Mind your Acting, Don’t Be Very Dumb!

Anyone who enters showbiz and dreams to make it big must do his/her homework. For the most part, they should learn about the business so they will know what to expect. Show business with all its glamour and perks is and never will be a walk in the park. Therefore, like a soldier gearing up for war, a newcomer must be well–armed and must possess certain attributes for survival: determination, flexibility, reliability, punctuality, versatility, passion.

Meticulous preparation, like a good workshop is a must if you don’t want to be eaten whole in a scene by your more experienced co-star.

Most of all, learn from your colleagues, especially the veterans who were there before you. Smart newcomers strike friendship with them knowing that they would benefit a lot from their wisdom.

Amateur Star AS is cast in a television series along with a Veteran Actress VA where their respective roles require them to have frequent scenes together. VA who is an awarded actress has an intimidating personality, known to be brutally frank.

After weeks of taping, it occurred to VA that AS has not been showing any improvement at all - could not deliver her lines without making mistakes, an indication that she's not been preparing well. Apart from that, AS’ acting leaves a lot to be desired, requiring too many takes … something that pisses off VA big time, especially when she learned that AS is not exactly greenhorn having already done a series or two earlier.

One taping day, it was the same scenario between VA and PS – unmemorized lines and acting flaws. The delay was already getting on VA’s nerves. Until she could no longer take it and decided to drop the bomb on PS. In typical VA fashion, she told her, “ Hey girl, know what? You better prepare before you come for taping. Practice acting well. Remember, you are doing a scene with me! “

It must have been too embarrassing for AS to be subjected that way in public - she cried unabashedly.

But this thing maybe a blessing in disguise. If AS is wise enough, she may yet be a better actress as a consequence of those hurts.
