Letter from a Reader: Goodbye to Your Down Payment

Dear Fashion PULIS,

I would like to share with you an experience that I had with this menswear designer. I have been following you since day one when you posted the Puey Quiniones Scandal. Initilaly, I did not want to share this with anyone but I heard that this designer has other victims as well. So let this letter be a warning to all future clients of this designer.

I fell in love with his work when I attended one of his fashion shows so I met up with him and asked him to design me a suit for my cousin's wedding. He seemed nice and pleasant. After designing the suit, he discussed the materials with me, took my measurements, and asked for a down payment.

After that meeting, I never heard from him again. I kept calling and sending him SMS messages for weeks, but he never replied. He only got in touch with me through SMS message a few days before my cousin's wedding asking me when I am free for fitting. I told him that the wedding will take place in a few days and since he was not replying to my messages, I decided to buy a suit instead. I also texted him if he can return the down payment to me but he never replied ever again.

A few weeks ago I met up with my cousin who works for a magazine and she laughed at me when I shared this story with her. Apparently this designer is known for that. She told me that when one of the brands commissioned him to do some accessories for the show, he never delivered the items. She also mention horrible stories of clients from the province who gave him eighty five thousand for the down payment and never got the suits that they ordered. The family members asked him to return the money and he asked then if could pay in installment. My cousin and her friends from the fashion industry found it very ironic because he was able to shop in Prada abroad and even stage a fashion show overseas.

It is so sad that it is hard to trust people nowadays. I hope you can share my story with your readers so that they will not have the same experience. Thank you very much and more power to Fashion PULIS.

Sincerly yours
T.M.T.

  5. I think it's just plain useless to write letters to a publication to issue a warning to other people against this designer and that designer who has victimized hapless clients when these desingers can't even be named (kaya nga blind item eh). Is this just a way of venting out one's frustration to the whole world? It's not helping anyone. People have to be victimized themselves before learning a costly lesson and the vicious cycle goes on.

TRUE, HOW COULD WE BE WARNED ABOUT THIS DESIGNER, IF TMT DEOSNT INCLUDE HIS NAME ON HIS LETTER. I THINK YOUR LETTER IS USELESS FOR US BECAUSE YOU DIDNT FIGIVE US ANY CLUES. IT'S JUST ANOTHER LETTER THAT WASTES OUR TIME TO READ. SO IF YOU WANT US TO BE WARNED, BETTER GVE THE NAME OF THE DESIGNER. HE FOOLED YOU, WHY ARE YOU AFRAID TO MENTION HIS NAME AS A FORM OF REVENGE AND HOW MUCH DOES HE OWE YOU?

  9. people, there's such a thing called LIBEL. this is a good letter even though the designer wasn't named. it's a warning, all right? it's a precautionary tale for all of us to be careful about who we do business with. if the letter-sender named the designer, he risks himself and the blogger to getting sued for defamation.

lesson of the story is, make sure you have the proper paperwork/documentation such as receipts and contract before you hand anyone even a penny.

also, a little research won't hurt.

  10. Based on experience, these guys are brilliant but lack the professionalism that a business requires. Fashion is a business whether you like it or not.

Downpayments should always be set aside to buy raw materials and pay for labor etc, not for personal use. Also, being sensitive to clients is very important especially for made to order. They need to be happy and satisfied with your work. Make sure you write down all the details so u can plan your attack. Tedious and a pain in the ass but it is what it is. Being honest is another one..if you cannot deliver, don't accept the order.

  11. I suggest that if you can not give us the name of the designer because of legal matters then maybe you can give us a clue that will lead us to the designer you were referring to. It would be unfair for other designers too if you don't give clues.

  12. this will work 2 ways, either it will hurt another desiginer because people made a wrong guess or people will be warned about this low life. I suggest they put initials and correct the assumptions in private.

    ReplyDelete
  13. How could it be a defamation if it's the truth?

  14. Lesson #1 is to make sure that there is a contract or any form of paperwork that you can hold on to before giving a single centavo.
Lesson #2 is to always get a receipt for any payment made.

You can also get the srevices of a lawyer. Start with a Demand Letter. Check if that low-life designer is a member of any designer or fashion guild. File a report and keep your fingers crossed that they will act on it.
Reporting your case as a BI is good but it would also help your case if you make his world "smaller" by doing something more specific to get your money back.

  15. i think i know this one. he has the same initials with the first name of the actor who was recently spotted a bit drunk at a party. tama ba? he was featured during the Men's Fashion Week in Singapore.

Months before the wedding, my friend already made partial payments to this designer for the suits of her fiance and male entourage. one week before the wedding and they still havent had their fittings yet. wala man lang naipakita ni isang suit na natahi. and the wedding was held in a province down south pa. my friend was left with no choice but to purchase ready to wear suits from a department store.

sadly, this designer is a member of the young designers guild pa. cant they do anything about this? sinisira nila ang pangalan ng organization and pati reputasyon ng mga designers dito sa Pilipinas.

  16. if this is a true story, then it shouldn't be a blind item..therefore, they should mention the name. this article is really useless.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If this is fact then what is the point of this being a blind item? Without naming the guilty person, this blind item has no purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  18. kaya nga blind item eh. anubuhhh

    ReplyDelete
  19. kung gusto nyo papangalanan yung tao, why dont you watch imbestigador?! Dun ipapakita yung face ng criminal. blind items dito. hellerrrrrrrrr

i think the intention here is to tell us to be more cautious with our dealings with people esp if it involves money. lets not put those ppl sharing their stories here in danger. tandaan nyo, kung wala silang tsismis, wala tayong makukuhang BI dabah? wag na kayong umarte. just wait for a juicy clue from other readers:)

  21. I agree this designer is not professional at all. Once you give him your down payment, good luck on hearing from him again.

  22. sadly, a lot of fashion designers here in our country are pa-showbiz. they give it their all if it's for a high-profile client. pero pag hindi, sorry ka na lang.. they're in it just for the fame and fortune, and not for the job itself. it's not a sin to be successful but if you're robbing off people their money along the way, then that's just f***ed up. i'm not generalizing, pero dumadami na sila. sad...

  23. His names starts with J. Kakatapos lang ng fashion show nya sa shangrila.

  24. OMG. I have been a loyal follower of this blog and the "practices" of these fashion designers are appalling. I visited stylebible.ph to find out who this designer is and saw pictures from a recent fashion show of ANOTHER so called "international designer", whose designs remind me so much of past collections from Alexander McQueen & Givenchy. The collection I am referring to is the "Alexander McQueen Fall-Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear" & the "Givenchy Fall-Winter 2010 Haute Couture". OMG I hate "copycats".

  25. If this is J he made my husband and my bro's suit. Late lang talaga cia pero he delivers nmn. Mahirap lang nga cia contact-in. I dont think nmn (if this is J) he would make takbo sa DP, sana hindi cia ito kasi galing nya gumawa :)

  27. if this item is to warn the public, then it is highly appreciated if the name(s) would be revealed... how will the public be warned if no name is mentioned...
