Collector Pays P1.3 M for Fake High-end Bags

MANILA, Philippines - A 21-year-old businesswoman, who collects designer bags, has filed charges against an online reseller who sold her two fake Hermes Birkin bags, for which she paid more than P1.3 million.

“It was only when I decided to re-sell them that I found out they were fake,” she told The STAR in an interview yesterday.

The woman agreed to talk on condition of anonymity. She also asked that the online reseller, whom she charged with estafa before the National Bureau of Investigation, not be named. The two parties are set to meet tomorrow at the NBI headquarters.

The complainant said she only wants her money back.

“Everyone we consulted, even the Hermes store here, told us the bags were fake,” the woman said.
She said she found the reseller through Instagram in November 2012 and bought a bubblegum pink Birkin (a rare color, according to her) for P660,000 and an orange Birkin for P690,000.

The two bags were delivered to her in January but she had kept them in their boxes and never checked them until she decided to sell the bags after she gave birth later that month.

When her elder sister took the bags to a prospective buyer, she was told they were fake.

Collectors
The two sisters had been collecting bags over the past five years and have about 100 pieces, most of them by well-known designers.

The elder sister said the deal made by the complainant, which she did not know about, seemed a good one since the two Birkin bags she bought were really rare.

“We could get those from the Hermes store (in Greenbelt) but the waiting time is about two years,” the elder sister said.

The complainant said when she told the reseller that the bags were fake, the reseller referred her to a “Birkin expert.” The reseller “told us she would return my money if that person would say the bags were fake. But when he did say they were not authentic, she still refused to give me a refund,” the woman said.

The expert told her to go the Hermes store in Greenbelt to have the bags checked. “We were told by the store manager that the official authentication from France would come in after about three months since we would have to send the bags there. But the manager said that based on just the paper bags, the boxes and the feel of the leather, the bags were fake,” the complainant said.

Why would you spend that much money for a bag named Hermes, why not buy it directly from the store. Even if you have to wait for eternity. if it's rare. what make you think that you're the chosen one to be the first, to have one, among, billions, and billions of people, who are definitely richer, and have connections to purchase it first before you. To think you just live in the Philippines for crying out loud. Lastly why do you have to broadcast your stupidity for us to read. When it's your greediness and lack of judgement that placed you in that situation. it's your problem go solve it yourself quietly.

Panindigan mo!

  36. As a collector, I get a different thrill out of buying outside of retail outlets. It's advantageous for several reasons such as immediate availability (vs wait list and OOS) of rare or models with limited production. It's not always cheaper but it happens too so I won't be too harsh on the sisters for buying outside of an official retail outlet. What I find unacceptable though is their carelessness. It's not a matter of having the money to buy something. It's the whole process of learning every possible detail you can about the items you collect, it's history and even the future direction the company is taking your collection too. It goes without saying that identifying fake or replicas is part of the skill a collector acquires. As a collector you always have the money to buy for what you collect - ie if your budget is limited, you save for it or forego purchasing something else. So I don't understand the letter sender beyond sowing what she reaps. If you plant stupidity, you reap its rewards.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Before I buy a designer bag from a friend, it's my condition that I first have it checked to the bag's corresponding store here. This is to make sure that I'mgoing to have my money's worth. There's no shame to do that.

  51. the alibi or apologia the plaintiff presented in her lodged complaint is in no way a credible one as the claims she/they (she & her sister) made are ridden with inconsistencies & pseudo-facts. for instance, her claim that she wanted to buy an Hermes that sports a rare shade (rarer than most Hermes merchandise out there in the market, that is) is obviously a pathetic attempt to save face from the disgrace that she's become after having been made a f**l by the online seller. for starters, as one smart comment in this thread stated earlier, Hermes bags, especially the ones that come in rare colors, do not come cheap and often, just one of these would cost a million or several millions. boy, these designer-bag-collectors thought they got a steal, a huge bargain. unfortunately, it was the two of them in the end who got stolen from and "nadugasan". poetic justice indeed. moreover, if as they say they are serious collectors of designer bags and hand bags as they

  52. I honestly don't understand the point of spending over $20k JUST for one bag. Yes, the materials that were used to make these are beautiful and the goods are very well-made but you can find an excellently made bag similarly, if not much better, to these designer bags for a lot cheaper. Even if I win the lottery, you would never find me in a LV or Hèrmes or Gucci or Coach stores. I find their products overrated and ugly. I'm not rich but my mom is and she once asked me if I wanted an LV speedy bag for my birthday but I said no. Instead, I chose a nice custom-made leather bag for 1/6th the cost of that certain LV. I feel like people only buy these expensive designer bags just so they can show them off.. or show their money off. I don't want to walk around Lower Manhattan with an LV bag. I'd rather have people come up to me and ask me, "Hey, I like your bag. Where'd you buy it?" compared to having the LV bag that's already everywhere and which you have no way of telling if it's a knockoff from afar.
