Joe Jonas Heats Up Manila

Hollywood heartthrob Joe Jonas arrived in Manila last May 22 as the newest international endorser for Philippine clothing brand Bench. Joe joins the ranks of international celebrities Bruno Mars, David Archuleta, Michael Trevino and Lucy Hale who are also members of the Bench family. Popularly known as the lead vocalist of pop-rock band the Jonas Brothers, Joe also starred in the hit Disney movie "Camp Rock" and reality shows "Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream" and "JONAS". Late last year, Joe shed his teen image and transformed into a mature solo artist with the debut of his album Fastlife. The album was inspired by coming of age, enjoying new things in life and learning to take risks.

One of the first things that Joe did when he arrived in Manila was shop at the Bench store in Glorietta 5. He loved the shirts and accessories and personally hand picked items that he'd like to wear. A huge crowd of fans gathered outside the store to get a glimpse of the star. Armed with cameras and creative signages sporting love messages; they cheered for Joe who warmly waved while flashing his signature killer smile.

When asked about how he felt about being a member of the Bench family Joe Jonas said "It's been great and the people from Bench have been very kind and warm." He proudly said that among his favorites were the brand's shirts and polos. To a question on how many marriage proposals he's gotten so far, he blushed and said that if he accepted them all he'd be married a lot of times. The press conference ended with a meet and greet where members of the press and lucky fans were able to have their photo taken with Joe.

Fans were in for a treat as Joe spent the remainder of his stay in the Philippines by visiting Bench stores in Glorietta 5, TriNoma and Cebu in line with his mall tour arranged by the Ayala Malls.

Requesting A Deeper Sense of Understanding

Some years ago, character actress (CA) was diagnosed with severe depression. It was so that she had to rest temporarily from her commitments. Depression seemed to be farthest from the time she began her career. CA was launched as a teenage entertainer and within a short time, she became part of one of the most successful love teams in the industry. However, her beginnings came with controversy. Her schoolmates could not believe that she was being passed off as a 16-year old, while they were all in their early twenties. Nonetheless, the public and her fans didn't care because CA evolved from being a sing-and-dance star to one serious enough to portray daring roles. Soon, the industry discovered she could really act. And in no time, CA started getting meaty roles in substantial movies and telenovelas.

But the circumstances in her family life contributed to her depression. When she got married, her earnest desire was to have a child as soon as possible. However, she and her husband had to wait really long for the conception, then when it became positive for the first time, it had to be extinguished because of a miscarriage. Months after she lost the baby, she was seen with two dolls. Some people speculated she has gone over the edge because she was treating the dolls like real babies. They had names, and she would bring them along wherever she was. Still, others sympathized with her and respected her choice of coping in that manner. A year later, CA got pregnant and gave birth. Everyone was happy because finally she and her husband's earnest desire was granted. Sadly, the baby boy lived only a few days and died after. CA tried to cope with the worst situation she could ever have. She rested and decided that their lives had to go on.

That was almost seven years ago. Fast forward to recent months, CA portrayed a major character in a hit telenovela, and critics and viewers noticed the depth in her portrayal. At the onset of the series, CA would always be on time for her tapings, and would send home-cooked meals to the set. The crew appreciated the professionalism of CA. But again, her friends began to fear for her, that CA might be showing signs of depression again.

A few weeks ago, word came out that her character would be killed in the series. This news surprised several people because the series was to last until the third quarter of this year. The reason for her having to bow out of her series was her becoming sickly of late, which CA confirmed later in media. What was unsaid was that CA had been having difficulty in her lines, and was taking three to four takes per scene. Lately, the crew noticed CA was tagging her doll along and talking to it every so often. CA would even sing lullabies to and change the diapers of the baby. This was the very pattern she showed when she had her first miscarriage.

At this point, CA needs understanding. Other than links to her past trauma, no one knows for sure what is triggering her bouts with her latest depression.

Just a Possible Reconciliation

While statuesque beauty (SB) gave left and right interviews regarding her recent break up, her ex-boyfriend (XF) kept quiet and did not say any word. XF was once again criticized for how easily he breaks up with a flame. Sometime in the past, a talented performer (TP) got the shock of her life when she was asked how she felt about her break up with XF. TP was surprised because at that moment, she thought she and XF were still together. XF had not even said anything to her. Then, she had to learn it the hard way, via a question from a reporter. Hence, people were not surprised when SB said it was over between her and XF. Half the reports blamed the break up on how allegedly domineering SB was and how the family of XF did not like her at all.

However, while people were glued to their TV sets during the Pacquiao and Bradley fight, SB was in the comforts of XF’s home enjoying the fight. SB spent the whole day with the family of XF. According to sources, SB and XF seem to be closer again. People who know of this new development smell the reconciliation is in the offing. Hopefully, they are right. Everyone loves a happy ending, especially in the case of this odd couple.

Appalling and Quaint Move of the Singer

During the US Tour of a group of singers, the audience was appalled at the behavior of audacious singer (AS). The concert consisted of winners from the talent shows of the network, and most of the Filipinos in the audience watched these talents evolve from shy contestants into the celebrities that they are now. AS was discovered in a singing contest. The network developed her from a copycat of a semi-retired belter (SB), who is still a concert queen in her own right, to one of the next important singers of the country. In fact, the network even gambled on her, and the risk paid off as her first movie ran in cinemas for three weeks.

The audience had a wonderful time watching the performances of the grand winners of the academy (S1) and the talent contest (S2 and S3). The performers sang oldies but goodies, R&B, jukebox hits, etc. Then came the turn of AS. She told the audience that if her network had an advocacy for the welfare of the child, her advocacy was for the building of her house. The parallelism was funny at first. Then, AS produced containers and passed them around. She asked the audience for small bills. Of course, the people were shocked at such display of bad taste. After her singing, AS followed up on the containers, and the viewers soon realized she was serious. The crowd was dismayed because they paid good money to watch the talents perform in their city, and the ill manner of AS ruined the show.

Since the talents were on tour, did AS ask money in each of their concert venues? Does her network know and tolerate her actions? Indeed, her behavior creates a bad impression of her network. Does her act imply that she is not properly compensated by the network? What makes it worse is that AS showed her seeming lack of decorum while on performance abroad.

This young performer (YP) grew up performing before the public. From innocent lass, who merely wanted to win in a contest, YP is now one of the most sought after singers in the country. In fact, YP even has non-Filipino fans abroad. As a performer, YP can fill up a venue because the audience knows she can deliver. She has proven her impact, both in the movies and endorsements. Amidst all her achievements, YP has remained simple in her ways, her attitude, and her views. Despite the wealth, she keeps a very low profile and hardly flaunts her possessions.

By a twist of fate, someone close (SC) to YP got wind of information that YP is actually being short-changed in her talent fees. For example, the talent fee of YP as stipulated in her contract is allegedly much higher than the payment she's been getting. Thus, if for an endorsement, YP receives around 5M, the real contract says it's 10M. However, the real contract with the real figures is never shown to YP. Another contract that states a lesser amount is the one that is shown to YP, and signed in public. SC discovered the possible anomaly when she got to talk to an insider of a production (IP). When the fee of YP cropped up, SC was surprised at the huge discrepancy in the figures.

Of course, SC wanted to act immediately on the injustice but it placed SC in a dilemma. If SC starts claiming that the contracts are rigged, then the career of YP might be ruined by an orchestrated barrage of negative publicity. After all, the one in charge of paying YP has the machinery to make or break any career. Another sad thing is that the company of IP fears that once it questions the existence of two contracts, some of its talents might be pulled out., and these talents are the prized performers of the company.

Now, will SC assert what is due YP? Will they just keep quiet and not dare rock the boat?

Amplifying the Cinema Appearance

Versatile performer (VP) surprised everyone when she gave word she was going on a month-long break. Speculations cropped up regarding her status. First, people thought she was pregnant. Second, she was getting married abroad. Third, VP was merely tired and needed a break to rejuvenate. Fourth, she was becoming uncomfortable in her daily show and wanted space. A few days after her announcement, a twit circulated that VP was going to do a movie abroad. Confirmation came a few more days later.

The home studio of VP is currently playing up the story that she will be doing a movie in the United States, in no less than Hollywood itself. Hollywood connotes someone has gone big time in his/her career. Hence, this piece of news is a big deal in the career of VP. However, the movie she will be doing has low budget, and the film is an independent one. Her management cannot help but smile at the effort of the network in exaggerating the appearance of VP.

Incidentally, VP even surprised her own management with this Hollywood film assignment. She just showed her plane ticket. Eventually, her management allowed her to leave because the bosses felt that if they did not allow, VP might refuse to work. After all, VP is the hottest talent of her management these days and they cannot afford to lose her.

Embittered Behavior of the Diva

When the heavyset diva (HD) agreed to join a low budget musical, the production was elated because someone of HD’s calibre can add value to the show. Although HD does not have as many fans, she is a well-respected performer, and certainly can bring in an audience. But unfortunately, the production people were disappointed at the attitude of HD. They felt that HD should not be as demanding as she knew from the start that the production was running on a limited budget. The other performers who had international exposure did not show any qualms unlike HD.

First, HD complained about how she did not like the food served to them. Wanting to please her, the staff bought her food. When the food was served, HD said she already had someone buy the food she liked. Second, the stage manager got peeved when the road manager of HD insisted on implementing their own stage direction. The SM instructed her to enter at stage right but the RM said HD preferred entering from the left side. Then, HD asked why she was made to wait in the wings. It was explained to her that the performer on stage still had a couple of songs left before her turn. Third, the RM and HD insisted they handle their own playback. The crew could not argue and gave in to their request. HD went onstage and sang but the playback was wrong. Finally, HD left even before the finale number without saying goodbye to the production team.

These incidents earned HD a new monicker among the production, “balyenang mal-edukada,” which fits her whale-sized attitude.
