Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz is not a judge in the 65th Miss Universe competition, but the first Filipina beauty queen to bring home the crown already has her picks for the top five.

Diaz said on top of her mind are the girls with whom she had interacted in the times she had attended the Miss Universe events.

Among those she named was Miss Universe Canada Siera Bearchell, but she said the 23-year-old beauty needs to shed some weight.

"If Canada could lose 8 pounds, I love her face. Am I right? She’s beautiful," she said in an interview with ANC's Headstart on Friday.

Asked if Miss Canada would really have to lose that much, Diaz relented and said “Okay, five.”

Diaz also said she finds Miss Venezuela, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Thailand, and Miss China "beautiful" and "gorgeous."

She also believes the Philippines' bet, Maxine Medina, could be among the top contenders, but admitted that she would only be a "saling pusa" (token candidate).

"She cannot nga be the winner. She can be first runner-up. I hope I’m proven wrong for the first time in my life. I want her to win. I want us to be so proud, but you know, that’s life," she said.

"We are the host. The host country cannot [win]. I cannot serve lechon and bring it back to my kitchen kasi I’m giving it to you," she added.

The Wrong Gesture

When the absence of Talented Personality (TP) in a show started to be noticed, viewers assumed that his disappearance was nothing more than a typical management decision that happens all the time. Usually, when a personality no longer fits the jive of a program, he/she is removed to make sure harmony remains.

However, TP was removed as a result of his assuming behavior. Long suspected to be closeted, TP was respected by the staff and celebrity co-workers, who just let him be. They let TP pretend to be a straight man with no attraction to his fellow. Everything was going finely until one incident made people rethink his work ethics.

TP was assigned to work with Hot Discovery (HD), who did his duties with glee. HD was game in whatever he was asked to do for the sake of the show. As time passed, HD showed his thoughtfulness to the production team. He was easy to work with and had no qualms about having to be on time and would even bring food. During some instances, HD would bring extra food for TP.

TP thought that HD’s kind gestures meant something. Eventually, he became attracted, but he could not show it because he was so particular about keeping his straight image. When an opportunity presented itself, TP took advantage and tried to make moves on HD. During an out of town show, TP asked HD to accompany him to his room. HD obliged out of respect. When they got to the room, TP told HD to try the bathtub. Sensing something was amiss, HD excused himself. However, as he was making his way towards the door, TP allegedly grabbed his crotch and started kissing him passionately on the neck. Bigger and definitely stronger, HD pushed TP away.

Trying not to be angry, HD told the production what happened and asked if he could just be partnered with another talent. After his incident report, the production had to take the side of TP. However, TP did not take this incident quietly and filed his resignation. Worse, he said he was setup to add drama to their program to raise its ratings. Of course, the production could not do anything as TP was fuming. Thus, his resignation was accepted.

In a video aired on Thursday, Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina wrongly said that former First Lady Imelda Marcos invented the terno.

The Filipina bet made the assertion in a recorded video, aired during the live preliminary round of the 65th Miss Universe competition held Thursday night. Her short clip was taken during the candidates' visit to Vigan, where they modeled ternos.

"The terno was actually invented by our former first lady, Imelda Marcos. She invented these butterfly sleeves and they use it to cover their face," Medina said in the video.

However, in "Fashionable Filipinas: An Evolution of the Philippine National Dress in Photographs, 1860-1960," written by Gino Gonzales and Mark Lewis Higgins, women in the country were photographed wearing the modern terno as early as 1910, years before Mrs. Marcos was even born.

In an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer published in 2015, Gonzales also argued that no one person invented the terno. "It was a collective effort," he said, adding that not even National Artist for Fashion Ramon Valera can be credited for it.

In the official website of National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Valera is said to have given the Philippines its visual icon to the world via the terno.

"In the early 40s, Valera produced a single piece of clothing from a four-piece ensemble consisting of a blouse, skirt, overskirt, and long scarf. He unified the components of the baro't saya into a single dress with exaggerated bell sleeves, cinched at the waist, grazing the ankle, and zipped up at the back."

The description further says that Valera "constructed the terno’s butterfly sleeves, giving them a solid, built-in but hidden support. To the world, the butterfly sleeves became the terno's defining feature."

"We want to correct some misconceptions, including the idea that Ramon Valera invented the terno; he did not,” Gonzales said. "No one person invented it. It was a collective effort. The removal of the pañuelo, which is usually attributed to Valera, happened way, way before he removed it."

Marcos did have the nickname "The Iron Butterfly" for having the terno, the ones inspired by Valera's rendition of the national dress, as her preferred outfit for public appearances.
