Flying Imperiously

Popularity
and power are synonymous. In showbiz, most especially, it's what
drives most celebrity wannabes to strive harder, apart from getting
their hands on shimmering pots of gold. And why wouldn't anybody yearn
for power? One can have and enjoy perks even without asking, or get away
with any mischief, big or small.
It seems that such is the line of thinking of a certain Brawny Mannequin BM. A beautiful import from South America, he and his kind were initially frowned upon by their local counterparts for their unwanted "invasion" of the industry. However, the tides have somewhat calmed recently as both parties have learned to coexist harmoniously. After all, the masses have also grown to embrace these statuesque half-breeds and their alleged cute broken English and Tagalog.
Now there wouldn't be any problem if BM and his tribe would reciprocate the hospitality and warmth given to them by the locals. On the surface, it may appear that BM does just that, constantly expressing in his social media accounts how much love, respect and gratitude he has for this country and its people. But a recent incident in a hot tourist spot best known for its beaches has proven all those sweet-talk to be contradictory.
BM attended a party with his friends a few hours before his flight back into the city. After much drinking and dancing, they got seriously baked. Everything seemed under control until he got to the airport, and sluggishly went through the checkpoint to the disapproving security personnels. BM was very quick to intimidate the security before they could say or do anything. Boarding the plane, the mischievous BM flashed his puppy-dog eyes to the obviously-smitten flight attendant, coquettishly making excuses for his rain-soaked ticket. He didn't stop his antics there, for upon getting in the plane, he gave the security personnels annoying gestures of arrogance, having one-upped them. BM was giggling the whole time.
We now wonder where all the love and respect BM claims to have for the Filipinos people had gone. If he was any wiser, he'd drop his princely attitude the next time around, lest he crosses the line with the authorities, exit the catwalk for good and board the plane to head home.

Sosy Kuripot vs Jeje Kuripot

Yet, even if it’s “easy money” in the biz, there are a lot of celebrities who can be very circumspect when it comes to their money. They run their finances much like a business, focusing on value for money. These people are known to be practical and money-savvy . Sometimes they are harshly labeled as frugal aka “kuripot.” However there are two kinds of kuripot, categorized in street parlance as:
SOSY kuripot - Days ago, Philippine Star's Ricky Lo came up with some names of stars who have made ample investments from their huge showbiz earnings.To name a few: Ogie Alcasid's restaurant, Sylvia Sanchez is into restaurants as well. Two of the biggest businessmen in showbiz are big names in investments as well, Manny Pacquiao and Willie Revillame. Both are mostly into properties and entertainment businesses.
These stars are finance-savvy and would put their lives in order rather than be financial fools spending and shopping with wild abandon. They would prioritize and make wise investments to secure their and their family’s future. Wise and smart, they are polite enough to turn down invitations that require big spending. They are mannered and will never be caught freeloading.
JEJE kuripot – Also called cheap, these stars take their practicality to the extremes, and overdoing it. They are moneyed, yet are very scared to spend. So long as their friends can tolerate them, some of them love to hang out with rich friends for the perks. These penny-pinchers who are habitual freeloaders are often avoided like a plague for their very annoying habit. For this article, let us have a rundown who among the present stars are known for being “jeje” kuripot:
Formerly Popular – this woman lives in style inspite of the lack of projects. She is notoriously known for not paying for her share during dinners. She would rather go hungry than buy food for herself until someone would be willing to foot the bill. FP has learned the smarter way to do it without the pressure: Dine only with rich and generous friends.
The Businessman – he has been rumored to be romantically involved with a lot of women, but none have prospered to properly call it a relationship, except with his present girl. Reportedly, the previous girls got so turned off when TB would invite them out on a dinner date but would make the girl pay for her share. Ewww. Unlike his elder who is so generous to his show’s staff and regularly buys them Starbucks coffee, TB would rather go to the gym to flex his muscles not his wallet after work.
Starstruck Politician – a cut above the rest of his peers, the educated SP will not be caught dead on a designer brands shopping spree. A shirt and jeans type of guy, SP once disappointed his then new girl when she egged him that they went inside a jewelry shop to try look for stuff she liked. The girl ended up empty-handed as SP could not be made to buy anything so expensive.
Recently Unpopular - a heartthrob for years, the very handsome RU made girls swoon and went gaga over him. Although he was a hardworker during his heyday and a fashionable dresser, RU was hardly known to buy anything expensive for anyone. Why wonder when he can’t even give tips to waiters?
Big Star – this astute giant of a star is a fastidious collector and has an extensive collection of the rarest stuff she is passionate about. She can be generous, but usually thinks hard before parting with any donation. While her big and less famous colleagues put their best fashionable wardrobe during movie shoots and television shows, BS always made do with wardrobe bought from Divisoria, saying that they looked so similar anyway, and that the fans and audience wouldn’t notice.
Media Couple - MC had a grand wedding years ago, with all the big names in politics, business and showbiz as guests and members of the entourage. The shrewd bride made sure that their wedding would be grand and big but would not cost them as much. How did she do it? It was indeed grand in terms of ex-deals, sponsorships and almost zero expenses on MC. What’s more, they pocketed a big sum from the returns of tv rights or coverage. The mother of freeloaders, indeed!!
Baby-faced Papa – even when he was still single, BP was known to be a tight wad. Some say, it runs in the family as his popular relative PR is known to milk anything for the money. Like PR, BP just loves bargains and only buys items on sale. He won’t be caught dead shelling out cash if he can have it for free. On the context of being nature lovers, even his children are reportedly discouraged from being techie-savvy just so he can avoid buying them gadgets. Oh, how will I forget the very sad Christmas story of BP’s driver, who was not only given any bonus, but was reportedly told that he should be thankful that the poor driver worked for him. But wait, there was a gift given to him after all – a t-shirt with BP’s name on it.
So there, being frugal is a choice - even if you choose to make a career of it and risk being called cheap or jeje kuripot.

Jaw-dropping Trip

DC has a forthcoming tv show which is something different, a deviation from her usual forte that she hasn’t done yet. During the negotiations for the new show NS, DC specified her demands, among them - she will have her own team to style her and do her makeup every episode taping. Her own team are all top names in their field, aka pricey - something that the production PR balked at because NS is no variety show that would merit a budget for DC’s big demands. In fact, DC knows that shows like NS runs on low budget and has short airtime only.
Unfortunately, DC who some people label as undeserved entitlement personified, has incurable desire to always look glam in any show, regardless of. Too bad for her this time – PR is not biting on her demands. DC has no choice but to push through with NS – whether she feels doll or dull.

Maja Salvador to Bashers: Wala akong Inagaw

Salvador earned some haters when actor Gerald Anderson admitted that they are in a relationship.
“Ang daming puwedeng sabihin, pero ayaw ko nang i-defend ang sarili ko o iklaro kung ano ang tingin ng tao sa akin. Majarot? Ahas? Isipin na lang nila 'yon. Pero sa akin, never akong naapektuhan dahil unang una, wala akong inagawan, at wala akong inagaw,” she said.
Anderson is the former boyfriend of actress Kim Chiu, Salvador’s erstwhile best friend.
In the July 2013 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine, Salvador said her bashers can say what they want to say but she will not waste time worrying over what others think of her.
Salvador said her decision not to talk about her rift with Chiu was because she still treasures the friendship that they had.
“Kung para sa kanya, hindi niya nakita ang foundation ng friendship namin, sa akin gusto ko makita niya na para sa akin, nandoon pa din. At the end of the day, gusto kong piliin ang maging kaibigan. She knows everything from the start,” she said.
Salvador said people should not put all the blame on her because Anderson and Chiu also had their share of mistakes.
“Aminin natin, aminin ko na. May mali ako, may mali si Kim, mali si Gerald. 'Yung sa akin, sige mali, dahil magkaibigan kami at ex niya. Si Ge, mali dahil alam niya magkaibigan kami tapos pumasok [siya sa eksena], at si Kim, dahil three years na nga [since naging sila],” she said.
While she doesn’t get affected by whatever her bashers say, Salvador said she is sad for her friendship with Chiu.
“Mahirap, masakit. Every day nakikita ko si Kim sa set. 'Yung dati mong kaibigan, stranger na ang turing sa 'yo. Pero kailangan mong tanggapin at intindihin,” she said.
Amid this trying time, Salvador said she just tries to hold her head up high and brave every controversy.
“Tumatakbo pa rin si Thelma sa loob ko. May mga bagay na pagiging matatag na lang ang puwede mong panghawakan, kasi kung wala 'yon, saan ka pupunta?” she said, referring to her role as a runner in the movie of the same name
The actress said she does not regret fighting for Anderson because the actor also did the same for her.
“Anong magagawa mo kung sabihin sa 'yo, ayaw niyang ihinto?” she asked.
“Ang ipaglaban ang pagmamahal na hindi mo naman alam [kung magwo-workout], that’s the bravest thing I ever did. Kung pinaninindigan ka naman, bakit hindi mo rin panindigan?” she added.
