    6. 1:43 Sure ka? Nag survey ka ba sa sa ibang bansa to arrive to that conclusion? LOL.

Pero andami nagsasabi na in France, majority prng refuse to speak english or prefer french while in a conversation. It's actually polite to learn a few french greetings or words. So baka nagtaka lang si rhian bat umattitude si old lady. D naman siguro bastang trying hard lang.

    8. Isn't she from Zobel? I think they have foreign language class there. She might have learned French in high school.

    9. Grabe naman the comments on Rhian's post. I didn't know na people see french people that way, half french boyfriend ko so I am familiar with some of their culture.

    10. Basta para sa akin, French people have some of the best music around. They have Lara Fabian, Johnny Halliday, Helene, etc. Awesome, marvelous music. I'll not hold account a nation for one person's mistake.

    2. French maybe are snobs but they are not racists. French dislike Chinese, Koreans and Filipinos for that.

      Delete
    3. Anon 12:44. Japanese don't like loud people too but i never heard them said they dislike a certain race because of that. Iisipin lang nila baka foreigner and then move on. Wapakels.

I asked my Japanese coworker about this and she said, they don't care. Mas bothered pa sila kapag mismong hapon yung maingay. Haha!

      Delete

    7. I'd like to correct you 1.44.

      Delete
    8. Anong sinasabi mo jan 7:52? May foot soldiers na Japanese but that's beside the point ang point niya is that the Japanese people are trying to make up for the mistakes of their ancestors.

      Delete
    9. 12:41 How do you know that? Yes, racism exists pero I dont know how you came up with the conclusion na mababa ang tingin ng ibang lahi sa Asians. Sa mga progressive na countries nga, especially yung multi-cultural, mas open-minded at mas aware pa sila sa concept ng equality at respect than a lot of Pinoys. Di rin tolerated and racism. Your race doesnt define you as a person. Mas valuable ang respect sa kapwa mo,regardless of race. Kung mababa tingin nila sayo, problema nila yun.

      Delete
    10. 5:54 korek ka jan. Alangan akong mag english pag may pinoy kasi alam k pinakikimggan kung korek grammar ko. Pero kung walang pinoy keri lang.

    5. talaga teh pati ung pinapakialamanan nila? hahaha kung ako yan aasarin ko pa lalo haha

      Delete
    6. Oo, mapanghi nga ang Paris. And French do feel superior kasi proud sila sa mga sarili nila esp sa mga na-achieve ng society nila: French Revolution, a more egalitarian society, free education and health for all citizens, solid economy, etc... But wala pa rin silang karapatang mag-look down sa iba.

    6. Anon 12:32, it's all about history. Try mo magbasa para malaman mo ang hatred between France and England, France and Germany, etc. My family and I were in France more than 10 years ago, so far, wala kaming na experience na discrimination. Well, we didn't try speaking their language. They tried speaking in English and in between laughters we understood one another.

      Delete
    7. Feeling superior talaga yang mga french. Ilang beses kami na snob ng mga tindera sa paris just because we dont speak french. Kahit magtanong ng direction ayaw nila sumagot pag nag english. Hindi lahat, pero madami dun ganun.

      Delete
    8. French people come across as snobs if you don't speak French simply because they cannot speak English fluently, accent and all. This fact is all over the internet too.

    1. korek ka dyan anon 12:34 ..if you trying to mimick an accent that is foreign to you is considered an act of racism for many people ...cause they will think that you are making fun the way they talk.

    2. They're not English speakers. Lalo na pag outside of the touristy areas. So pano oorder si Rhian? "Umm Miss yung combo # 2" ganern??

      Delete
Ganun din when you're speaking a foreign tongue. If you dont at least try to approximate their accent and diction, it's a negative. Hindi pagiging feelingero yon.

      Delete
    4. 1:26 As if naman magtagalog si rhian ng ganyan. Stop the sarcasm. English is a universal language. It's a restaurant so im sure they get a lot of non-french speaking people there. Hindi kailangan mag accent si rhian all the way, siguro while reading the menu but not in a normal conversation. Kaya siguro nairita sa kanya yung lola.

      Delete
    5. Sabi nga baks, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Apply natin sa Paris, when in Paris, do as the Parisian do. Ganern!

  12. I've frequented France and they are not racist FYI. What they do hate are tourists who try to speak in French but half bake meaning when the French reply to you in French you start to stutter and revert to English. They'd rather have it you tell them nicely you can't speak French and will converse with them in English.

    ReplyDelete

I still speak english. kasi if you speak local. they'll take it na you you'll understand them.

Tip. if it's just Thank You, Hello and Sorry. You can use local language. But let's say if you want to ask questions. Say it in english na lang. Haha!

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the info. I wonder why Rhian labeled the old woman as "racist"? Was Rhian's race ever brought up or was she insulted for it or for the color of her skin? Kulang details sa sinabi ni Rhian kaya its hard to judge.

Sa France talaga sila very strict sa language nila, kelangan todo effort ka to speak French or they won't appreciate it at all na "butchered" ang language nila. Very proud sila sa ganyan.

    ReplyDelete
Pero honestly, that's how it is in France. It's like, you as a tourist should adapt to them, they will not adapt to you.

  29. Mimicking an accent can be insulting to people who is speaking the certain language. Instead of mimicking the accent, put your effort in pronouncing words properly. Mispronouncing can translate to something rude or have bad meaning.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you pronounce them properly, you are already adopting the accent noh. Accent is not just on the rate of speech, but also on how you pronounce the words.

      Delete
    2. 2:22 - IN THAI, EVEN IF YOU PRONOUNCE THE WORD CORRECTLY IF THE SOUND OR INTONATION IS WRONG, THEY WON'T UNDERSTAND YOU.

      Delete
    3. Exactly ANON 6:47 am. Kaya nga "accent" is not just about the rate of speech but ALSO on how you pronounce the words. I'm not saying naman na they are mutually exclusive, magbasa ka ngang mabuti.

      Delete
    4. Uhm, ANON 2:22 & 6:47 French language doesn't fall on one category of accent. Accent can be assiociated with particular area of country or social class. Specially their language was mixed different dialects. I have studied and been able to speak Japanese. I was able to understand that they talk the same language but people from various places speak in accentuate manner. So instead of putting effort copying someone's accent. Reseach the formal or most normal way of how people (from a certain country) spoke their tongue.

      Delete
    5. And beside adopting accent is different from mimicking (which can sound awful and fake). She said it herself she was faking an accent. The lady must felt irratated and insulted the way she fake her words. Its different from being accustomed through it.

    6. Yeah, but I am surprised that we filipinos are very willing to speak the other languages fluently. But when ut comes to foreigners, even with the slang accent when they pronounce filipino words okay lang sa aten, tatawa lang pero gora. nakakasunod tayo sa rules nila pero dito chaotic. So sad

  31. There are racists everywhere. Not just in France. I've studied the language and culture for so many years now, and they're not the friendliest ppl out there..especially the older folks. I haven't experienced any racism with the French ppl I met. The thing is when you visit a foreign country, learn more about the ins and outs of their culture. What's ok for you might be insulting to others in their country. If she was mimicking a fake French accent, I can see why other ppl would be insulted and have a bad reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My two cents here--1) she was all praises for the French and only mentioned that one slight. That's it. Pero in typical nega fashion, people zoned in on the negative and are blowing this out of proportion. Rhian didnt seem to mind, and neither should you. 2) If you're in a foreign land and hear people speaking an accent, you cant help but imitate. So far only one person was "uncool" with it, while the rest of the French people dont mind. Dont bash her like she's ruining the French language. Wag kayong mema. I am not Rhian, just an objective observer.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I remember the last time I went to Paris, ang hirap kausapin nung ibang French, talagang they won't speak to you unless you speak their language, nakalibot lang kami nang maayos nung may nakilala kaming Indonesian immigrants na nakatira malapit sa hotel, buti na lang nakakapag-English sila. Anyway, 1996 pa 'yon, sana ngayon nagbago na.

    ReplyDelete
  34. medyo ma pag ka rude nga yung iba...My personal experience sa Paris....pero bansa nila yan pero kebs lang ....ayaw yata nila sa mga tourist...and opposite ng mga (most) Pilipino...hospitable at laging naka smile kahit fake pa...hahaha peace!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hmmmnnn...I dont think that justifies racism sa mga tourists na hindi kuha ang right accent ng language nila. Look at us Filipinos, we would laugh it off and even try to teach the foreigner how to say it correctly. Specially, we never see it as an insult! Talagang masama lang ugali ng matandang iyon.

    ReplyDelete
  36. seriously though, even here in Canada, if you go to a French speaking province like Quebec, they won't care about you. if you're lost or you need something they won't bother trying to understand what you're saying

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well well well..... ganyan talaga dito sa Europe, i live in the UK and its true. The older folks are the more racist ones. And more aggravated ang racism ngayon esp now that we are going to vote for UK to leave or remain in the EU.

    ReplyDelete
Tapos may lumapit sa akin na early-20's woman na african din- she offered me her phone baka raw may gusto akong tawagan. She offered me help. So ganyan talaga, may devils, may angels! hehehe! - baklang analyst

  41. Goodluck karamihan sa mga oldies na europeans masusungit, lalo na yun lumaki sa panahon ng world war 1 and 2 (Nazi occupations).

  42. It's not clear: If Rhian was speaking English w/ a fake French accent, then she was clearly being very offensive, even racist. If she was speaking French (highly unlikely), then she was being pretentious. I've heard only a handful of non-native speakers who could speak French like natives (apart of course from Jodie Foster and Kristin Scott Thomas).

Also, Paris hosts the fifth-largest contingent of foreign tourists annually. (Manila is not even in the top 100.) In short, Parisians don't care if tourists like them or not; tourists will come, regardless.

And don't compare with French Canadians. That shit's not real French.

  43. Everywhere you are there will be some racists, I live in France and they are not obviously known as racists. Gets your facts right, mema lang kasi mga iba kunwari intelihente.

    1. Agree. Racism exists everywhere. Maybe may mga stereotypes sa French people but to say that they're racist...its such a strong word..

  44. Now i know racists pala ang mga french. While yung mga english people. naamaze pa sila pag nkkpag english yung mga non-natives.

  45. My ex-boyfriend was a French and tina-try ko magspeak ng French a little bit noong kami, turo niya din, then corrected my pronounciation. We make light of it but he told me that French people don't really like it when foreigners trying to speak French but butchers it, most of them will think you're an "idiot" (no, at least you tried lol). And yes, if you go there you should learn few simple words like excuse me, merci, and French will appreciate ^^ and yes, my ex told me, French people thinks they're the best in the world lol

Did the old lady bring up Rhian's race in anyway para masabihan na racist siya? Ininsulto ba si Rhian based on her race? Baka race had nothing to do with it at talagang displeased lng ung old lady sa pgmmimick niya ng French accent? Or she found it disrespectful?

  48. Trying hard kasi mag English na lang

  54. French people are generally nice and helpful if you ask properly. Stayed there for a week and it was a very happy experience. I only have respect for their people. They may be a proud race but its something that we as Filipinos should emulate. Let us not generalize.

    1. Plus, as she said so herself, she was faking a French accent. The lady probably thought that she was making fun of the French language. So, unless the lady said something mean about Rhian being Asian, then the situation has nothing to do with racism. She needs to educate herself about the difference. Napaka-entitled ng outlook nya about "race" and using it loosely.

  55. Extreme extreme yung ugali nila. I work in a French company. The first project director was super bait and even attend Filipino Christmas parties pag December. Like papasok ka pa lang ng office and you're being so courteous naman, galit na agad. Kaloka! Minsan kailangan mo na lang din palampasin yung mga sinasabing below the belt like "why are we paying you??? blah blah!" ay grabe! Sarap sipain. haha!

    1. Tama! Maka-racist naman itong si Rhian. Sya naman ang nauna by "faking" a french accent. Sya na nagsabi so wala syang karapatan na mag-post about anyone being racist daw against her. Maka-pa-importante, wagas

  57. Na offend siguro ang French lady. She probably thought Rhian was making fun of her language. Nag pa sosyal siguro, trying hard na acting like she's French. I'd be offended too. French people are nice & warm if you're genuine. They can smell fake from a mile away!
