A Gorgeous Favor

Showbiz followers say that Talented Gay TG’s star status has made him quite a force when it comes to decision-making and inputs in all the shows and concerts that he is a part of.

TG reportedly has a say on major decisions, especially on the line-up of guests who would appear in his shows and concerts. First of, apart from talent and popularity, a potential guest must have rapport with TG among other considerations. A star’s popularity or fan base is a big factor for any concert producer.

But of late, TG has obviously succumbed to the call of the times. Allegedly, he okays even talent/popularity-challenged stars to guest on his concert as long as he can gel along with him/her. Business-wise, it is risky as it can boomerang on ticket sales knowing how picky most concert-goers are.

Heard from the grapevine that producers of TG’s concert overseas were dumbfounded when they saw the list of his concert entourage. Included in the line-up were 2 comedians which the producers haven’t even heard of themselves. And worse, on top of that is a newly-resurrected Hot Actor HA who has yet to step into any concert stage, as HA is not a performer – neither sings nor dances.

Producers were allegedly shocked and asked (verbatim), “Wala na bang iba?”

But TG reportedly defended his choices, especially HA. He said that HA was okay since he is only low budget, meaning not that big in talent fee. And that TG would take care of it even if HA can’t sing and dance. Allegedly, TG even declared that he was willing to give part of his (TG’s) talent fee just for HA to be in his guest line-up. How generous of him!

So there, HA must be one very lucky dude, as he is assured to win TG’s nod, perhaps for a sing and dance of his choice. Let the show begin!

A Clever Move to Keep Him

Celebrities are expected to look good every moment they appear on television or live in their performances. One factor that heightens the beauty of a celebrity is the makeup. Regardless of the natural look of a celebrity, using makeup appropriately definitely changes how he/she registers in front of the camera. For example, good lighting and proper makeup can create the illusion of a perfect nose. A gloomy mood can be hidden behind the layers of makeup as well. Therefore, the services of a very competent makeup artist can result in stiff competition among celebrities.

A few weeks ago, Makeup Artist (MU) was in the middle of a tug-o-war between Artistic Actress (AA) and Bankable Performer (BP). AA and BP have shows on the same day but on different stations. Hence, MU could only give his services to one. When AA found out that BP wanted the services of MU, she immediately said that she should be prioritized because they are friends and are close. When MU was not yet based in the country, one of his dreams was to work with AA. The dream came true, and thus, their close relationship.

Then, BP made a counter offer and said she would double the price of the services of MU. Too bad, AA said she would triple the cost of his services. Apparently, AA refused to be outdone by BP. AA believes she is still a much bigger star than BP; after all, she has been in the business much longer. Guess who won? Obviously, loyalty, friendship, and the highest bid (?) prevailed. BP had to avail of the services of another makeup artist, who is as well-known in the industry.

Incidentally, other than their desire for the services of MU, AA and BP share a few things in common. Both of them started in the same network. AA was one of the prized talents of the network before she transferred, whereas BP remains loyal to the same station. Then, AA and BP have had controversial relationships with their mothers. By contrast, the mother of AA kept a high profile throughout her career, whereas the mother of BP remained in the sidelights for many years. Currently, in terms of love, AA found her match and contentment, whereas BP still has to find peace and forgiveness.

I look for these qualities and characteristics in people. Honesty is number one, respect, and absolutely the third would have to be loyalty. - Summer Altice

I received a letter from a girl and I’d like to share just a small part of it with you: "Dear Lupita," it reads, "I think you’re really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me."

My heart bled a little when I read those words. I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me.

I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of a mirror because I wanted to see my fair face first. And every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I had been the day before. I tried to negotiate with God: I told him I would stop stealing sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted; I would listen to my mother's every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because He never listened.

And when I was a teenager my self-hate grew worse, as you can imagine happens with adolescence. My mother reminded me often that she thought that I was beautiful but that was no consolation: She’s my mother, of course she’s supposed to think I am beautiful. And then Alek Wek came on the international scene. A celebrated model, she was dark as night, she was on all of the runways and in every magazine and everyone was talking about how beautiful she was. Even Oprah called her beautiful and that made it a fact. I couldn’t believe that people were embracing a woman who looked so much like me as beautiful. My complexion had always been an obstacle to overcome and all of a sudden, Oprah was telling me it wasn’t. It was perplexing and I wanted to reject it because I had begun to enjoy the seduction of inadequacy. But a flower couldn’t help but bloom inside of me. When I saw Alek I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny. Now, I had a spring in my step because I felt more seen, more appreciated by the far away gatekeepers of beauty, but around me the preference for light skin prevailed. To the beholders that I thought mattered, I was still unbeautiful. And my mother again would say to me, "You can’t eat beauty. It doesn’t feed you." And these words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.

And what my mother meant when she said you can’t eat beauty was that you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul. It is what got Patsey in so much trouble with her master, but it is also what has kept her story alive to this day. We remember the beauty of her spirit even after the beauty of her body has faded away.

And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside. There is no shade to that beauty.

Her End of the Bargain

It used to be that Host and Model HM was the epitome of a principled young woman, full of conviction, making her one of the most influential young stars in showbiz.

The smart and down-to-earth HM may have been involved in some unsavory issues in the past but her demeanor and overall wholesome image often had her covered. The public knew well that inspite of her status, HM didn’t believe in compromises and showbiz politics. What she espoused and believed in were social issues, professionalism and work ethics – the stuff so rare in the industry.

Until few years ago when her career took a quick ascent making her one of the industry's in-demand endorsers. As such, she was often at work busy hitting the ground running, making hay while the sun shines, so to speak.

Due to her busyness, HM's regular show had its Producers PR been complaining about her habitual absences on the show. Reportedly, HM would not report on the show after a night of partying, something that made it difficult for PR who had already prepared the show's line-up for the day. Worse, HM had been going on frequent vacations making it hard for PR to schedule HM without any hitch.

HM may be a professional worker, but her many work issues had clearly impacted her image. So when the show reformatted, PR thought it would be the best to get rid of HM altogether. Not only was her schedule the problem, her many endorsements have been compromising her credibility a lot. Reportedly, HM's social media accounts look like a veritable marketplace of goods of various brands. Thus according to PR, she had to go.

The way HM has been conducting herself of late, close observers ask: Where is the HM of long ago? Has she already been eaten up by the system? Had she truly contradicted herself so bad?
