For celebrities who intend to have long careers, being out of sight means being lost in the consciousness of the public and their followers. Given the numerous personalities offering entertainment, the public can easily change loyalties and discard a former idol for some new, younger, and better. On the one hand, for senior celebrities, such decisions from their former followers can be a hard pill to swallow. On the other hand, other celebrities are too secure and do not really mind their dwindling number of followers.
When a fame-hugging celebrity does not have a project, such as a soap opera or endorsements shown in various media outlets, he/she will make sure that he/she is still in the loop. Sometimes, friendships with the press and other celebrities can work wonders, as he/she can be mentioned even if he/she does not have a project. A simple greeting in a writer’s column or an on-air greeting from a host can add some recall to a “missing celebrity.” In the age of social media, a tag can do wonders for recall.
However, certain celebrities exploit other means to make sure they are not lost in the eyes of the public. The loud and gutsy celebrities can create their issues so they can be talked about. Setting off a controversial issue that is picked up by the mainstream press or retweeted/regrammed by netizens is a sure way to get attention. Such action can be risky, though, and only a few can stand by the fire created by their spark.
In the case of a Former Famous personality (FF), no one can top her way of getting attention. When she feels she’s no longer being talked about, she taps into her network and finds a creative way to be back in the loop. Allegedly, when FF realized that her projects had stopped generating attention for her, she decided to do a subtle thing to make sure she’s seen by the public. One phone call and some personal funding and she’s suddenly on the cover of a highly anticipated magazine. That’s how she makes her money work for her. Nonetheless, after getting oohs and aahs for the cover shoot, she’s back to square one.
‘The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one's life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.’ – Billy Graham
