  1. Very well said, tita Lea. Haaayyy

    1. English is already the universal language.

However, I think correcting someone is offensive though lalo na at stranger yong tao, so dapat huwag na lang.

      Delete
    3. I don't get why people say they are discouraged when corrected.

      Delete
    4. It's all about HOW you correct the other person.

    5. @5:04 kasi balat sibuyas majority ng mga pilipino

    6. Madalas kse nanlalait iba.

    7. 6:27, I am not against correction, may iba lang talaga na mga mayayabang ang dating kung magturo, to the point above the boundary na ang pagiging know it all. Im sure you also felt it.

  3. Kahit saan naman na like in the US, Canada due to text messaging, social media, famous celebrities and rap artists

    Y’all
    Kweeeeen
    Cash me ousside

    From The Weeknd lyrics:
You are not the single type
So baby, this the perfect time
I'm just trying to get you high
    And faded off this touch

But that song was an instant hit

People don’t read much books nowadays, too

      Delete
    2. That's the sad part. People don't read books as much kaya you get a lot of stupid ppl who don't make sense.

    4. Hmm.

      Delete
    5. 2:15am grabe naman. Wala ba proofreader or editor yan books na yan kaya wrong grammar? Self publication ba?

      Delete
Also, sa English class di na din yata nirerequire ang mga bata na magbasa ng classics & mag critique ng book - something that we were required to do back then.

  4. I remember back in the early 80s (my earliest memories), tv news was spoken in english (remember Harry Gasser), they spoke mix english and tagalog at student canteen, there were a lot of american shows on local tv. Even late night shows were spoken in english. Little by little, evening news was changed to tagalog. Today, from the first tv show in the morning until the last tv show at night, it is all spoken in tagalog. These scenario together with the deteriorating educatonal system has led to the deterioration of english among Filipinos. I remember my old people back then, they have only graduate from grade school but they can converse in straight english. I blame the media and the educational system.

      Delete

    3. I agree with you @12:54

Pag bata ka pa lang alam mo na, it will stick with you til you grow old. Yung iba nakakaenglish pero sablat sa grammar.

    6. I miss that time when there were lots of English shows to choose from & news was delivered in English (my favorite newscaster was Cathy Santillan). You really have to subscribe to cable channels to watch English shows.
At 7:35, the kind of mentality you have is exactly why the English skills and also the conversation skills of Pinoys are deteriorating. Instead of contributing to a healthy discussion, mag-cocomment ka ng walang kabuluhan.

      Delete
    7. Super agree! Late night shows, like Martin After Dark and Edu Manzano show aliw din kahit taglish. My Dad would also force me to read Reader’s Digest and Nancy Drew books. And I do the same now with my kids. All our books were from book sale and hand me downs from relatives. Invest in learning thru reading.

Let’s not waste our time with a garbage like 7:35 :)

      Delete

    1. So if you cant conversate in full English, why bother. Lalo na if ang kaharap mo ay been living in a country that English ang primary language. Mapapahiya lang. Madalas kasi tinitingnan ang appearance.

      Delete
    2. I beg to disagree; I work in SG now and the ones I’m working with are at least bilingual and are very good in English. I would agree di sila kagalingan but those who are degree holders are very good in English. I work in a multinational company btw so I have colleagues who come from other parts of the world.
Also, we cannot expect Asian countries like Japan and China to be very good in English simply because their language is completely different. Tagalog words use alphabets while Chinese & Japanese words have its own distinct characters and they don’t even start learning English until the later years of their primary education.

    3. Kaso japan is a first world country meaning cla pinupuntahan ng mga investors, ng mga manggagawa unlike sa pinas na third world meaning cla ang dumadayo abroad so kailangan talaga marunong mag-ingles kundi pano ka makakapag-work ng maayos.

      Delete
Hindi fair na icompare ang english skills sa pilipinas at japan dahil english is not a major subject sa curriculum nila and their textbooks are not in english. Maybe we could say na ang pag deteriorate ng english skills ng mga students sa pilipinas eh equivalent sa pagdeteriorate ng math or science skills ng mga students sa japan, when their education is supposedly heavily focused on those subjects. As far as I remember, lahat ng subjects sa atin with the exception of social studies and filipino are taught in english, so kung may decline nga sa english skills ng mga estudyante, eh there must be an effect on how they learn other subjects as well.

      Delete
    5. Unfortunately, work ethics is what most Pinoy workers lack.

    3. 2.03am

actually, being fluent in another language is a sign of intelligence

  11. It’s always a plus if you know how to speak the English language since it really is the universal langauage. Ang akin lang bilang Pinoy let us not be ashamed to speak our own language too. Kailangan balanse lang.

    1. You're so right 2:17. And may I say even the English-speaking people aren't perfect - spelling or grammar. So let's not be so critical to those non-English speaking people. For as long as we are able to deliver our message that's it!

  12. As someone who lives here in Dubai, and have read the Philstar article, here are things that I can say:

    1. If you have actually taken a cab here, it's just far from possibility that you'll be impressed on how good the drivers can speak English here. There's nothing wrong with that -- as long as you get to point A to B, but I can confidently say that most Filipinos that can do better.

    2. Most of the Filipinos that work/get hired here are in the restaurant/hospitality and other service related industries -- and that's because they converse really well in English in this culturally diverse city.

    3. Not saying that the study made by the firm is inaccurate, but mention how the point system was measured. Not because some other nation tested better in a grammar exam, would eventually make them good speakers. You have to factor enunciation, among other things

    ReplyDelete
  13. Agree. I grew up reading Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Bobbsey Twins and later evolved to some really good authors like Pat Conroy, Pearl S. Buck. Noong High school kami ng mga barkada ko borrowed books among each other.

    1. Maybe something to do with a person’s mentality?
If one refuses to learn, how do you expect him/her to improve?

    2. Agreed.

Actually, 3 years in preschool, 6 yrs in gradeschool, 4 yrs of HS, and 4 yrs in college. Take note, almost all college subjects are in English except Filipino and maybe Rizal. We are still taught English even outside the formal english classes in college. 17 years. What reason do other people have to not have it as a second language?

  22. Point fingers at the students! Knowing English is an essential job skill if they want to work for a good company or work in other countries. If they don’t want to learn, it is their choice. But I don’t pity them and their poor me sob stories.

  23. I think english grammar is as simple as familiarizing rules on subject-verb-ageement...

  26. Sows naman. In convo English, sound like a convo English. If it's a novel, write a novelish level English. If it's a dimplomatic memos then write the same. Dami nyong kuda.
