s not her case. She was the breadwinner and that poor kid worked instead of her parents. She endured abuse from her mom’s bf. So you can’t blame her but she’s quite right. That utang na loob is being used way beyond of what it truly means, hence, it has become toxic. When you help, you help without expecting anything in return. Period.
The mutual reciprocation of love is not equal to utang na loob which is literally in the phrase na it is a debt that should be paid.
Negatibong enterpretasyon lang ang naiintindihan nya wala naman masama tumanaw ng utang na loob.giving back exist in other culture. Ayaw pa kasi nya sabihin n gusto n nya itakwil ang pagiging Pinoy nya.
5:34 didn’t mention na hindi siya nagtrabaho. Issue here is utang na loob. She’s lucky and bless because may mga tao din nag help and fans.
10:23 you think may respeto pa family ni Liza if wala na syang pakinabang sa kanila? you live in the ideal world. She’s not healed, and her resentment towards her past is clear.
Hindi lang naman sa Pinas nangyayari ito. Unfortunately, it's everywhere. Pero I wouldn't give my all sanity to something I cannot change. You can tantrums all you want, but you cannot just change anything just because you made a statement about it. Grow up.
How many times has she been interviewed and answered this same question? Why does she keep bringing it up? She built her career and received her acting training in the Philippines, yet she continues to speak negatively about Filipino culture. Why doesn’t she talk about the negative traits of American culture with the same energy?
Why don’t you watch the entire video. Here we go, only commenting based on the title, without understanding or researching the entire context. What she said was actually beautiful.
I’ve watched the video. This is already the third or fourth time I’ve heard her bring up the same “utang na loob” narrative. Gasgas na gasgas na. She built her career in the Philippines with the support of Filipinos and now she’s banking on Filipino culture again with this film knowing Filipinos will be a huge part of the audience supporting it. Show a little gratitude.
4.05 Bringing up American culture is just a distraction from the actual issue. American culture is heavily criticized globally every single day by Americans and non-Americans alike for its hyper-individualism, toxic hustle culture, and lack of social safety nets. Liza talking about that wouldn't change anything for Filipinos. She speaks about utang na loob because it is a unique, deeply ingrained pressure that affects the mental health and financial freedom of millions of Filipino breadwinners and youth. Deflecting to another country's problems doesn't make our own cultural flaws disappear. We should focus on fixing our own house instead of pointing at the neighbor's.
There's nothing inherently wrong with utang na loob provided that the intent is good. Unfortunately, it has been made into a tool that gaslights people into servitude
if somebody saved my life, or saved me from a very frightening situation that could cost my life, or my family, I will never forget it and will forever be grateful for that somebody. Di naman siguro masama if itutuloy natin yong ganon, yong being thankful and grateful. Lalo na kung mabuti naman syang tao at hindi ginagamit yong ginawa nya to her/his benefit or advantage. Now if yong taong yon naman ang mangailangan ng tulong and may capacity naman akong tulungan sya, I would gladly do so, as a way of showing my gratitude sa ginawa nya sa akin. Ibang usapan na if ginagamit nya yong ginawa nya para i 'hostage' ka or para isumbat sayo in exchange for something, lalo na kung sumosobra naman na. May hangganan din naman.
Right. Parang she is annoyed to be grateful all the time. Mere recognition and respect are sometimes what's needed. Sa kanya siguro, if nagpasalamat na ako, that's enough, wala na akong atraso sa yo. Parang yun ang gusto nyang rule in life. If may issue sya with being used by her auntie and/or manager, she has promoted being grateful marking it as utang na loob in a generally wrong way. Parang naging hateful and bitter sya about the concept of being helped. She likes to prove that she has worked her way to success and popularity by mere talent and hard work.
Hindi siya dumaan sa traditional artista search na pinaghirapan from the ground up—she had the looks, but the industry gave her the platform, opportunities, and push that made her a star. If she wants to move on, then move on. Pero kung paulit-ulit niyang binabalikan ang past, maybe the issue isn’t the past anymore, it’s how she chooses to carry it. ang nega nya for someone who aims for hollywood career eh mas malala nga systema dun.
Nah. Utang na loob is actually a beautiful trait. Don't you want to give back to people who helped you in the past? Ang sarap kaya sa feeling nun. It only becomes toxic when it is demanded. That being said, it is not a wholly negative trait na you can say it has to be unlearned. But to speak of it negatively is just not right.
6.33 The problem is in the literal phrase itself: 'utang' means debt. By definition, a debt is a transaction that requires a repayment, and it stays active until the lender decides it's paid off. When we say we want to unlearn utang na loob, we aren't saying we should stop giving back or being grateful. We want to unlearn the feeling of transactional indebtedness. If you give back because you genuinely want to out of love, that’s called gratitude or mutual care. We should replace utang na loob with genuine gratitude, because real kindness shouldn't come with an invisible ledger.
Tama naman siya. Kung tutulong ka don't expect something in return. Kasi di yun totoong tulong. Although nasa tao na yan kung tanawin niyang utang na loob for the rest of her/his life.
12:46 THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE REMAIN A POOR COUNTRY BECAUSE WE CHOOSE TO ALWAYS LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE OF THINGS AT HINDI NABIBIGYAN NG IMPROVEMENT IYONG MGA BAGAY NA KAILANGAN ITAMA OR I-IMPROVE.
Pero para sa mga marunong nun at may kusang tumanaw that is a strength more than a weakness. That is character. It will say so much of your morals. Utang na loob is more than gratefulness. It is respect. Hindi yan hinihingi. Kusang binibigay yan. Okay ka naman as an actress. Pero enough na sa mga ganitong bitaw which if misinterpreted, comes of as arrogance. Be humble nalang. It will go a long way. Plus, mas nakakaganda yun inside and out.
Very touching naman at napaka on point ng sinabi mo.
12.49 I understand that in an ideal world, utang na loob is given freely out of respect and character. But we have to look at the cultural reality. Liza isn’t attacking genuine gratitude; she is attacking how utang na loob is weaponized as a tool for lifelong emotional blackmail. When parents or relatives use 'tinaguyod kita' or 'tinulungan kita' to dictate a person's life choices, career, or finances forever, it stops being about 'character' and becomes transactional control. Setting boundaries to protect your mental health and future isn't arrogance or a lack of morals—it’s breaking a cycle of codependency. You can be deeply grateful and humble without allowing your life to be permanently owned by the people who helped you.
Ang batabata pa that time, nagpapakaomnoscient. Ngayon she’s free to do and say whatever.
If you have respectfully shown gratefulness enough, the one you thought you were indebted to would even tell you to forget about it. Nagkaka problema lang if may ingratang kaganapan.
The public will understand her kung talagang inapi sya ng manager and tv station pero wala naman kasing nangyaring ganun. In fact, she is the priority kaya unfair yung mga reklamo nya. If there are some things na hindi nya nagustuhan like let's say na stuck sya sa loveteam, i think it is best na wag nya na sabihin out loud dahil sya mismo, alam naman nya na mas less risk and high return yung strategy na yun kaysa mag solo sya. i think din na may something wrong kay girl..parang hindi sya ganun katalino and narcissist..she cannot read a room.
Madami talagang gimik don same story, concept kailangan mgpakilig. Where is the lie? Ngayon Liza just want to try other things nagaglit kayo. Makasarili lang kayo mga bashers kasi You just always want Liza to fail. Aminin nyo na lang.
puno ng resentment sa buhay idol mo.. eh mas marami naman mas magaling kay Liza pero she’s given priority and marketed well. tapos sukang suka na akala mo without those people in the past, she can make it big.
in the first place sa america nga sya nagka trauma ng childhood pero sa pinas showbiz system/ culture nya lahat sinisi ang mga issues nya sa buhay. Si Liza/family nya ang lumalit para magkaron ng management support, siya din kumapit sa dating LT at ayaw bitawan for clout tapos when goods na sya umalis, panay paninira sa past na akala mo super talented like Lea Salonga level ang contribution sa industry. Delulu pa mga fantards. Inuuto na nga kayo ayaw pa gumising!
She clearly does not underatand the principle of "Utang na loob" because in essence, it is "gratefulness in action". It is not necessarily repaying the good favor done to you. It is also about not causing any wrongdoing to the one who had helped you. Siguro nagsawa sya kasi sinasabihan sya ng walang utang na loob kasi hindi naging maganda separation nya with her former manager.
That's why I don't want to support this Forgotten Island movie because the main cast is not a true Filipina and seems to harbor bitterness with us when in reality, the Philippines only made her rich and famous and stuck in a loveteam but America gave her childhood trauma but she doesn't hate the US.
1:22, Stop lying. She only became famous because she is half-white. Liza should lecture Filipinos instead to stop treating half-whites like her like Gods. It's much more pathetic than utang na loob.
If ph made her rich ibig sabihin nagsikap si Liza para makuha yon.
I feel that the term “utang na loob” has been misconstrued. For me, it is a sense of gratitude and appreciation of all the people who have helped you along the way. It is like a reminder not to lose that sense of being thankful that there were people who have helped you, in one way or another, achieved where you are today. The word “utang” in the term utang na loob should be interpreted as paying it forward, spreading the kindness and help that was handed out to you.
To "Unlearn" something means you are capable of "Learning" :D :D :D Have you seen the corrupt politicians being voted for every single election for the past 20 years? ;) ;) ;) There's your answer right there :) :) :)
Also lahat ng may loveteam serye or movie suportahan at ipa block buster nyo.
Well totoo naman. The kabaduyang "utang na loob" is giving kacheapan

DeleteI’ve watched the video.
Delete4.05 Bringing up American culture is just a distraction from the actual issue.
DeleteThere's nothing inherently wrong with utang na loob provided that the intent is good. Unfortunately, it has been made into a tool that gaslights people into servitude
DeleteIi will have to agree
ReplyDeletewhat is there to unlearn when you haven't learnt it?
ReplyDeleteAgree
Delete@5:09 hahahahhahaha bad kaaa
ReplyDeleteif somebody saved my life, or saved me from a very frightening situation that could cost my life, or my family, I will never forget it and will forever be grateful for that somebody.
ReplyDeleteWhy not about you and not the others? Liza ikaw yan.
ReplyDeleteRight. Parang she is annoyed to be grateful all the time. Mere recognition and respect are sometimes what's needed. Sa kanya siguro, if nagpasalamat na ako, that's enough, wala na akong atraso sa yo. Parang yun ang gusto nyang rule in life.
DeleteIf may issue sya with being used by her auntie and/or manager, she has promoted being grateful marking it as utang na loob in a generally wrong way.
Deletewow naman sa accent paka arte hahahah
ReplyDeletedi naman yan pinay
ReplyDeleteNah.
ReplyDeleteLouder 6:33PM!!!
DeleteYes. If you feel that utang na loob shouldn't be there, it goes to show na hindi ka nga grateful.
Delete6:33 IT'S A BAD TRAIT! YOU SHOULDN'T EXPECT FOR ANYTHING IN RETURN. SABI NGA NI EUGENE DOMINGO, "ONCE YOU'VE HELPED, FORGET ABOUT IT!"
DeleteGirl, you nailed it!
Delete6:33 TUMFACT!!!! This na this
Delete6:25 Please, improve your comprehension skills ateng.
Delete6.33 The problem is in the literal phrase itself: 'utang' means debt.
DeleteWala kasi syang utang na loob kaya how convient for her to say that
ReplyDelete1000%
ReplyDelete7:03 CHRUE.
DeleteTama naman siya. Kung tutulong ka don't expect something in return. Kasi di yun totoong tulong. Although nasa tao na yan kung tanawin niyang utang na loob for the rest of her/his life.
ReplyDeleteShe is rationalizing her lack of it.
Delete7:06 AGREED!
DeleteAm never gonna watch her movies ever. Ingrata!
ReplyDeleteAyan na naman sya.
ReplyDeleteHay nku Liza. Why not just focus on the positive? Who are u to say n dpat bguhin mga ganyan? Eh s gusto kong tumanaw ng utang n loob eh
ReplyDelete12:46 THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE REMAIN A POOR COUNTRY BECAUSE WE CHOOSE TO ALWAYS LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE OF THINGS AT HINDI NABIBIGYAN NG IMPROVEMENT IYONG MGA BAGAY NA KAILANGAN ITAMA OR I-IMPROVE.
Delete12.49 I understand that in an ideal world, utang na loob is given freely out of respect and character.
ReplyDeleteThis! 100%
DeleteI agree with her, you can help but with limits.
ReplyDeleteYung mga salita mo ang ungrateful 🤣🤣🤣 turn off pala itong batang to.
Ang batabata pa that time, nagpapakaomnoscient. Ngayon she’s free to do and say whatever.
ReplyDeleteIf you have respectfully shown gratefulness enough, the one you thought you were indebted to would even tell you to forget about it. Nagkaka problema lang if may ingratang kaganapan.
ReplyDeleteNapaka ganda and smart.
ReplyDeleteshe has no confidence sa rampa, facrcard and english won’t save her
DeleteSympre sasabihin nya yun kasi ginawa nya..hehe dba..
Deleteimbento pa more
DeleteThe public will understand her kung talagang inapi sya ng manager and tv station pero wala naman kasing nangyaring ganun.
ReplyDeletepuno ng resentment sa buhay idol mo.. eh mas marami naman mas magaling kay Liza pero she’s given priority and marketed well. tapos sukang suka na akala mo without those people in the past, she can make it big.
DeleteShe clearly does not underatand the principle of "Utang na loob" because in essence, it is "gratefulness in action". It is not necessarily repaying the good favor done to you. It is also about not causing any wrongdoing to the one who had helped you.
DeleteThat's why I don't want to support this Forgotten Island movie because the main cast is not a true Filipina and seems to harbor bitterness with us when in reality, the Philippines only made her rich and famous and stuck in a loveteam but America gave her childhood trauma but she doesn't hate the US.
ReplyDelete"Because she's not a true Filipina" - Wow you're racist.
Delete12:10 So be it!
Delete12:10 Shes American. Shes not event a fluent Tagalog Speaker
Delete11.14 but when other people are racist to you you'll get mad. What a hypocrite!
DeleteHindi nya hiningi maging rich and famous. Talaga lang kailangan nya mabuhay at magsikap. Kung ano nakuha nya pinaghirapan nya.
Delete1:22, Stop lying.
DeleteShe only became famous because she is half-white. Liza should lecture Filipinos instead to stop treating half-whites like her like Gods. It's much more pathetic than utang na loob.
If ph made her rich ibig sabihin nagsikap si Liza para makuha yon.
DeleteI feel that the term “utang na loob” has been misconstrued.
ReplyDeleteTo "Unlearn" something means you are capable of "Learning" :D :D :D Have you seen the corrupt politicians being voted for every single election for the past 20 years? ;) ;) ;) There's your answer right there :) :) :)
Also lahat ng may loveteam serye or movie suportahan at ipa block buster nyo.
ReplyDeleteWhen did Liza become authority about filipino culture when you only value being filipino when its convenient for you
Lea is the best representation of Filipinos
Hello?
DeleteTanggapin na kasi ng faneys ni Lisa shes past her prime and she’ll just be a micro starlet in Hollywood.
ReplyDelete
