Letter from a Reader: Liceo de Cagayan University Students Clean Third Floor Classroom Windows

Image courtesy of Fashion PULIS reader

Dear FashionPulis,

Yesterday (March 13, 2015), I sent my daughters to school (Liceo de Cagayan University) and after making sure that they are inside their respective class rooms, I took a trip to the comfort room. When I was about to exit the comfort room, I noticed students shouting something from the outside. Right there and then, I stepped outside (the comfort room has an exit that leads to the back of the building) to check what was happening, and to my surprise, I saw students on the third floor cleaning their classroom. If you can see the photos, the students are standing on a very unsafe ledge. I think even construction workers need to wear harness for this kind of job. These students are young and naive and they do not realize how dangerous this can be.

This school is rather prestigious here in Cagayan de Oro. I do not think the parents are aware that the lives of their children are in danger while they are in school. I am sure they all think that their children's teachers are taking good care of them.

My question to this school is why are the students allowed to even go outside? This photo was taken around nine in the morning when classes were ongoing, and again I ask, where are their teachers? We do not pay more than PhP 40,000 a year just to put the lives of our children in danger!

Yours truly,
Cris Dina

    1. I am a Kagay-anon. Unfortunately for the letter sender, I have to refute the "prestigious" claim. Liceo is anything but prestigious. You end up in Liceo because Ateneo de Cagayan does not want you. Period. You graduate from Liceo even if you can barely weave an elementary sentence and ang kawawang mga parents think theyre paying prime money for their kids futures.

    7. Anon 3:07am: opinion ko lang po pero ang pinag-uusapan dito is the safety of the school children not whether the school is prestigious or not. The mere fact the A parent could send their child/children to school whether they are paying above or below P40k is an achievement so let them say that they are sending their kids to a "prestigious" school coz not everyone could afford or even send their kids to any school for the matter.

      Delete
    8. Anon 3:07, this has nothing to do with being prestigious or not, this has to do with parents paying tuition to send their children to school to learn and to NOT clean windows period!! This should be investigated! I am a parent and seing this makes me furious! what if something happens to my child, who's going to be responsible??!!

      Delete
    9. Your point is not relevant. The concern here is about safety.

    10. "Ateneo de Cagayan does not want you"? Ha! As if students are clamoring to sign up for that school, or any school in Cagayan for that matter.

    11. what's the issue here, ung safety ng students or pagiging prestigious ng school?

      Delete
    12. The issue here is not about prestige. Who cares if the school is prestigious or not! The issue here is ensuring the protection of the students against danger. Just look at the photos, and that's where the focus of the argument should be.

      Delete
    13. Anon 3:07, tumpak! Liceo is not prestigious at all. For lack of a better word, tambakan jan. There sre rumors that round the city that you can pass a subject by paying the teacher.

    18. 3:07 i did not know that if one is studying in ateneo, he/she will have have a "so much pride" kind of attitude that will look down other people.(which the way you comment shows).

    20. where's the bitterness coming from anon 1043? Maybe you didn't pass your CSAT/ATCU/OLGSAT no? Kaloka. The issue here is the safety of those children, bakit nagkagulo lahat sa "prestigious"? Pakiexplain!

    21. Ok fine sa prestigious factor. But i will not pay 40k just to see my kid cleaning windows sa delikadong sitwasyon.

    22. Nakita naman siguro ni 3:07 yung ginawang points ng letter sender which are:

Wala siyang sinabing mali, unless prestigious talaga yung school

    26. Liceo is not a prestigious school. It's a private school but the students are cleaning their classrooms like public school do. Also there is no academic freedom and freedom of speech in liceo. Students are trained like robots and not as an individual person.

      Delete

Honestly speaking also not bragging, but I'm a student of Ateneo de Cagayan. Studying in Liceo doesn't mean ADC doesn't want you... It could be the destination, which is ADC in this particular topics, might be far from where they live or they just wanted to go to school to Liceo. People have their own options, a lot of people really look at Ateneo de Cagayan this way which makes a lot of us uncomfortable, so please don't. Liceo is indeed a prestigious school, I've heard some good news from them. ADC itself has some bad sides involving major issues, so don't just go assuming, which in this case looks so. Also your point, is a bit out of topic.

    5. I am thankful and I prefer that the parents reveal this to the media also. Other parents need to be aware of the dangers their children face in their schools.

    6. sana nag-reach out muna sa authorities. as a parent, you could have stopped the act since nandun kana naman sa site.

      Delete
    7. Don't be too naive.

    5. Pinapag varnish pa nga kami ng chairs in the exclusive school I attended for a long time. Okay lang yun, pati maglinis, pero in an unsafe environment such as that ledge, unacceptable talaga yan.

      Delete
And please, dont judge the school by how dirty the window is , Liceo de Cagayan University excelled in many various fields and produces products that are equiped with its core values.

But instead, you had a moment of great epiphany in the CR about the amount of tutition you are paying. Your questions about why they are there will not be answered by commenters here, and could have been better addressed by the admin of Liceo.

    1. The school has janitors and maintenance. This kind of case should not include the school but instead the students. The school has rules and regulations and the students didn't abide with that rules. Maybe not blame anyone or any school with this case but instead, do something rather than posting in social media. You are not caring for the safety, you're bringing down an institution. Just saying, no bad feelings.

  15. I went to a public school and was remember my parents paid for a penny. We usually had cleaners everyday and yes we do some chores inside school, we've had a third floor too and the teachers does not want us to clean those area but rather janitors of the school for safety reasons.

34. OA naman nitong Chris Dina. I see nothing wrong with assigning cleaners. It builds character. Children should be taught to clean after themselves. This could be an isolated case. I studied a short course in German language in Liceo. Okay naman ang school. They keep winning in interschool competitions against the so called more sosyal schools. Napansin ko when i was there na halos mapuno ang harapan ng highschool campus ng tarps because they keep winning in competitions. My cousin is also taking up Pharmacy there and another one graduated many years ago from the College of Physical Therapy. It's pretty expensive.
