Letter from a Reader: 150 PhP for an Extra Paper Bag?

Dear Fashion PULIS,

Last Friday, my friend and I went shopping in this high end luxury store. We bought a few aromatherapy diffusers and scented candles to give as gifts to our friends. Our total purchases amounted to more than six thousand pesos.

When the items were handed to us, they were placed in four small paper bags. Since my friend and I had to carry other things, I asked the SA if we can have two bigger paper bags to put the smaller paper bags inside them.

I had the shock of my life when the SA told me that I have to pay 150 PhP for an extra paper bag. I told him that I am a regular customer and this is the first time that I heard this  policy. He told me that he needed to get the approval of his manger before he can give me the two paper bags for free.

My friends and I waited for more than twenty minutes for the SA to come back. A friend of mine who was with us became impatient so he asked for the manager. When the manger saw him, she immediately recognized him as a regular customer. She hurriedly looked for the SA and instructed him to give the paper bags.

Do you think it is right for a high end luxury store to charge 150 PhP for an extra paper despite the fact that we just spend more than six thousand pesos in the store? I would love to hear from the readers of Fashion PULIS.

Thank you for posting my story and more power!

Yours truly,
PDR

  5. No. It is not proper for the store to charge you extra since your bill is above 1k.

Question? why do stores charge extra payment if you ask for additional plastic/paper bags? parang hindi naman tama at makatarungan yun since bumili ka naman sa kanila...hmp!

Under DTI parin ba yang ganyang case?

  6. it's unconscionable! we all know for a fact that they charge an arm and a leg for goods because they cover a lot of extras, and that includes paper bags , onion skin papers to wrap the goods and of course the 'prestige' of buying their brand!

  7. you shopped for 6000 pesos and you get worried with 150 pesos. and like what you've said, it's a "high end luxury store". expect prices to be high end as well.

one does not go into a boxing ring and later complaints about getting punched back. i dont mean to hate, but from one shopper to another -- just my two cents.

  10. I would pay extra 20 or 30 depending on the size when I ask for extra paper bag in R... but that's because I tell them that I want to individually pack some items as pamigay. This store you are talking about charges too high! And if its just to hold all your purchased items, it should be for free already. Gaack :)

  13. some stores really charge for an extra [paper] bag. i had a similar experience while buying jeans at their store in Cdo. i bought 3 pairs of jeans and the saleslady forced them all inside a reusable bag and it was too small it won't even close anymore and it looked like it would tear off any second. so i asked the saleslady if she could at least get another bag for the other jeans. she told me i had to pay for the other bag since they only give out one free bag per single purchase. i was really disappointed and told the saleslady how much that single purchase had costed me, i bought 3 jeans that were not even on sale, duh! it's never my nature to boost but i was so mad at that very moment that i lost it. so they gave me another bag, for free, for the other jeans. and i said THANK U! LoL!

it's been said, it's a high end luxury store. you know what to expect. At baka naman maganda yung paper bag, yung tipong pang-gift bag. gift bags could cost that much even higher, di ba? Dun ka na lang sa pang-masa na mall. libreng plastic bag! hahaha

Those bags may be cheap because its being mass-produced, and everybody in this blog knows it. I dont care who you are but if youre buying from a high end luxury store, prepare your wallets. Youre not just buying raw materials here, youre buying the name, the quality, the reputation, the brand and youre paying for the experience of buying itself. Welcome to the real world people. If you want to buy scented candles with cheap bags, go to SM or Puregold.

    LOL my sentiments EXACTLY!

It could also be that they're discouraging people to get more bags than they need to help the environment. Just maybe. I personally bring my own ecobags and refuse to receive plastic bags. Paper bags only if: 1.Paper bag is pretty; 2.Eco bags are full; 3. It's a gift for someone or I'm buying things for someone else.

  32. i think it's not right to be judging these people who bought 6k worth of aroma diffusers & scented candles. it's their money, ok? not our business to complain how they spend it. sheesh!

but the php150 is what's the issue here. i mean, why would you charge people for a paper bag? im pretty sure the cost of the paper bag is already accounted for in the actual cost of items. so, why ask for payment?

good customer service is providing comfort to your customers. if you see that they're having prob carrying the many items they bought, then good customer service would prompt you to do something about it, OFFER THE EXTRA PAPER BAG FOR FREE!

  33. This post is just way too funny....especially if you include the comments :)

  34. by the way, it's there in the letter that they bought those items to give as gifts to friends. bakit? rich lng ba kaya magbigay ng gift? malay nyo, pinag-ipunan un money, sinet aside for this purpose because they want to give nice gifts to friends. napakajudgmental talga ng ibang tao dito. ka-init ng ulo! hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's not the letter sender's fault na kaya nya gumastos ng 6k for some "walang kwentang scented shit". Ano kayabangan dun? I think he/she included the amt to illustrate na his/her purchase amount was significant and yet he/she got shabby treatment so what more ung mga paisa isang item lang ang binibili. The store should have a written notice posted in plain sight about the P150 charge for extra paper bags, dagdagan na lang ng churva na this drive is in the interest of encouraging shoppers to be more eco friendly in their shopping habits yada yada. Over naman ung mga kulang na lang icrucify si letter sender for his/her spending habits. Personally I don't have 6k to spend for "walang kwentang scented shit" either but nothing about the shopper's behavior and letter strike me as mayabang. Hindi ung amount ng paper bag per se ang shocking, first it's the bad customer service ie lack of finesse on the part of the SA which is unbecoming of an SA in a luxury store and second it's the lack of due notice by the store to their customers regarding new store policies.

  40. i am a biz owner and i think it is ok to charge extra for additional paper bags. to begin with, the candles already have individual paper bags.

the problem is the amount being charged. Big plain brown paper bags cost around P17 in divi so additional P50 is reasonable.

Here in Saudi Arabia, bumili ka ng isang pirasong chocolate sa Patchi worth P120, you can request for kahit ilang paper bags, kahit ano pang size. Ang mga tao dito, hindi gahaman katulad dyan. And I noticed, most of the SA's in luxury stores there are either rude or judgmental. Nakakatawa talaga Pinas. That's why di umuunlad eh.

  48. here, where i live it is a common practice for stores to limit plastic bags to 2 pieces. we pay for extra bags. the reason for this is to encourage people to reuse & recycle.
it never hurts to try bringing some reusable bags when shopping next time.

  50. Paper Bags are cheaper by volume! I know because my friend is in general service of a big retail company.
However, paper bags are also part of company product expenses.
So as my friend discuss to me: they limit paper bag or sometimes barcoded them to record how many was given in a transaction.
Whether you are valued client or not, bought high end or expensive stuff: its wiser to not abuse them!
I GUESS the shop wanted to give their clients a LESSON once in a while by asking 150!
& yes you can get surprised & react to it!
THE Moral lesson here should be: practicality! While packing your purchased, you can instruct the sales person that you want them in 2 bags para its not stuffy or heavy. Ganon!
Di ba! Peace! Bawal sa fashionpulis ang pikon:)

  51. The comments are funny... LOL

It's also funny that the letter sender thinks just because she already spent 6K she/he shouldn't have to pay that much for an extra bag. Don't get me wrong, 150php sounds high for an extra bag but the entitlement that the letter sender felt was HILARIOUS. Then when the Manager recognized the friend she immediately ordered her employee to just give the bag. I would feel sorry for new customers who'd ask for an extra bag and pay 150php. They're sh!t out of luck coz the Manager won't recognize them... LOL

    ReplyDelete
  52. it's the store's discretion if they want to give you an extra paper bag. they gave you one for each of the item that you've purchased.

you said that you "asked" for 2 bigger bags, seems more like you're DEMANDING for 2 bigger bags. because if you "asked" you were prepared to be declined, but no. hence the letter to FP. =)

    ReplyDelete
  53. You people are sooo judgemental..

And yes 150 is a wee too much for a paperbag.. An expensive store should have better services to their paying customers .. Its not about not being able to pay the 150...

  55. Kung tutuusin kasi, extra paper bag na ang hinihingi mo. The store gave you enough. You wanted extra, hence the charge. I think the high price is to discourage people from asking for extra bags. Sayang ang paper, gagamitin lang naman status symbol kapag may kailangan bitbitin next time...aminin!!!!

  56. you should've asked the store assistant to have the items placed in a bigger paper bag rather than asking for an extra paper bag.

    ReplyDelete
  57. You know how sometimes you see paper bags being sold on the street? Maybe that's why they charge 150. To discourage such acts, because it also cheapens the brand's image.

Not saying that you would sell the paper bag, but having extras fall into the wrong hands...

    ReplyDelete
  58. next time pag bibili ka ulit ng mamahaling kandila na err...for the people who commented negatively, bring your own reusable bag with matching stroller pa (mabigat din ang kandila huh)...daming shopping bags with stroller sa 168 worth 150 lang din... hehe

  60. I think tama lang na singilin siya ng PhP 150 for an extra paper bag. May four small paper bags na kasi siyang nagamit, so I don't think nagkuripot yung store about giving away paper bags.

  61. What was supposed to be a serious (in letter sender's point of view) post, actually became a hilarious one! LOL

  62. This letter sender needs a visit from greenpeace. I'm not an environment advocate, but it's really sad to see that people think this way.

    ReplyDelete
  63. It's called encouraging people to be eco-friendly. DON'T YOU GET IT???!!! THE REASON WHY THEY CHARGE SO MUCH FOR EXTRA PAPER BAGS IS TO DISCOURAGE PEOPLE FROM ASKING OR EVEN BUYING IT!!! It's a high end, luxury store, they cannot do away with paper bags (YOU DON'T PUT A HARRY WINSTON IN A PLASTIC BAG OR ECO-BAG) so the most they can do is lessen the use of it which includes mga taong hingi ng hingi ng bags! Clearly, they don't want to sell these paper bags which is why they priced it outrageously. If they priced it at P10, would it stop you? My gosh, and is 25 minutes of your time waiting for the manager worth a free paper bag?!! Congratulations on your free paper bag! Ka-cheapan ha!

    ReplyDelete
  64. As for the question, yes it is right for the luxury story to charge P150 for a paper bag. If it's reasonable? Yes. First, you asked for an extra paper bag. Kung sinabi mo na instead of two small ones, isang malaki na lang, baka pwede pa. Eh ang gusto mong mangyari extra pa eh. Kahit gano kalaki ginastos mo, they have their policy. Maybe they are doing that to discourage people who ask for extra bags and sell it to others. Maraming ganyan. Or perhaps it's their way of supporting environmental causes. Whatever their reason is, sa kanila na yun.

  65. dami nag popost ng comment ng mga ka swateran ng mga tao... the issue is not about the cost of her spending... its the after sales treatment. Bumili ka na nga ng 6k , dinagdagan ka pa ng bayarin na 150... yung mga nag cocomment dto ng kung ano anong negative about the sender , perhaps never nka experience ng ganitong shopping experience... kasi sanay n sanay sa mga bakyang bilihan... Hinde mayabang yung sender dahil di nya pinangalanan ang sarili nya... common sense naman jan...

    ReplyDelete
  66. Correct! @Anonymos Oct. 5 3:00am. Hindi siya about sa price ng paperbag! The way they were treated is the issue. And yung mga nagsasabi dyan na 150 lang hindi pa mabayaran? Pakielam nyo ba, pera nya yon! Hindi porket may pera sya he can just throw it away.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oct5 3:30 and 3:30am

After Sales treatment?? What treatment? That the store clerk said the rule is for them to pay an extra 150php? It is the store's rule that he's trying to uphold coz that's how he and his fellow employees were trained or told to do when someone asks for an extra bag. How was that a "treatment" of any kind just because the customers are regular shoppers there. 150php is still a bit high IMO but the entitlement from these customers just because they already spent 6K and coz they shop there a lot is atrocious. They sat there and waited to prove a point that the Manager knows them and to get a free bag. Of course it's about the freaking bag. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Okay, for Anonymous October 5, 2011 3:00am and Anonymous October 5, 2011 3:33am who BOTH said that the issue is not the price but the after sales treatment, may I direct you a sentence in the closing paragraph that said: "Do you think it is right for a high end luxury store to charge 150 PhP for an extra paper despite that we just spend more than six thousand pesos in the store?"

In addition to that, the title of this post is: "Letter from a Reader: 150 PhP for an Extra Paper Bag?"

Perhaps you two missed these points :)

Letter sender did not name herself, not because she is mayabang, but because she's afraid to accept truthful comments such as most of those already posted here which is about her being out of line in complaining about paying an extra 150 pesos. Yes, you're right na pera nya yon but common sense dictates that once you enter a luxury store, don't expect everything to be free.

    ReplyDelete
  70. the point is the bad service not the cost of the bag! plus stop criticizing the letter sender, right naman nya to buy whatever she wants! plus they only asked for the bag to help carry the other stuff! mas magalit kayo sa mga capable adults that have yayas following them around to carry their stuff!

  76. Gosh, so much hatred! The issue here is if it really was necessary to charge P150 for a paper bag. Regardless if you bought a 50peso item, these things- paperbag or plastic, shouldn't be charged to the customer. However, if it was done to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle (which I highly doubt), then perhaps it is reasonable.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Had to agree with other people's comments here. Overpriced but you're paying for their name above else. Anyway, its rather cumbersome to wait for the manager to fix the situation so for convenience's sake, as what you claim it to be, pay for the bag, badmouth the store to anyone and never return to it ever. ha ha ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  78. alam mo ba kung ilang puno ang pinuputol para lang sa paper bag na yan?tapos magrereklamo ka kung pinababayaran sayo ang extra bag...many stores are implementing a rule that when a costumer ask for another paper/plastic bag, they have to pay for it...

  82. If I were the letter sender, I would probably do the following:

    a) pay the 150 pesos but ask for an official receipt (if the manager can decide to give the bag for free, yet the cashier is asking for payment, baka sa bulsa lang nya mapunta yun and not really the store's policy of charging for an extra bag)

    b) return the four small bags and ask for a bigger bag to hold everything that I bought

Just to share, last December, I bought 8 pieces of tops in Forever 21 and politely asked the cashier to place it in 8 separate bags. She then smiled and told me, "Ma'am, i'll just place everything in one bag plastic big, easier for you to carry, and then I'll just give you 8 small plastic bags." Wow, that's great customer service!

  83. I carry a a foldable eco-bag in my purse where ever I go. Para walang hassle sa ganyan.

Shops here would you usually decline requests para sa extra bags kasi baka magpuslit ng ibang items/shoplift. Alam niyo naman ang security dito msa Pinas kakaiba, kung baril nga naipupuslit paloob sa mall tapos yung kaduda-dudang plastic bag na may resibo yun pa ang sinisita.

  84. LOL @ the comments! Last Christmas I bought around 15 PHP60+ chocolates and 5 P165 chocolates from Marks & Spencer. Binigyan talaga nila ako ng free paper bag for each choc! at least PHP10 siguro yung paper bag so mga 200 pa sana kinita nila kung may fee.

  88. Always bring an eco foldable bag para hindi ka na manghinayang sa Php150 for an extra bag....

  89. Okay lang to spend Php6,000 for gifts pero nagrereklamo sa Php150 na bag??? Ganito ang ugali ng mga nouveau riche at social climbers. When you're in a luxury shop, be prepared to shell out money. LUXURY SHOP nga eh. Para sa Php150 mag-aabala ka pang sumulat sa FP hahaha...

  90. Yeah its too pathetic to act like that dear sender

It's true that the paper bag maybe too costly thinking that you have spent so much there,..

But you were the one who gave them the impression of being a stupid spender in the first place for buying 6k worth of scented candles.

That's why they thought that asking for an additional fee wouldn't bother your pocket that much ;P HHAHAHA
