Movie Review: Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery)

Cast: John Lloyd Cruz, Piolo Pascual, Hazel Orencio, Alessandra De Rossi, Joel Saracho, Susan Africa, Bernardo Bernardo, Cherie Gil, Angel Aquino, Sid Lucero, Ely Buendia
Director-Screenwriter-Editor: Lav Diaz
MTRCB Rating: PG

Critically acclaimed film icon, Lav Diaz has once again proven his genius in his latest film "Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis.“ It won the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, given to a feature film that "opens new perspectives on cinematic art."

Filmed in black and white, in very slow screenplay, the eight-hour epic expounds in great detail how - for thirty (30) days in the forest - the grieving Gregoria de Jesus aka Oryang (Hazel Orencio) searches in vain for the body of her husband, Andres Bonifacio, believed to have been killed by rival rebel troops, allegedly on orders of General Emilio Aguinaldo. She expresses her unspeakable grief, how her aimless wandering around the forest has revealed man’s unmatched wickedness towards another.

The Filipino Soul

Diaz incorporated various characters and elements in the movie, notably those from Jose Rizal’s controversial novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. The viewers’ political consciousness, particularly towards the Spanish regime, gets roused as Crisostomo Ibarra/Simoun (Piolo Pascual) and Isagani (John Lloyd Cruz), come into the picture.

In Fili, Isagani, a poet and idealist, dreams of having a school for native Filipinos to help them uplift their lives. On the other hand, Simoun provokes hatred to spark the revolution and fight the abuses of the Spanish government. In the film, he gets shot by Basilio (Sid Lucero). Wounded, Simoun is fortunate to have Isagani as his savior, crossing jungles and mountains in a hammock when he needs to be secretly moved to Isagani’s uncle, Padre Florentino’s place.

Together, while hidden in the forest, Isagani and Simoun recite 'Mi Ultimo Adios,' a poem Rizal wrote before his execution. The monologue is powerful to capture the nationalist spirit of the Filipino viewer.

Needless to say, Diaz aims to awaken the Filipino soul and identity suppressed after centuries of Spanish colonial rule - not to mention, the dark years under Marcos’ Martial Law regime.

Betrayal

The beautiful woman from Silang, Cesaria Belarmino (Alessandra De Rossi), one of Gregoria’s companions in the mountains, belatedly confessed to her that she was pushed by circumstances to become the kept woman of a Spanish General (Bart Guingona). As such, Cesaria becomes accomplice in the Battle of Silang that resulted in the rape and death of women, children and old folk. She also admitted to having a hand in the capture of Bonifacio, earning for her the tag "Taksil ng Katipunan (the traitor of Katipunan)." Indeed, even then, Filipino women were as capable of anything as men, even betrayal for self-preservation.

Myths and Legends

Aling Hule (Susan Africa) plays the grieving mother who has lost her two young sons in an uprising, Karyo (Joel Saracho) a very sick man – both are with Gregoria in the mountain inhabited by the three Tikbalangs (half horse/half human played by Bernardo Bernardo, Cherry Gil and Angel Aquino) Likewise, the presence of the strange cult called Colorum doing its rituals in a big cave, headed by a queer priest (Ronnie Lazaro) once more illustrates the richness of the Filipino mythology.

Immersion

As a viewer, you have to condition yourself before you watch the movie. Be prepared physically, mentally and psychologically as it is an ultimate test of one’s patience and endurance. Expect to be immersed in the story as you breathe and live in every scene - long stretched, no narrative - while it consumes you. You’ll be hooked. No chance to get bored. You hold your screaming bladder as you don’t want to miss a thing.

It is with great comfort that the leading actors delivered more than what they could - Piolo, John Lloyd, Hazel Orencio, Alex de Rossi and the rest. Passion for the craft, for a rare opportunity to do a project of such magnitude definitely became a factor. It's not a walk in the park making an 8-hour movie with a director of Diaz's caliber who refuses to be limited by a standard. Any actor will be eaten up if he/she is not up to par. There's only one word to sum it all up - commitment - and they have tons of it. Kudos!

The film is a departure from the norm. For one, there’s no musical score to highlight the scenes to play with the emotion. There’s a dearth of close-up shots, too. But these will not be a bother as you get deeply engrossed in the story. What feels like a very sluggish flow to ‘nothingness’ ultimately gets to you, like magic.

“You learn that you don't watch a Lav Diaz film. You experience it," said actor Bernardo Bernardo.

The Power In Our Hands

Towards the end, Isagani engages Padre Florentino in serious talk. The conversation is real, it hits home in real time. He asks his uncle what curse has befallen his beloved Philippines, the promised land and its people, as it struggles repeatedly to fight the cycle of poverty, abuses and corruption. Padre Florentino’s reply has never been so familiar, “ You, the youth have the power to change it. “

“ Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis “ is still showing in cinemas.

Behind Her Nice and Lovable Image is a Slightly Mischievous Woman

Together with the popularity of loveteams comes the mentality of exclusivity, which means that the involved actor and actress should only be seen together in professional and personal events. Worse, if either is seen with another personality, expect fandoms to go ballistic in social media questioning loyalty and character as well as bashing the so-called third party. However, some can get away with the exclusivity and develop closeness with other celebrities by hiding away from nosy fans.

Sometime ago, Talented Actress (TA) and Cute Co-star (CC) developed closeness because of their project. While TA has her Constant Screen partner (CS), she and CC managed to get to know each other quite well. As the production saw the developing closeness of the two, they did not mind it whenever TA and CC would ask permission to leave for a quiet place so they can practice throwing their lines. Besides, CC would always bring a friend with him, and thus, the production felt safe. Sometimes, CS was not needed on location, so he was not around.

One time, TA asked CC if they could practice their blocking and lines. CC agreed and after a while, CC told his friend not to go with them, as they’ll just be in the van, anyway. Upon reaching the van, CC told the driver to leave them alone. Given that the location was hot, staying in the van would be a good option. Thus, no one bothered them as they did say they were going to rehearse their lines. Time passed and finally, TA stepped out of the van and the friend noticed that her hair seems to be a bit ruffled. Finally, the friend asked why TA and CC took much time. Like a typical boy who kisses and tells, CC smacked his lips and fingers.

After that incident, TA and CC became closer. TA would send sweet messages to CC, but he was smart enough not to be entangled with TA, as the fandom will certainly not give him any peace. When CC was out on a date with Pretty Celebrity (PC), TA sent one of her messages. CC then showed the message to PC, who reacted by posting a seemingly innocent status in her social media account. TA would not let it pass and she responded with a cryptic message. Given that her followers had no idea where that message came from and to whom it was really addressed, they let it be.

Apparently, image is really just smokes and mirrors. Behind the innocent and sweet image is someone who is quite playful with the boys. Had CS found out what has been happening, he might be provoked to act, that is, if they really are together, as their fans would like to believe.

‘When he worked, he really worked. But when he played, he really PLAYED.’― Dr. Seuss

Repost: Wife of Tom Jones Succumbs to Cancer

Source: www.bbc.com

The wife of singer Tom Jones has died after a "short but fierce battle with cancer", it has been announced.

Melinda Rose Woodward - known as Linda - who was married to the star for 59 years, died on Sunday morning at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

"Surrounded by her husband and loved ones, she passed away peacefully," a statement on 75-year-old Sir Tom's website said.

He recently cancelled concerts due to a "serious illness" in his family.

Sir Tom, famous for hits including Delilah, It's Not Unusual and Sex Bomb, had been due to perform at a number of his tour dates in Japan, Thailand, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, but apologised to fans after pulling out.

He met his wife, his childhood sweetheart, when they were both 12 and growing up together in Treforest, Pontypridd. Melinda Trenchard, as she was then, came from a family of local cinema owners.

In an interview with the BBC last year, he said he would watch her pass his window with friends as he lay in bed suffering with tuberculosis for two years.

"I was in love with her when I had TB when I was 12," he said.

"And I would be thinking 'oh my god, let's get this TB over with so I can hold her'.

"So I really ached, you know. When they say heart ache, I physically ached."

They started dating at 15 and used to meet at a phone box at the end of Sir Tom's street in Treforest "because it would be raining - in Wales it rains quite a lot".

"And we were so wrapped up in one another it's unbelievable."

The couple married when they were 16 in 1957 - and later had the phone box moved from Treforest to their home in Los Angeles.

They had one son Mark, 59, who is also Sir Tom's manager.

They had wanted more children, but the singer revealed in his 2015 autobiography, Over The Top And Back, that a miscarriage had left his wife infertile.

Over the years, Lady Woodward had to face allegations of Sir Tom's numerous affairs and he said she once hit him: "And I took it because I knew I was wrong."

She also became reclusive in later years, rarely leaving their Beverly Hills home, where he said she battled emphysema and had depression.

However, Sir Tom said she remained the most important person in his life.

"We love one another," he told the BBC.

"I think love conquers all and it's the truth. And a sense of humour... because we grew up together, we're both Welsh. You know, growing up in south Wales, there's a certain sense of humour there."
