No Zika with Strike!

One article from a Korean newsletter reported that last April, a Korean who visited the Philippines from April 10 to April 14 was found out to be infected by the Zika virus. The health secretary of our country then confirmed that it was the third incident of Zika in our country. It is alarming because like dengue virus, Zika can do harm to our health. Although there are no cases of microcephaly, we must all be vigilant with these disease spreading mosquitoes by avoiding their presence and even preventing mosquitoes to live in our environment.

According to the World Health Organization, Zika virus is an infection that is caused by Aedes mosquito. The symptoms associated with Zika virus is mild fever, rash, conjunctivitis and muscle pain. These symptoms may be familiar to us because it’s almost the same as Dengue fever which petrifies us Filipinos as it can even lead to death. The infection has only developed no serious threats in general, however, it is seen to harm pregnant women who are infected with the virus as they can pass it to their unborn child. Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected as well when they feed on a person who is already infected with the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also advised the avoidance of intimate contact with a man exposed or sick from Zika virus and when you have Zika symptoms, it is best to visit a physician right away. But prevention is better than cure so always be mindful with your surroundings and to the very least, start with your home.
