If I may just add, "kuko" in this context also connotes something that is "on the verge of." Thus, "kuko ng kadiliman" translates to "on the verge of nightfall." So, Anon 2:03 is correct his/her interpolation of the contradicting statement of Mr. Padilla. Mabuhay ang wikang Filipino!
Ive always thought that kuko ng kadiliman means literally in the claws of night or the dark. Connotes darkness, danger, nighttime where a lot of bad things usually happen. Even sinister. In that context tama si robin. Madilim na ang gabi at maraming hindi magagandang bagay ang pwedeng mangyari. Mas delikado ang paligid
