I watched the pilot episode of "Marian" in hopes that this could be the project that could label Marian as a multimedia star. But to my dismay, it was just a disappointment. I share the same sentiment with some people who say that if the show continues to be that boring, it will not last. There was really nothing new and interesting about it. The presence of Vilma Santos and Maricel Soriano just added to the glitter, but there was really nothing in there.
First off, I'm not a Marian fan but I believe that she can carry a whole show. Some may argue with me but I think Marian has the talent, the charm and the wit. But sadly the pilot episode was a bore.
If it's not too much, I'd like to share some points which I think that Marian and the creative team of the show may want to consider:
1. Make Marian talk
If she can handle the Juan for All segment in Eat Bulaga which is live and impromptu, she can handle the mini-talk show segment in her own show. I suggest that the staff research more about their guests and give Marian and co-host Paulo Ballesteros guide questions or have a mini-game with the guests.Then, of course Marian can inject her humor here and there. I am sure that with Marian's ability to express her opinions, the mini talk show will be more interesting.
One of the reasons why Ryzza Mae Show is a hit and fun to watch is because the host acts as the "host" of the show. Marian should 'own' her show, take control and drive it!
2. Social Media
Hello? What generation is this? This is the era of social media. Thus, the show can explore many possibilities. The staff should be in tune with what is up in this day and age. For example, search for a good dancer in youtube and feature him in the show. Or have an interactive segment where Marian will answer some questions from the netizens. Or have a request segment where Marian will dance the request of the netizen. That way, the viewers will be more involved.
Again, the Ryzza Mae Show is very relatable because of its reinforcement in social media. Ryzza has instagram account where she posts the photos of her guests is such a creative and effective way of putting relevance to the show.
3. Have a "heart-tugging" segment
Marian is into charities. She has "Puhunan ni YanYan" in Eat Bulaga, she is a Red Cross volunteer and she helps a lot of cancer patients. The show can showcase that side of Marian. She can do something like a "Wish Ko Lang" segment. For sure, this will make the show not just interesting but also socially relevant.
Even Vice Ganda's comedy talk show like Gandang Gabi Vice has this segment. Pinoy viewers are easily touched seeing stars help out and the truth is, that strategy truly sells. Ever wonder why Eat Bulaga lasted this long? I'm not saying Marian should go to the barangays, but I'm very sure they can inject an "Awww" segment in her show.
If you imagine all these happening in Marian, she could be a true multimedia star - host, dancer, a true entertainer with a heart. Isn't that the image they want Marian to project? The show can possibly attain the longevity of shows like The Sharon Cuneta Show (TSCS), Vilma! or even Sarah G Live! Her management just has to bring out the best in her. Anyway GMA should really invest in her, the truth is, Marian Rivera is one of the few real "stars" that GMA 7 is lucky to have.

ReplyDeleteOk all ur suggestions I think was there in bits and pieces...i was expecting more from the dance routines. Sndami ng magagaling na dancers that I was expecting more. Her dance numbers are just so-so. Can they make a more spectacular production where it will not become another ASAP, only its an anemic variety?
ReplyDeleteI agree. I'm a fan of Marian pero yung dance steps na ipinapakita niya halos lahat me similarity...yung paggiling ng balakang niya...na kung minsan hindi dapat kasama sa choreography. Saka kung gusto nila na medyo retro ang sayaw or merong isang uri ng sayaw na gusto nilang ipakita...dapat yung talagang steps ng sayaw ang dapat nilang ipakita.

In general boring ang "Marian" show but I hope mag-improve ito. Sayang si Marian! Sana mag-research pa ng husto yung nasa Creative Dept. ng palabas niya.
Lol natawa ako nung kpop segment ni hindi nila masundan yung buong choreography eh kasama yun kung bakit gusto ng mga bagets ang kpop performances...sana d nalang nila sinayaw lol. I was expecting Marian to dance well pero I was pretty disappointed. Walang kwenta yung performance. Tbh nagkataon ko lang napanuod yung segment na yan when I turned the tv on na curious lang ako. Eh spiel palang sablay na. Napaka generic and corny. Ayun nilipitan ko agad after.

ReplyDeleteGood point. I actually liked Marian and could be tagged as one of her Fans but not like the others who would bash other stars just to lift her up. Anyways, even as a fan I cant get that drive to watch her all through out the show. Its just that, its boring. And I cant waste 30 minutes just staring at her face. I need to see something that will make me stay home every saturday night. The same drive celebrity bluff is giving me. :)

DeleteGood suggestion. Actually kung gusto sya i-tag as a multiperformer she should at least do well kahit dancing. I was expecting her to do well. But idk the choreo was bad. Should we blame the choreographer? Or inayon lang nya choreo sa level ni Marian. Sana i-push nalang sya where her strengths lie instead of pinipilit sya sa something she's not really good at. Instead of being really good at one thing, everything seems half baked. Well except for EB, GMA isn't really good at producing variety shows anyway. Bka dapat yun muna ayusin.

This is one of the major reasons why a show flops: close-mindedness. Being creative is being open to ideas, suggestions and comments. Even the best TV shows had their critiques, so don't defend the show like it's really CLOSE TO PERFECTION. I agree with this open letter, Marian is one of the few genuine stars that KaH has so they should let her shine with the right kind of sky and clouds.

DeleteI agree with no 1. If you saw the second episode, it has a bit of improvement. The main guest was Michael V, who as we all know is multi talented, it will be a challenge even intimidating to interview him but Marian did well.

3. The "heart tugging" segment. Unlike Vice Ganda's show which is a talkshow, Marian is a Dance show, for me, it is unimaginable to insert a drama for the sake of ratings.
Having said all that, improvements have to be done to the show, not on Marian but more on the stage set up, Louie Ignacio should stop that glaring light effects that hurt the audience's eyes.

She spent 30 minutes watching this show so she is entitled to write her opinion about it. If as you say she should just watch the shows that meet her high expectations then this show just lost one viewer. I don't think this show can lose any more viewers lol, so the production team really needs to step up.

DeleteI am a marian fan but i do really agree to this. Marian has the talent pero the team behind the show must think strategically how to entertain the viewers. Another thing is i find her moves the same though she can dance gracefully. They should hire gforce na turuan xa ng mga bagong moves.

Hindi naman kailangang gumamit ng maaanghang na salita o manlait para ma-prove ang point. Maganda rin kung may civility and respect lalo na para sa mga artists or subject ng story. Marami rin naman silang matututunan sa mga comments natin. Yun ang kailangan ng lipunang Pilipino ngayon, paggalang at pagkakaisa at pagtutulungan para tulungang makaangat ang lahat. At malaki ang kinalaman nating netizens para mangyari ito. Sa atin mismo dapat magsimula, sa indibidwal na pagbabago ng bawat isa. Saludo ako sa iyo Leah.

ReplyDeleteSuper agree! I watched the pilot episode and find it okay. the 2nd episode though was really boring. I love Marian and I really think that she is very talented and charismatic. It's just sad that GMA is not giving her the right materials and projects. Ang husay niya kaya sa Eat Bulaga! Sana nga mag-improve naman ang Marian show!

At kung pipilitin nila sya sa sandamakmak na production number pwede ba kumuha sila ng matinong choreographer at saka pag praktisin nila si Marian at mga dancers nya. If its supposed to be primarily a dance show...then the dance performances shouldnt be so-so.

Isa pa pala FP. Wala na ba ibang director na kaya ang isang musical o dance show? Napakaluma ng style ni Louie Ignacio. NapakaParty Pilipinas pati ng dating. Sinasayang nila ang charm ni Marian sa mga tao dahil nakakabore nga talaga. :(

Pangalawa, Louie Ignacio, naku umay much na ang concept nya na ala perya at 80s. Sayang talaga si Marian, kung maghandle lang si ignacio at eugenio. Dapat mag invest naman ang gma.

DeleteSana marian can do a formal dance training. May potential sya to be a really good dancer. It's a dance show so ini-expect ng mga tao na maganda, maayos yung mga performances kaso obvious na madalian lang. Marian could do better if she's really serious with her craft.

DeleteLol daming butthurt na fans ni Marian ah, di matake kahit constructive criticism na positive naman ang pagka-relay. Puro "edi wag ka manuod" parang ang kikitid ng utak ayaw nyo ba mag improve yung show? Kaya ba ng fans nya na dalhin ang ratings ng show nya? Eh kahit ibang fans nya dismayado eh. Sana po isipin nyo na yung mga suggestion para sa ikabubuti ng show para kahit hindi fan ni Marian wala nang masasabing bad about the show. Yung ibang tao kasi nakakapanuod ng magandang performance kaya medyo may standards na sila. Kung kayo masaya na dyan eh di papano pa mag iimprove si Marian as a performer? Kung dance show yan dapat galingan nya talaga sumayaw hindi yung pwede na lang. Well in this case mukhang creative/production issue ito. GMA should take note kasi kahit sinong superstar kuno nila gagawan ng show kung hindi talaga maganda ang production values, mga jeje nalang talaga ang manunuod kasi satisified na ang low standards nila.

Deletei watched her when she was a guest at one of the KrisTV episodes. The episode/s featured restaurants and it showed that side of Marian, a foodie. The suggestions of Ms Leah seems to be well thought of and she meant well. I have not watched any Marian teleserye. My only claim to "knowing" her is that YT clip with her co star where the costar leaped like a kungfu master. I don't know how the TPTB in her network look at her beyond that body and face. Maybe sometimes there is something wrong with how she talks but at KrisTV. she seemed to make sense. Oh well, of course, those are edited. The point is if she can show this side of her on KrisTV, by all means, look beyond the body and the face of this girl. If it's how she talks, by all means, train/coach her, Unless, of course, Marian, herself thinks that there is nothing more to learn.

ReplyDeleteThe show is a work in progress but it shows Marian really can dance and do interviews! After 3 consecutive awards in 2 months and being the world's only 3 time FHM sexiest, well, Marian is the hottest superstar today.
Add nyo pa dyan yung international fanbase nya.

ReplyDeleteI love Marian and I will support her TV shows, movies, product endorsements, etc. I was worried about the criticisms that she will get especially from the 2nd episode which I think was so mediocre. Marian can dance, that is for sure but if you have Geleen Eugenio as choreographer, that would be a bit disappointing, I wish the production gets a better, "younger" choreographer. 2nd episode pa lang naman, may 11 episodes pa that they could improve on.

If they have the money to spend for Queen Marian, dapat pang reyna din ang ginawa nilang show! nag research muna dapat, what's IN & HOT sa dance scene. Hire the best Choreo & dancers in town or better yet, a great foreign Choreo to teach them. Plus, change the director. Get a good one that can execute well, which will make the audience feel that they are in a dance club.
