Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago is now in the intensive care unit of the Makati Medical Center since Tuesday night, May 31, due to "complication," according to her husband Narciso Santiago Jr.

In a statement sent to media on Wednesday, June 1, Mr Santiago said the senator was "rushed by ambulance" to the hospital on Monday.

It was not clear why the veteran senator was brought to the hospital. But the husband only said she is "sick and suffered complication."

She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2014, but later said she had been cured. Recently she revealed she is suffering from anorexia (inability to eat), a side-effect of her medication.

In the statement, Mr Santiago advised the public "that visitors are not allowed" and that gifts, such as flowers and other blooms" will not be accepted.

He, however, assured the public that his wife "is bearing well with her trademark sense of humor."

"Miriam said that she thanks all her family, friends, supporters, fans, and others who helped pray for her recovery and sent their well-wishes on Facebook," he said in the statement.

Santiago ran for president in the 2016 elections but lost. She rarely had sorties due to her illness. She even skipped the second presidential debate to undergo clinical trial of an anti-cancer drug.

On Tuesday, May 24, the outgoing senator wrote Senate President Franklin Drilon, informing him that she “shall continue on medical leave for cancer.” – Rappler.com

    4. May rason naman kaya hindi nanalo sa 3rd attempt. It's due na rin sa health condition niya.

    7. 2:32, her husband was actually the one who asked BBM to run as Senator Miriam's VP and not the other way around. Nakakuda ka dito, pwede mo sigurong i-search 'yun to get your facts straight.

    8. She stood by with BBM and natouch ako sa ginawa niya. She defended and fought with him until the elections and counting was over. Maraming maraming salamat po Sen. Miriam.

Love and prayers, BBM SUPPORTERS 🙏🏼

    2. 2:17 Na sad din ako, pero I think blessing in disguise na rin that she lost in the election dahil she NEEDS rest para maka recover sya and she also needs to spend more time with her family and loved ones. I really admire Sen. Miriam for everything she's done to the country. She has made a mark as an Ilongga.

  16. Sa'n na yung nagsasabing matatalino kuno dahil sila'y bumoto daw sa "most qualified president we never had" na ang dinahilan ng tao ay ang sakit niya kaya di siya binoto? Magsilabas kaau mga feeling intellectuals! If she had not had cancer, she would've won my vote, but sad to say she has cancer and isn't yet cancer free. Ano kayo ngayon? Nagmamarunong kasi eh.

    1. Buster, you don't know what tomorrow brings you. Some cancer patients recover and get treated. Some healthy people just drop dead. There's no doubting with her capabilities, she really is the best. She should have been given the chance, never mind that she may not finish her term. Because a human who is actually facing death is more inclined to accomplish more. Last hurrah, legacy to leave, how to be remembered.

    2. 3.16 get real will you, lung cancer is one of the worst cancer you can recover from. Imagine if she had she won the election, our country would be in a right mess now with a very sick president who can barely breathe let alone run a government and a VP who might change depending on the result of electoral protest. All we can do now is pray for Miriam and her family.

  24. The very reason why I didn't vote her. Just imagine what would have happened if she won. Our country will be in limbo. VP seat is still questionable and the yellow pawn has been declared officially.
