Movie Review: Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako

Main Cast: Edgar Allan Guzman, Michael Pangilinan, Katrina Michelle Legaspi
Director: Joven Tan
MTRCB Rating: R-13
Produced by: Viva Films

This is a love story between best friends… a one-sided love, I should say. Mark (Edgar Allan) puts a real-life gay face to someone who is torn between friendship and love for his childhood friend, Red (Michael).

Without a doubt, Alan and La Aunor (in cameo role) stood out in this film about love without gender and the complexities it brings around his unconventional family. Alan is credibly gay as Mark, perfectly matched by Nora’s intensity as his non-conformist mother.

In the local setting, gay-themed movies present issues that are often labeled as taboo, but are real and happening, as in the likes of Coco Martin in "Masahista", or Nathan Lopez  in "Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros". Mark’s transition of a homosexual boy’s coming of age is quite easy to the eye of an open-mind. Closeted gays are oftentimes powerless.

Mark’s love for best friend Red, though unrequited, does not seem to diminish through the years that they were together. In fact, the clueless Red has become his inspiration and source of strength, amid obvious fears that he will be judged by their ‘barkada’ and by Red himself.

It is a good enough story, only not good enough as presented on the big screen. For one, the story’s flow and narrative fall short, at times awkward in some scenes. The script could have been improved for more impact, as well as the acting of some actors who delivered them.

Katrina Legazpi aka Hopia seems not convincing as Mark’s friend and confidante Kaye. For someone who’s been in the industry for so long, Hopia has yet to master real acting and being at ease in front of the camera. A good workshop is in order.

Michael Pangilinan, on the other hand, could have prepared more seriously for this movie, it being his film debut. He is given good scenes, but he fails to give them justice. Worth mentioning is the confession scene when the very nervous Mark, tearfully let out all his pent-up emotions to Red, telling him how much he cared and loved and respected their friendship. But Red obviously lacks the emotion to react believably. He is not able give life to his character, all he does is deliver memorized lines.

Luckily, Joross Gamboa and Matt Evans help save the day. The two are visibly at home with their characters as part of the barkada, dishing out everything they can to uncover the mystery behind their friend Mark. Never a dull moment, their scenes are hilarious, as they recall each other’s ‘experiences’ with gay classmates during their high school days. These scenes had the audience in stitches. Oh, the long love letters, too…quite hard to imagine at this point.

Needless to say, the presence of Nora Aunor is a big treat. Her ‘cameo’ role added more substance to the movie, along with Ana Capri’s.  Ask not, she won’t be La Aunor for nothing.

Undeniably, the role of family is highlighted. Indeed, it is not so much about gender preference, as it is about the depth of family love and acceptance.

Friendship over romance. Brolove or bromance. It’s the ultimate test – whichever side you’re in.

“Pare Mahal Mo Raw Ako”, is inspired by the song of the same title, written by the movie’s director himself, Joven Tan and interpreted by Michael Pangilinan.

Behind His Professing of Love is a Gap in Loyalty

After being linked with several competent performers, Male Talent (MT) finally realized that love was not elusive. As a performer, MT distinguished himself with his own style of wowing the audience with his voice and dance moves. His accomplishments make him a notch above his contemporaries. However, throughout the years, his home network has molded him into an all-around talent, indicating respect for his potential and value to the station.

Like any public personality, who grew up in front of the camera, the life of MT has always been an open book and thus, people were interested whenever he had new relationships with partners and his dealings with powerful people who were instrumental to achieving his fame. Thus, viewers were touched whenever MT would express his pain that has resulted from his breakups and viewers were happy when he would fall in love.

Finally, when MT found love with Lovely Partner (LP), his fans appreciated the genuine feelings that he would express with no qualms in public and in his social media accounts. During the course of their relationship, MT would show his candid behavior with LP. Based on his actions, MT seemed to have found the perfect match in LP.

However, the perfect-image boyfriend was cast in doubt during one of their vacations out of town. During a party, MT met a Pretty DJ (PD). He was attracted to PD to the point that he initiated for them to know each other. As soon as he obtained access to her account, MT started to send flirty messages to PD, which gave the impression that there seems to be a dent in his relationship with LP.

While MT could claim that all he did was an exchange of harmless words and that he just needed a boost to his ego, those who found out wondered why he was not contented with LP. Despite her beauty and reciprocation of his affection, MT gave in to a flirting episode. Thus, the rumor of LP having bipolar episodes became sound justification for MT’s actions. Nonetheless, while flirting might seem harmless to MT, women might not agree with him. For some, flirting is a form of cheating even if nothing physical has happened. The meeting of minds could be more dangerous than any physical contact.

‘If a man, who says he loves you, won’t tell you the details of a private conversation between him and another woman you can be sure he is not protecting your heart. He is protecting himself and the women he has feelings for. Wise women simply see things as they are, not as their low self-esteem allows.’ - Shannon L. Alder

3. Consume more fiber – the more fiber you have, the more you can avoid blood sugar spike up. Fiber makes you feel fuller that helps in the avoidance of overeating and over consuming of unhealthy products.

4. Get a good sleep – less than 6 hours of sleep causes high blood sugar levels and increases insulin resistance. When you get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep, you are avoiding increase in the blood sugar levels and insulin resistance.

Repost: Miss PH Earth Candidate Bellatrix Tan Speaks up on #ElNiñoLaNiña Answer

Source: www.rappler.com

Bellatrix Tan, Zamboanga's representative at Miss Philippines Earth 2016, spoke up about her viral response during the first question and answer segment on coronation night.

On Saturday, June 11, the Top 12 of the pageant were asked to pick a hashtag out of a bowl and speak about the issue surrounding it. Bellatrix picked #ElNiñoLaNiña, and said: "El Niño, La Niña. El Niño is what we are facing right now. If we do simple things like planting trees, then we will not experience drought, right? So if we start now, we will achieve La Niña. Thank you."

In an interview with DZMM on Monday, Bellatrix defended herself from the criticism she received following her answer.

"I know po talaga 'yung El Niño and La Niña. Kasi alam ko po talaga na 'yung El Niño, drought po, dry. Sa La Niña naman po, heavy rainfall. Kasi nung na-realize ko na mali pala 'yung pag-deliver ko, 'yung pag-answer ko, bigla pong nag-react na ako. Sinabi ko na nga po dun sa host na alam ko kung ano ang La Niña, heavy rainfall," she said, adding that she does not know why she answered like that.

(I really know what El Niño and La Niña are. I know that El Niño means drought, dry. La Niña, on the other hand, is heavy rainfall. When I realized that my delivery was wrong, the way I answered, I reacted right away. I told the host that I knew what La Niña was, heavy rainfall.)

If given a chance to fix her answer, Bellatrix said she would say: "El Niño and La Niña are both effects of climate change. If we don't do our part, we will really experience drought and heavy rainfall. Act now so we can have a better future."

The 20-year-old Communications graduate also gave a message to those who criticized her, saying they should try to join a national pageant so they'll know how hard it is. She added that in such a situation, even simple questions can be difficult to answer.

At Miss Philippines Earth 2016, Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong crowned her successor, Puerto Princesa's Imelda Schweighart, who will represent the country at Miss Earth 2016 later this year. – Rappler.com
