The city council joined Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres in calling for the boycott of the iconic Beverly Hills hotel owned by the anti-gay sultanate of Brunei

The Beverly Hills council has joined Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres incondemning the government of Southeast Asian sultanate Brunei, which owns the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel and has passed new laws targeting gays and woman.

Brunei’s leader Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah introduced harsh anti-gay penalties last week that will eventually include death by stoning for homosexuality and adultery. The government owns the Beverly Hills hotel, which has seen the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Tom Cruise and Ozzy Osbourne and is a celebrated part of Los Angeles life.

The Beverly Hills City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night urging the government of Brunei to divest itself of the Beverly Hills Hotel and other properties in the area, the Los AngelesTimes reports.

The council was divided, however, on whether to boycott the hotel, the BBC reports, which employs 600 people, and pays about $7 million in bed taxes and $4 million in city taxes annually.

“They won’t stop the implementation of the new laws,” Christopher Cowdray, the hotel group’s chief executive said of the boycotts and protest but rather would “only hurt the [hotel’s] employees.” Cowdray added that Brunei had no plans to sell the hotels.

well, an open-mind, an ear that listens, and a sensitive heart are indeed priceless attributes, so they cannot be possessed even by the most powerful and wealthy people of this planet.

  6. I love that Hollywood is making a stand kuno pero I wish they'd apply it to all nations who're vehemently opposed to gay people. Why not Russia? Why not the Arab nations in the middle east? Why not the African nations? Why not the Philippines, specifically the CBCP? Sabagay hindi naman sila required to make a stand and we should be thankful na they're sending a message of support, pero yun kasi ang hahanashin ng naysayers eh--na bakit Brunei lang ang tinatarget nila.

  9. I worked in the biggest hotel in Brunei which is The Empire Hotel & Country Club owned by Brunei government for 4 years. Every Friday sultan Bolkia will do the horseback riding behind the hotel with only 2 guards and an ambulance following him. He always wear yellow shirt which is the color for the royals there. Two of our Bruneian male staff transferred to defense as soldiers for better salary. This is true, his name is Sumanto but the fact he is gay, he was accepted. He used to visit us at times, at palagi pa namin syang binibiro, oh natuto ka na bang maging tunay na lalaki.. sagot nya, sila ang natutong mag make up sakin. Gays are abundant in Brunei Kung isasabatas nila ito maraming mababato sa locals doon.

Karespe-respeto ang gobyerno nila kasi meron talaga Political will.
