Is it Time to Say Goodbye?

Looks like the start of the year has become an axing season for this network. Apart from a weekly show that already went off air, one is on the chopping board anytime soon, there is another show AS in the line up that might bid adieu soon.

People will be shocked for sure as AS’s forthcoming fate is not at all being felt even within AS's production team. Yet major players and insiders have expressed same sentiments – that the show is seriously being considered to be removed from airing.

To be fair, AS has been enjoying good ratings. The sad fact according to insiders is that AS is rather difficult to mount and can be really financially draining. Simply put, advertising income can hardly meet the costs of production. Now network heads are meeting up for a replacement soon. Suggested stars are buddies who have recently bonded in a hit project.

The show has survived many controversies, yet it stood tall and AS’ stars to this day stand united with each other. To the credit of the show’s production team, controversies in the past within AS were immediately ironed out so as not to jeopardize the show’s content. But as they say it over and over again, in showbiz, you’re only as good as your last performance. Nothing is ever permanent!

Does He Really Support Film Piracy?

Being part of the movie industry, there are many expectations from stars. First on the list is image. Ideally, what the actors project comes close to what they really are. Second, they are expected to abide by the regulations the industry strongly advocates. One of these the actors are not expected to condone is film piracy - for very obvious reasons.

While training at the gym, DA called his assistant, who came up to meet him. The presence of the assistant called attention as DA might be feeling something and that he might need help. Then, DA was heard instructing his assistant to purchase copies of the latest movies. Since the gym was located at a favorite area of the anti-piracy raids, the other gym clients realized DA had just asked his assistant to purchase pirated movies.

Those who overheard the request of DA were amused that such an actor of his calibre actually patronize such DVDs. DA yet his siblings project a classy and sassy lifestyle. He also has money, given his movie and TV projects, and endorsements. However, DA is also known to be frugal. At any rate, purchasing pirated DVDs is such a turn off. Is patronizing such products, the only “fake” purchases DA makes?

"Price is rarely the most important thing. A cheap product might sell some units. Somebody gets it home and they feel great when they pay the money, but then they get it home and use it and the joy is gone." – Tim Cook

Away from the Crowd

“Out of sight, out of mind” is somewhat an apt description of the careers of network talents. Being in between projects could be a double-edged sword. First, not being visible on TV could dampen the interest of the fans, and therefore the fans might shift interest. The other risk is that not being seen as often can lead a talent not to be as conscious of his/her physique. With very few talents really regaining their following after they emerge from a hiatus with a new project, interest should always be maintained to keep their popularity.

Perhaps without wanting to, fun-loving actor (FL) recently found himself in a series of controversies involving different women. In one incident, he was in the midst of the tension between a past and a present relationship. In  another, he got the ire of a seasoned actress. In both incidents, FL was the victor.

While these controversies became the favorite topic of the showbiz press, FL was seen holing up in a hotel south of the capital. This relatively new hotel within the metro is far from the center of showbiz happenings. FL was spotted checking in for the weekend. As to who was with FL during that weekend is as important as the reason why he was there in the first place. Was FL evading or waiting for someone? What do you think?

Revealing Thoughts of Talent Manager Towards the Actress

Sometime ago, talent manager (TM) shocked the production people of a talk show where she was a major guest. During the break, TM was in the dressing room freshening up when she was overheard speaking to someone over the phone.

TM was assumed to be talking to someone asking if one of her talents (OT) could play the villainess role opposite non-singer actress (NA). Although nothing that TM does could still shock people, her feisty reply caught the attention of people nearby. TM began calmly, and then burst into “What? You expect OT to play contravida to NA??? P****g i***g yun!” Then, in a more peeved tone, TM said, “OT has been with your network for some time, and you still cannot give her the stardom she deserves!”

Come to think of it, OT has indeed been with the network for a time ever since she left her original stable. OT has tried doing the range of roles, and even tried following the steps of a sibling by posing in a magazine. Still, she has been relegated to doing supporting roles, and usually she does play a good villain. Meanwhile, NA has been known to have turned down a role that practically made the career of another actress (AA) a household name. At that time, NA was supposed to star with a franchise actor (FA) of the network. NA turned down that role because she said she was prioritizing her studies. Because of that, AA and FA rose to fame, and AA now miles ahead in celebrity status than NA.

We can only speculate why TM labelled NA that way. Was it because NA seems to be having successive relationships? While maintaining her good girl image, the latest is that NA is now happily involved with a scion of a famous showbiz clan.

Perhaps, OT can learn a thing or two from respected American actor, Sidney Poitier, “A good deed here, a good deed there, a good thought here, a good comment there, all added up to my career in one way or another.”

Threat to the Production Leads to Removal?

During a studio tour, visitors got a good view of how things were run in a network. Perhaps the success of this network is in the independence of its program departments that are segregated based on the genre. On that day, the visitors noticed that the point person (PP) of the comedy group (CG) seemed to be a bit irate. However, being a professional, PP toured the group and gave a glimpse of the responsibilities that go with the work.

The mobile phone of PP rang, and apparently, PP was informed of a minor problem with the audience during the taping of a comedy show. One of the audience raised a dirty finger, which the camera captured. PP sighed with relief as that part could be edited. Of course, PP had to be careful as the network would not want a repeat of the nonchalant cursing of a studio audience in their live show.

After a while, the phone rang again. This time, the tour group saw how PP got more irate. One of the staff called PP to inform the head that virile actor (VA) threatened not to show up in the taping of his comedy show if his drama series will not be returned to its original time slot. PP had to call VA and explain to him that the decision of the drama department is not within PP’s powers. PP had to beg VA to stay with the comedy show, but based on her reaction, VA seemed to be adamant to leave the comedy show if his condition will not be granted.

Then, PP blurted out, to the shock of the tour group, “Well, if you do not want to return to the show, fine! I’ll just look for your replacement!”

Now, does VA think he is really that important to the network? VA already did a few actions that made viewers and netizens uncomfortable and turned off recently. Of course, his network did not have an official statement regarding his stunts, and it was assumed that management was cool about them. Incidentally, the comedy show has garnered awards, commendable ratings, and an indefinite run, while his drama series is also garnering ratings but has a more definite period for running.

As we ask if VA will make good on his threat, he was missed in the last episode, and a quick check on the wikipage of the comedy show has interesting information – the absence of VA in the current cast list. Moreover, his drama series is still on a later time.

The once invincible golfer, Tiger Woods, seems to have learned that “money and fame made me believe I was entitled. I was wrong and foolish.” Will VA ever learn?

It Pays to Keep Your Cool

Every election campaign season is a test of patience and endurance both for the candidates and the electorate as well. The candidates to survive the agonizing rigors of the campaign trail, and the electorate to endure the kind of candidates' profiles thrown at them – those that they see and hear on television, radio, and in social media every minute of their waking hours.

Candidates make sure no stones are unturned to be able to get that much-coveted seat. All that dancing, singing, “smiling like idiots” (to quote from Sen. Miriam Santiago) are clear manifestations as to the extent these candidates will go through for those very precious votes. Needless to say, the bottomless cash that keep changing hands from the top one up there to the lowliest kid on the street.
If only for these, elections are definitely more fun (and more funds) in the Philippines.

If you have insufficient cash and connections, it will be very hard to keep up with the game. That is why candidates take years to prepare and strategize. Strategizing will not only need money, but tons of patience as well. Veterans or newbies alike, candidates need a lot of exposure in all areas of media – print, radio, tv, social networks. Constant and relevant media exposure is battle half-won.

At a taping for a new network program for election candidates, a Political Reelectionist couldn’t hide his disgust and impatience after having been made to wait for his turn to be interviewed on the program. He was complaining about the long wait and wanted to be put on cue right away. Program staff had already explained to him that such couldn’t be accommodated since it was on a “first come-first served “ basis. But PR wouldn’t hear of it and without any warning, he walked out of the show -- still ranting non-stop.

All candidates go through a lot of sacrifices. Yet this early, PR wants to feel special. Wonder why he had to behave that way. Hasn't his years of battle to win a struggle not taught him that patience is indeed a virtue?

"I grew up with six brothers. That's how I learned to dance - waiting for the bathroom.” ~ Bob Hope
