Repost: Duterte's Anti-drug Campaign on the Cover of TIME Magazine

A man whose face is wrapped in packaging tape is featured prominently on the cover of the Asia edition of TIME Magazine's September 26 issue.

The magazine puts a focus on the "tragic cost" on the anti-drug campaign led by President Rodrigo Duterte, who graced the cover in May as "The Punisher."

In the September issue, the grim image is accompanied by the caption "Night Falls On the Philippines." Writer Rishi Iyengar details the trajectory of the so-called war on drugs in the cover story.

Iyengar documents the death of Restituto Castro, who was shot in the back of the head after an alleged drug run for his friends.

"According to figures provided to TIME by the Philippine national police, 1,506 people had been killed in police operations as of Sept. 14, just over two months since Duterte took office," Iyengar wrote.

"The rest were likely killed by vigilantes who may have been inspired by Duterte’s words—deaths the authorities say they are investigating."

Meanwhile, Duterte's habitual use of profanities was also given attention, citing the "nauna" rape joke from the campaign trail and the recent remarks he made about US President Barack Obama after he was pressed about the issue of human rights.

"I don’t care about human rights, believe me. There is no due process in my mouth," Iyengar quoted Duterte, describing him "unapologetic" towards the end.

Iyengar also shares the perspective of some police officers: "This is the first time that the President or the administration are really focused on eradicating illegal drugs. The support of the President makes it very encouraging for the law enforcer."

Beyond the 1,506 individuals who died in police operations, Iyengar added that nearly 700,000 people with drug-related offenses have surrendered out of fear.

The tone of Iyengar's story on TIME Magazine is similar to front page stories that the New York Times ran in August.

Featured in the first New York Times story was photo of a woman cradling the body of her partner Michael Siaron, a 29-year-old pedicab driver whose death at the hands of unidentified gunmen gained wide attention.

Another story, published in New York Times-Asia two weeks after the first, focused on the the death Renato Bertes and his son JP, who were reportedly tortured in a Pasay City jail. — Aya Tantiangco/VVP, GMA News

That's what they did to Iran which they admit pero never sila nag-apologize and it's NOT in the news.

He will say something , then next day, he will apologize, contradict what he just said, or his press people will cover up for him. What kind of a president is he. He hates America and UN, is coddling China who's been been bullying us and where almost all our drugs are coming from,
and woud like to deal with Russia. He is insane. He is clearly leaning on the communist side. I hope he doesn't finish his term for the sake of the Filipino people.

And if the price for sticking only to what's true is having this lying, low-hitting, murdering man as president, eh ganun talaga. That is the fate 16 million gullible, hate-mongering Filipinos brought us. We're all in this together and now we suffer with you. But at least, we suffer with our dignities intact.

  6. Tragic? It's more of a tragedy when media, news outlets, who are supposed to be balanced and fair in imparting news and info are obviously biased and are "twisting the truth" as they see it fit.

The president does not conform as to what is expected for a veteran politician who geta elected to the highest post of the land. No sweet talks, brash, vulgar, swears like a sailor. However, words are meaningless no matter how sincere is the one uttering them, when there are no acts to follow through. It would still be results that would matter.

And this corpse who was wrapped in packing tape was not the first in Philippines. Dead bodies tapes were there way, way back. I've seen one in 2003, partly burnt. By the highway going to Cabanatuan NE. But wrapped corpses are common in South America. They are not however in Time cover, are they? Were they? And if they were, did they focus in any of the presidents in South America?

Before pointing fingers to the highest leaders, it would be more prudent to look at different angles. The most likely explanation though is that those who were involved in drug pushing are killing each other be it the same members of a group or cartel, or those from rival factions or mafias eg Sinaloa, etc.

    8. I agree with 1:34. For you 4:11, the president gave the drug addicts and drug pushers the chance to redeem themselves by surrendering. Hindi naman basta lang nag sabi si Duterte na patayin agad ang mga adik at pusher na maeencounter ng mga pulis. Binigyan sila ng chance, and they did not comply.

      Delete
    10. your ignorance 8:40 is overwhelming. the president has no right to declare and or to pinpoint who are guilty of drug violations without due process! let the proper courts decide it so that the supposed accused of being drug addicts or pushers can defend themselves. i could not wait for you to become a victim of mistaken identity.

      Delete
    12. it seems dat you did not understand what ive said 11:19. drug problem is not among my priorities since every country experience it and it is impossible to eradicate it. my concern is due process and let the proper courts decide who is guilty at hindi ang panginoon nyo. anyway, wait till you are wrongly accused and you will plead due process. by that time magtatanda ang mga katulad mo

      Delete
  7. God bless the philippines!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Madali kasi mapagbintangan. That's why there's this thing called due process. How sure are we na totoong may kasalanan yung napapatay? Kaya ito nakakatakot kasi with this gungho style, pati INOSENTE pwede madamay.

Easy to say "wala akong ginagawang masama bat ako matatakot."

But when you are the one accused of something and you KNOW you did not do anything wrong... how you'd wish the system will give you a fair trial, ano?

Human rights is not about protecting criminals. That one person is considered innocent until proven guilty is to ensure that no innocent person suffers wrongly. The system may be imperfect but putting the law in the hands of one man is even more dangerous.

And do not accuse human rights advocates as not doing anything for the victims because darling while you are hating a good number of hr advocates have been devoting their time precisely to cater to victims, too.

Please read up on check and balance. And basic stuff pertaining to the three CO-EQUAL branches of the government. P Diggy may be prez but he still has to follow the rules.

Lastly... stop telling people "kayo kaya ang maging presidente" because the people have the right to voice out their concerns. Real power comes from the people. These elected officials only derive their power from the people. Winning doesnt now mean that the people have been stripped off their voices.

  39. The most honest and real evaluation of a certain President's performance and a certain Country's Real condition is the one that comes from the mouth of the Majority of that certain Country's Citizens. The English speaking world have been made to believe that living in the so called 'communist run' mainland China is like living in hell until the whole world have realized the rapid increase of that country's middle class status citisens and eventually of that country overranking the US as the the biggest economy in the world. The Philippines hasn't been in good terms regarding its diplomatic relationship with mainland China, and China has been very vocal on its aggressive ways on taking over territories which it believes to be a part of it premise just like what it did to the entire country of Tibet. Now, if the President Duterte would not exert any extra effort in reaching out to mainland China and strengthen its diplomatic relationship to the country even more, or else, our country is in for a Real chaos ( War ). The President Duterte is doing things for a good reason and purpose and we, the Filipino citizens, who are living in the Philippines, who understand the syntax of our diversed languages, and who are Exposed in the Real situation of our country in the past up until now in the present should be the ones to be considered and believed as the most Reliable Sources of Evaluation and News.

DUE PROCESS - That is the main reason why up until now, the Ampatuan massacre hasn't been decided yet. Its a nobrainer for everyone here in the Philippimes who the culprits are and yet they have NOT been Convicted yet after more than 7 years of Trial or Due Process.

    I have a question:

What would a criminal use kung manlalaban siya sa isang pulis na may baril?

    Malamang Baril Din hindi ba?

So its ethier mamamatay yung Pulis or yung Criminal!.

Huwag mung sasabihing Batuta ang dapat na dalhin ng mga pulis laban sa mga nanlalabang criminal?
