Letter from a Reader: A Cockroach in My Salad

Dear Fashion PULIS,

Last July 10 at around 10 in the evening, I invited my friend, Noel, to eat in this restaurant in Greenbelt. In the restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly receptionist and one of the managers who know me. I browsed through the menu and ended up ordering the Inasalata Rucola.

When my salad arrived, I started eating it. After digging into it, I saw something that was blackish in color. I handed my phone to my friend and told him to take a picture. I requested the waiter to call the manager to show him the cockroach in my salad.

They offered to replace my salad but how can you still continue eating in a restaurant when you just saw an insect in your place. There was no apology or anything and they only offered to give me free dessert. I insisted to pay for the bill but they declined my payment. That night, I felt cheated because all these years I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant the incident made me realized how unclean this restaurant is.

A worm in the salad is understandable because sometimes during the preparation it cannot be spotted but having a cockroach in it is totally a different story. I think the Makati City sanitation department  should look into this restaurant. We should not tolerate the unclean kitchen of this restaurant.

The next time you guys are in the Greenbelt area, you better think twice before entering this restaurant. Thank you for posting my story.

Regards,
Marcelo Alonso

  12. aw i like this resto, too. We had a similar experience with a different restaurant in katipunan. (Clue: kubong nagbebenta ng pizza). The waiter just whispered to his fellow waiter and then replaced the meal. However, he didn't alert his manager. We still had to pay for the meal. I got scared since there's a possibility that the resto is infested with cockroaches and I vowed never to come back to that resto again. They didn't even apologize.

Months ago, my friends and I decided to try flying pig in eastwood. We ordered the platter which consists of ribs, chicken and sausages. I chewed something hard from the sausage. After I spitted it out, I found out it wasn't a bone, but a piece of glass. Then I reported it to their staff. They were very apologetic and told us not to pay the 2k+ bill anymore. They even offered to give us a new set of the platter but we were already full. Instead, they offered us free desserts (cheesecake and lava cake).

  19. I am not in any way related to this restaurant but this kind of incidents do happen even if you try all your best to sanitize everything. Restos in the malls have scheduled fumigation.

I think the restaurant lacked one thing which is uttering the word "sorry" but they did the proper thing which is to not ask for payment.

The letter sender is just a spoiled brat who lives in a "perfect" world. Hello! We are in a 3rd world country. Also, he should have said everything he wanted to the resto..lahat na ng sama ng loob and to all his friends narin if he wants to pero ipa press release pa here is just plain ridiculous. If dinedma sya nung resto sige ipaalam sa lahat pero may naaksyonan naman nung resto diba?

  20. In fairness to the restaurant, it really is hard to maintain a super clean kitchen. I ran a restaurant years back, and no matter how hard you clean before, during and at the end of a day's shift, these critters are just drawn to the smell of food. The most you can do really is maintain a regular pest extermination program, and vigilance when preparing the food. I know, I know it's practically inexcusable for the customer, but sometimes, no matter how hard the restaurant staff try, sometimes some of these bugs escape their attention. The reality is that Manila is a very dirty, vermin-ridden place, moreso these commercial areas where food and trash attract these pests. Short of hermetically sealing the kitchen, there's really no 100% way to keep out pests. They sometimes come in through cracks in the walls of the restaurant, or sometimes hiding within the produce that has been delivered.

This was a long comment, but just wanted to share with you the realities of the restaurant business. Believe me that probably 99.99% of the time, these incidents are just purely accidental and not reflective of unsanitary conditions in the kitchen. We are all only human after all, and sometimes slip-ups do happen. All we can do as restaurateurs are to apologize profusely, drill our staff, and keep a tighter lid on our safety and sanitary practices. Just saying :)

  26. my friends and i had a similar experience in a restaurant at the glorietta. we found a foreign looking dead whole spider in our salad! it was black and about 2 centimeters. the waiter and the manager even insisted that it probably crawled from the plants next to us (but they were plastic in pots). i told them i watched as we were eating it and no insect could have dropped from the ceiling.so it came from their kitchen. the staff insisted that their greens were cut mechanically but they can't argue because the spider stared back.

we were kind and did not make a scene at that 2nd floor expensive pizza and pasta place though we vowed never to eat there again. as a postscript, their lawyer (who turned out to be a friend of a friend) and i exchanged polite emails (so, i have a paper trail of the incident). i reiterated the need for better measures in their kitchen. i took photos, actually, before a waiter insisted on changing our plates.

  27. OMG may serious sanitary issues talaga tong resto na to! Dined here, as in exact same branch, a few years back, and guess what we saw - A FAT BLACK RAT ON THE LOOSE! We told the waiters but they didnt do anything! Probably bcos kami lang ang nakakita that time and they didnt wanna scare the other customers. Eventually, nakita din ng iba pero ang weird dahil dedma lang ung mga katabi namin tables. Nawalan na kami ng gana so we paid for our food and left right away! Never na kami kumain ulit dito kahit sa iba pang branches!

  29. My brother worked for Rentokill and the job required them to do inspections before doing actual pest control most of their clients are buildings & restos he was assigned in the makati/fort area and I heard alot of stories about kitchens being infested by bugs as well as unsanitary practices. One particular resto didn't have proper working stations that the chef had to put uncooked food on top a basurahan, that's just so unacceptable. We also ate at this Chinese resto in libis to our surprise may cockroach na nakatago sa veggies ng patatim my brother literally threw up when he saw this. The health/sanitation department of every city should take these issues seriously cuz were paying for food & services so at least we should be assured that our health & safety is given priority!

  30. This is, without a doubt, I (GB2 branch). My family WAS a loyal customer too - until a live roach crawled out of our bread basket (which was halfway empty). I was so surprised I almost caused a scene when I jumped out of my chair. The manager apologized and gave us free bread loaf (ermmm... seriously, bread?) for the trouble. We immediately paid and left in disgust. Will not be going back there (or any of its branches) EVER.

First, trinoma.. they had hair in the breading of the chicken fingers. how cool is that??? next, robinsons place, i ordered the ribs and yes.. i saw hair again in the sauce... another.. cockroach in their icedtea.

  38. The direct owners of the restaurant should be aware of this so that they can properly address the situation and do something about it. I agree with the previous comments the branch did something about it at hindi yung pinabayaan lang yung client pero SANA nag-apologize at lumapit man lang yung branch manager. Of course, di na siya babalik for sure kahit naman ako e madadala pag may nangyaring ganun pero that will not keep me from eating in that resto (sa ibang branch siguro, oo).

Maybe this happens naman talaga. Minsan yung iba hindi natin nakikita (what u don't know won't hurt you) as in eeww di ba? Pero tama yung reader sa previous comment na it's hard to keep a place 100% pest free. Kahit sa mga bahay natin, no matter how hard we try to be clean, chances are na meron pa ding nagtatago sa sulok sulok. Of course, it's not an excuse. They should be extra careful kasi people trust them and they have a reputation to take care of. Management should be wary of this, kasi if people will continue to complain e mawawalan sila ng clients. Years ago, may incident sa isang mall na may na-food poison daw. They closed the said establishment for checking and reopened days after. Then after that, people came flocking in as if nothing happened. The owners did something para to assure clients na hindi na mangyayari yung ganun.

Siguro palakasin natin mga resistensiya natin laban sa mga ganitong insidente hehehe. Seriously speaking, if we cannot be sure of what we are eating at least di ba sa mga sarili natin sure tayo through proper food handling at home.

So Mr Contributor, kindly report din the incident to the proper authorities. Ok lang hindi mo na banggitin ang establishment pero at least di ba, you made a difference unlike others na walang ginawa.

I agree with what 'Anonymous July 27, 2011 8:29 AM'.

Sorry, but i beg to disagree with your comments.
First of all, this restaurant is not a fast-food type or carenderia-type of eating place. This is one of the 'posh' restaurants that we have in the country. With that said, they have exorbitant prices for anything that you order from their menu.
What you said that irked me is your line of reasoning that just because we are a 3rd world country, we should, in a way, be more accepting of this kind of scenario. That is just plain ridiculous.
Patrons or even new clients should only expect the best customer service and the cleanest food that they can get from this restaurant. Anything below that is just inexcusable. The people paid a hefty amount of money to get the best from this restaurant and you see a cockroach in your salad? I don't know about you, but I would be fuming mad if this ever happened to me.
Being a 3rd world country is never a reason for this.
FYI. The cockroach is one of the filthiest insects in the world. Just crush one with a broom or a slipper, and you get what I mean. They are capable of crawling anywhere that includes your kitchen sink, your toilet bowl and sewers. Now, picture that being served in your salad plate.

  46. To those who are "just saying" this happens and insinuate that it's ok, I hope this happens to you the next time you dine out.

The more people think that such callousness in food safety is normal and at any degree acceptable, then the more lax these establishments and inspections will be.

  54. to anonymous July 27, 2011 3:34 PM.

we manage to control pests in our home. it's all about dedication to keeping your place clean and sanitized.

    here's a tip:

cockroaches become immune to pesticides and disinfectants in a matter of time, so better switch brands from time to time to make sure they're not exposed to the same formula. an oil called citromint also does the trick. use it when cleaning your house and cockroaches and pests wont come in your premises.

  55. yuuuuck!! i knew it was "I" resto... and to think their dishes are OVERPRICED and servings SO small...

a while back, i got severe amoebiasis (while i was pregnant pa) and had to be hospitalized. i was suspecting the caesar salad i'd eaten from this resto to be the culprit. with this incident, my suspicion is indeed confirmed.

  57. There was a time when we ate a popular Chinese Fast Food Place. The Sweet and Sour Pork had a very sharp plastic piece inside it. We notified the manager about it. but she did not offer any apology or offered anything free. If i had the bad luck of swallowing that piece of plastic i might not be here right now typing.

Another incident this time involved another Chain serving Tapa. The rice served with the Tapa had a short curly hair! We all know that short curly hair will either come from the underarms or way down there. Again, no apologies were said, they just replaced the meal with the same meal. I reported this to the Main Office, but i did not get any response. When i did go back to the same branch, i noticed that there were now careful with cleanliness, the plastic and fork were covered in plastic, everyone was wearing hair nets etc.

  63. Naku mamahalin pa naman yang resto na iyan. I think nasa management talaga yan ng resto. My friend worked for a mall and meron talagang identified na ng mga restos na madudumi at meron yung malilinis.

Kadiri story FP!

  70. That's why it's best to eat at home where you know how the food was prepared. I also had a bad experience in a Japanese Restaurant where the mouse went back and forth getting sashimi from the buffet. Eversince that time, I preferred eating at home. Nakakawalang gana to see a mouse freely getting food from the buffet table.

  71. I can only say one word for this: YUCK!

I share the same sentiments with Anonymous 2:10PM. There's no valid excuse for infestation when it comes to food preparation. It's like saying na okay lang na ma-food poison kayo since the Metro's knowingly dirty anyway.

Just to also let everyone know: be careful when using drinking straws from restaurants. I usually don't use straws unless it's clear (not the typical red/colored ones) or if it was given to me packed in a plastic.

Straws are commonly infested with cockroach dung/eggs. Especially yung sa mga fastfood. Kaya everytime I need to use a drinking straw, I see to it first that I peek inside kung may mga dumi dumi sa loob before I use them. Hindi lang sa pagkain nangyayari ang infestation. Even the utensils of restos are affected.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!! SO. Kung may ipis sa bahay MO, KAKAININ MO DIN BA?? Makakita ka ng IPIS sa pagkain mo in a fairly expensive restaurant, kakainin mo nalang ba kasi hindi ka "freeloader" at anyway, may IPIS naman kayo sa bahay? Tao ka ba??

In my house, WALANG IPIS, WALANG LANGGAM, WALANG DAGA. WHY? Because we CLEAN our house inside out. Even when we used to live in a condo, our condo NEVER had any of these...and i am NOT exaggerating. It all boils down to CLEANLINESS. Ngayon. Kung ikaw, hindi ka malinis sa bahay mo, I'm pretty sure, you will NOT understand why people here are appalled or "nadidiri" with what happened to the unfortunate customer.

The same thing happened to me, a few years back, in their Shangri-la mall branch. I ordered the appetizer sampler (pikilia) and there was a worm in the eggplant. I complained to the manager, who did not even bother to apologize. Instead, he even justified the presence of the worm because according to him, their vegetables are fresh. He even included the appetizer on my bill. I had to call his attention and demanded that he exclude the item from my bill. I wrote the management about the incident but they never responded.
On another occasion, my sister ate at their Greenbelt branch and saw a big fat rat fall off the ceiling and into one of customer's table. No apologies were heard.

but it seems that their quality has deteriorated na. sa cubao, last time we ate there, hindi talaga kami nasiyahan. para kang kumain sa shakey's lang. and i heard from someone, when she ate at the moa branch, she was convinced that the meat smelled rotten.

as regards the cockroach, it is too common to have cockroaches in restaurants. in fact, i see it often sa isang fastfood sa pedro gil wing ng robinson's place. surely, there are too in binondo restaurants. in most instances, however, its brought about by improper sanitation. malamang lang sa hindi madumi talaga yung restaurant itself or the immediate vicinity.

kulang siguro or hindi maganda yung panglinis or disinfectant, or whatever.

July 27, 2011 10:19 PM

I know what resto you're referring to...me, my dad, my son, and my 2 brothers would usually go here for lunch or dinner. One time, we all went together at their Greenbelt branch. My dad ordered this salad (i don't remember the name) and got a sample of the WORM. And, like you said, the manager JUSTIFIED (without apologies) the WORM in the salad. Same LAME excuse - that their vegetables are FRESH...thus, the WORM. Wow ok ba? Diba pag nabubulok ang cheese may uod? Or anything na nabubulok for that matter, you see maggots? So san dyan ang "fresh" reason nila? And, pag may uod ba ang vegetable na bibilhin mo sa grocery, ibig ba sabihin non kailangan mo sya bilhin because it's soooo fresh, it has WORMS? Mind you, your branch was in Shang. Mine was in Greenbelt. Guess it's a STANDARD reply for managers huh...maybe they are TRAINED to say this!

Seriously, r u for real? It's one thing to have "ipis" at home, but to have it on ur food, especially if u pay exorbitant amount for it, is UTTERLY UNACCEPTABLE! bkit, kahit namn may ipis sa bahay, na try mo na ba makakain ng ipis sa bahay nyo? Jeez! Wat a stupid, moronic thing to say!

  89. Sad that we find these critters on overpriced food. Beyond cockroaches, mas hirap pag staple wire o bubog ang natapat sa yo. It doesn't just leave a bad taste in your mouth, sugat-sugat pa ngala-ngala mo :(

  90. Same thing happened to me in starry coffee place a couple of years ago. I was starting to enjoy my Iced Caramel Machiatto when I noticed a small cockroach trapped in the caramel drizzle. I immediately brought the drink back to the barista, who didn't even apologize but just replaced it. I was in a hurry so I couldn't complain, but a few days later I went back and talked to the manager in charge. Guess what he said?

"Marami po kasi talagang pests dito e."

WTF! Is that something you even tell a customer? Especially if you're an F&B establishment? Needless to say I relayed this story a lot of times then finally a friend of mine informed his cousin who worked for the company that owns the cafe. They called me to apologize but I made sure to give that incompetent manager a piece of my mind first. A few weeks later, they temporarily closed that branch for fumigation.

  96. I remember eating at a restaurant in the States. My chicken dish had a small plastic strip. I asked for the manager to verify if it's really plastic or some kind of an insect. When he got back to me, he confirmed that it's a plastic strip which was part of the meat packaging and offered to change my food. I told him that it's alright and he doesn't need to change it. He insisted and even told me: You did not order for plastic. And of course, he did not charge me for it. I hope this restaurant would do the same. If they don't mend their ways, they will close down in a few years time.

  97. it has been three months na since the incident, one thing i noticed in this country, we dont have strong consumer protection.
resto can get away with incident like this . they even threatening to sue for libel. what is the definition of libel?
libel is something misleading or false information. what happened that night is factual.no one can deny it except of course the resto itself. its like a fight between david and golliath. thanks to fashion pulis for supporting this cause. it is proper to let people know the kind of restaurant chain we have been supporting all these years. we know at the end of the day, its business but they should also consider taking care for our health.
they should practice what they preach" customer care"
