Smart Unboxes Innovative Services to Empower Digital Filipinos

Following its rebrand last month, Smart, the country’s leader in mobile, has unboxed its latest slew of innovations that aims to change the way Filipinos connect, enrich their passions, and ultimately optimize their digital life.

Our goal is to make sure no one gets left behind by this digital shift,” said Smart Wireless Consumer Operations Head Katrina Luna-Abelarde, who led the aptly titled Smart Unbox presentation at Shangri-la at the Fort. 

Kick starting the digital life

Championing digital inclusion, Smart introduced its bigger and better Smartphone Prepaid Kit at only P1,288, making it easier for Filipinos to connect to mobile Internet and get accustomed to using online apps and services. For those with multiple gadgets, sharing connections is also now lot easier with Smart Bro Pocket WiFi, available at only P888. 

Because speed and size matter in the online world, Smart also announced its Super Speed LTE SIMs as well as Giga Surf 50, its biggest data offer with 1GB data for surfing and apps, plus free 300MB for video streaming on YouTube and iflix, valid for three days at only P50. As an innovative feature, this 1GB data can be shared with other prepaid subscribers through the Smart’s Pasadata service.

Putting customers first

Keeping customers at the center of everything it does, Smart has teamed up with Twitter to further enhance its customer experience via @SMARTCares with live feedback and a faster response system. Smart is the first brand in the Philippines to use Twitter as its main Customer Service touchpoint for customer care needs and account inquiries in real-time.

To help subscribers maximize their data experience, Smart is powering Marty the Smarty, everyone’s go-to guy for all kinds of questions and concerns about mobile data and the Internet, accessible via his website www.martythesmarty.com and official account on Twitter @martysmarty.

Smart also further enhanced its My Smart mobile app so prepaid and postpaid subscribers can manage their accounts 24/7 – anytime and anywhere. Downloadable on Google Play Store and iTunes, this simple and convenient app also allows subscribers to register and check the status of promos, load up their account and even redeem perks. 

Creating rich digital and real-life experiences

To create rich experiences for subscribers, Smart unveiled its “Own It” campaign, a platform that encourages everyone, especially the youth, to share their passions to the world, giving them a voice larger than themselves. 

Under this campaign, Smart has teamed up with YouTube for Smart Launchpad, a program to help budding content creators upload their own work and broadcast it to the world via Upload Stations all over the country. Smart will be tapping industry experts for workshops that will lead to a selection of the most deserving content creators to fly to LA for a once-in-a-lifetime experience of collaborating with the biggest YouTube Stars.

Teen actor Iñigo Pascual, the son of Kapamilya star Piolo Pascual, has admitted to dating Filipino-British Kelley Day, one of the members of the "It's Showtime" girl group GirlTrends.

"She's beautiful, everyone can see that," Iñigo, 18, told ABS-CBN News' Gretchen Fullido when asked if they are already a couple. "For now, we're just good friends. We don't want to rush things. We're just getting to know each other."

Pascual met Day, also 18, in an acting workshop more than three months ago. The young actor said he considers Day to be his "closest friend," adding: "We have the same interest and everything."

"I consider her to be one of my most trusted friends," Iñigo continued. "I find her to be really beautiful and really charming so we'll see where this goes. ...I'm happy with what we have right now."

As a newcomer to local showbiz, Day said Iñigo inspires her. "He's done a really good job in making his own name considering his father," she said. "I'm super proud of him. I kind of just started as well and he's giving me a lot of advice."

Day also shared that she already met Piolo. "I was really embarrassed because it was at the sports fest," she narrated. "And I don't think his dad knew that we were talking and stuff."

"So at the sports fest, he was playing badminton and I was giving him his water and his towel. And then his dad started looking at me and I said, 'Iñigo, I'm scared,'" she said.

Asked if Iñigo has a chance with her, she teased: "I think so."

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

Baguio Act One Productions Inc., a Baguio based production company, is producing “The Parable of the Lost Sheep”, a Musical play showcasing some of the miracles and parables of Jesus Christ as a medium to rebuff some of the arguments of Atheists now afflicting Christians about the existence of God.

As Jesus travels around, an Atheist from the future suddenly appears and questions Jesus about the existence and the love of God. The conflict then starts and Jesus presents His parables and performs His miracles until eventually convinces the atheist in a very dramatic approach.

The play stars ABS-CBN’s Ced Torrecarion as Jesus Christ and Pastor Reuben Aslor as the Atheist, featuring excellent actors, dancers and talents from Baguio and the Cordilleras. The play is written and directed by Jon B. Achaval, with original music by Elmer Blancaflor, Jordan Mascarenas and Izi Torrecarion

These are all done in songs and dance numbers. A multi level stage, special lights and other effects add to the musical presentation. Original music, costumes, props, magical twists and different treatments of the parables and miracles help make the musical more enthralling.

The World Premiere will be held at The Baguio Convention Centre on July 31, 2016.

Opting to Just Stay Away

Without wishing for such to happen, children of showbiz couples often end up with more attention than they need. Worse, the assumption is that just because one is the scion of famous parents, he/she is expected to join the entertainment industry. While others consciously take advantage of having celebrity parents to pursue their career, others have to fend off queries on their breaking into the industry despite expressing the contrary.

In the case of Good-looking Son (GS), his parents never got him involved in showbusiness. Among the sons of His Father (HF), GS kept a low profile in public for the sake of having a more private life. Nonetheless, the industry was aware of the presence of GS, but out of respect for his parents, his decision not to join the bandwagon was well received. GS even received praises for opting to pursue his studies instead of carving his name in the industry.

However, the popularity of social media was the means for GS to gain extra exposure. His posts would draw significant reactions and he was fair game to bashers. Interest in him goes back to the time when his name was linked to Young Actress (YA). Allegedly, when one of his parents found out that he was having a relationship with YA, the revelation strained the friendship between families. Thus, GS and YA had an off and on relationship.

The type of relationship GS and YA had was hot copy and the controversy was used to propel interest in the career of YA. Finally, YA moved on and found Someone Else (SE). As YA continued to find her happiness, the social media postings somehow gave the impression that GS was still open to the possibility of a relationship with her. Yet, YA did not reciprocate in her postings.

While things seemed settled and time has moved on, peers would ask GS on his relationship with YA. This time, GS would decline to say anything except that he realized he should stop pining and should just stay away from a girl he thinks of as ‘trouble.’ Peers wondered if this reaction has something to do with the newly found love of YA. Repost: Senator Tito Sotto Clarifies Remark that Caused MTRCB to Summon Eat Bulaga Hosts

Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III has responded to some netizens' criticism over his "victim-blaming" remarks on Eat Bulaga.

Sotto, who is also one of the main hosts of the noontime show, was perceived to have made offensive remarks directed toward a winner of the "Juan For All, All For Juan" segment aired on July 9.

Asked for comment, the senator told Rappler via text message: "Watch [the] episode. Some netizens who commented did not even watch it."

Sotto continued: "It was a simple reaction saying that a married lady should not be out at night having shots (or drinking) with men other than her husband. Talagang mapapagbintangan ka (You will really be blamed)."

"That's [the] context. What's wrong with that?" he added.

During the episode in question, the segment winner shared how her male friend had taken advantage of her when she was drunk.

As seen in a video clip, Sotto then suggested the woman shouldn't have been drinking in the first place: "Kasalanan ng lahat ng 'yan ng pag-inom... Kababae mong tao pa-shot-shot ka (That's all because of drinking. You're woman and you're doing shots?)"

Host Jose Manalo added: "Anong suot mo? Naka-shorts ka, 'no? (What were you wearing? You were in shorts, weren't you?)"

After receiving complaints from several netizens, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) have summoned Eat Bulaga executives for a conference scheduled on July 21.

While Sotto said that he was initially unaware of this development with the MTRCB, he welcomes the upcoming dialogue. "Anyway, it's a welcome development if MTRCB looks into [the] matter. They will see that I was merely moralizing for the protection of [the] institution of marriage. Thanks for [the] heads up," he said.

Sotto's remarks did not sit well with some people, who aired their views on social media. They said it was a way of "promoting rape culture" and "victim-blaming" (as quoted in the Inquirer), as well as misogynism. – with reports from Camille Elemia/Rappler.com
