Just So Things Are Clarified

Many stories have been written on the cause of the breakup of a young couple. On the surface, the assumed reason for the failure of the relationship between Award Winner Actress (AW) and Young Performer (YP) is the classic case of family not liking one of the parties. While AW and YP have kept quiet over the past months, with AW seemingly having moved on, another angle has resurfaced on the story why their relationship did not work.

AW and YP started like a typical couple, with YP gaining the trust of AW’s family before courting the young lady. Given that both were young then and starting out, the couple experienced pressure from their career and circumstance. To make the relationship work, AW decided to leave the life she has been accustomed to just to be near YP. In short, she had to make sacrifices to prove that YP was a worthy choice. Meanwhile, YP was maintaining a career that seems to be still. No doubt that YP is talented, but somehow he just fails to connect with the masses, which is unlike the appeal of his contemporaries.

Nonetheless, since YP hanged around with the cool actors then, he became a frequent face at parties, which seemed to contrast his boy-next-door image. While enjoying his fame, YP was linked to an Upcoming Talent (UT) then. YP enjoyed the attention because UT was the assumed major personality that the station was going to build up. However, Someone Close (SC) to AW did not like this issue at all, as it seemed to lack class. After all, UT has been quite controversial, from the choice of her launching project in the network up to the names of young male personalities linked with her. Other than UT, YP has allegedly been involved with several flings, which for him were just to pass the time away, as he and AW were miles apart during some parts of their relationship.

Then, AW, instead of remaining passive in her career, started being noticed for her talent and thus, was exposed to opportunities. Juggling her starting career with the seemingly immaturity of YP in their relationship and that of pressure coming from family, AW had enough and called it quits. Perhaps her effort to fight for him was unappreciated. AW even had to defend their relationship to her family and even her management. As soon as the breakup became official, people noticed that AW was not her usual self, whereas YP seemed to have moved on with his crew. At one point, AW even tried to talk to YP, but he ignored her, which really hurt her.

Yet, YP realized that AW was his one great love and even tried to reconcile with her. Their paths kept crossing and YP thought that it was time to win AW back. Besides, he was confident that she would return to him, just like before. Unfortunately, YP was wrong. Try as he did, AW had already drifted away from him, as there was a New Man (NM) lingering around her. NM, unlike YP, is a private person and is not used to the limelight. Moreover, NM is liked by SC, given that he is a familiar face within the showbiz circle. Thus, tables are now turned. While AW has truly focused on NM, YP is doing his best to move on, but this time, he realized that the pain of the breakup was mostly his own doing.

‘The depth and strength of a human character are defined by its moral reserves. People reveal themselves completely only when they are thrown out of the customary conditions of their life, for only then do they have to fall back on their reserves.’ - Leon Trotsky

Repost: ABS-CBN in a Bind Over Franchise Renewal

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. is in a bind after failing to have its legislative franchise approved before the 16th Congress closed shop on June 6.

The Philippines’ largest radio-TV network is now looking down a more difficult road to getting a new, 25-year congressional franchise from the 17th Congress, especially in the face of its spat with President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte and his supporters are unhappy about ABS-CBN’s attacks against him during the campaign season.

Two bills were introduced in the 16th Congress for the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise granted in March 1995: one by Isabela Rep. Giorgidi Aggabao, filed in September 2014, and another by Baguio Rep. Nicasio M. Aliping Jr., filed in December of the same year.

The bills would renew ABS-CBN’s right to operate TV and radio broadcasting stations in the Philippines through microwave, satellite or whatever means, including the use of new technologies in television and radio systems.

The Inquirer contacted several ABS-CBN executives for comment, but the Lopez-owned broadcast network declined to comment for now.

ABS-CBN’s 25-year franchise expires on March 30, 2020.

A member of the House legislative franchise committee, who declined to be named for lack of authority to speak for the panel, said ABS-CBN had sought the renewal six years before the expiration of its franchise because it didn’t want to risk having to go through the process under an unfriendly administration.

The committee chair, Marikina Rep. Marcelino Teodoro, did not reply to the Inquirer’s calls or text messages seeking comment.

Strong opposition

The House member said ABS-CBN’s application for renewal of franchise faced strong opposition from cable operators, who had demanded a public hearing.

The same source said ABS-CBN’s franchise also lacked support from President Aquino’s allies in the House.

The source said Mr. Aquino’s allies felt the criticisms against the President were too personal and offensive and went to the point of nitpicking.

Without the franchise committee’s approval, ABS-CBN’s application for renewal could not be tackled in the plenary.

In contrast, another broadcasting company had smooth sailing when it applied for the renewal of its franchise. Aliw Broadcasting Corp., a radio station owned by the late businessman Antonio L. Cabangon Chua, got a 25-year extension in 2015, or two years before the expiration of its franchise.

President Aquino signed Republic Act No. 10790 extending the franchise of Aliw Broadcasting Corp. from April 13, 2017, to April 13, 2042.

Negative TV ads

The House member said ABS-CBN was likely to have a tougher time getting an extension, especially with Duterte not hiding his displeasure at ABS-CBN’s airing a negative TV campaign ad against him that was paid for by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.

The ad used children as talking heads in reacting negatively to video clips of Duterte cursing Pope Francis and his joke about the gang rape and murder of an Australian missionary during a prison riot in Davao City in 1989.

The Davao City mayor’s foul language caused controversies during the three-month campaign.

The video on YouTube that went viral showed Duterte saying how beautiful the missionary was and then joking that he should have been the first to rape her.

“They went ahead of the mayor. Kill them all,” Duterte recalled saying during the prison riot.

The Australian missionary was later killed by the prisoners.

Duterte also drew the ire of the Catholic Church after he called the Pope a “son of a bitch,” blaming the Pontiff for the traffic jams in Manila during his visit to the Philippines in January last year.

The firestorm generated by his profanity-laced speeches prompted Duterte to tone down his rhetoric.

‘Control my mouth’

In his first TV appearance after winning the May 9 presidential election, Duterte promised that he would no longer talk trash.

“I need to control my mouth. I cannot always be rude because I will be representing our country,” Duterte said.

“If you are the President of the country, you need to be prim and proper, almost holy,” he added.

Duterte won the election by a landslide and he is expected to have a supermajority in both the House and the Senate in the 17th Congress.

Repost: The Voice's Christina Grimmie Dead at 22 After Being Shot at Concert

Singer Christina Grimmie has died at 22 years old.

"It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord," her publicist tells E! News.

"She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn't survive the gun shot wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning. If you'd like to give back to Christina's family in her memory, please consider donating to the families GoFundMe page in their time of need."

The former Voice contestant was taken to a local hospital tonight in Orlando, Fla., tonight after being shot by a male suspect, who proceeded to shoot himself.

Members of the band Before You Exit were signing autographs after a concert at Orlando's Plaza Live when a male suspect shot Grimmie.

"Upon arrival officers found the male suspect, who was deceased and one victim who was gravely injured. That victim, singer Christina Grimmie, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries," the Orlando Police tells E! News.

"Detectives were told the suspect, who is not being identified at this time, walked toward Christina and shot her. Christina's brother immediately tackled the suspect stopping him from causing any more harm to Christina and her fans. During the struggle, the suspect shot himself. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene."

Police tell us the investigation is in its preliminary stages.

In 2014, Grimmie participated in season six of The Voice. Her unique sound caused all four coaches to turn their chairs, but ultimately she joined Adam Levine's team and went on to the finals, finishing in third place.

After news of Grimmie's hospitalization, The Voice tweeted, "We are heartbroken. @TheRealGrimmie is a loved member of our family.  Our thoughts are with her and her family.  #PrayForChristina."

Levine also posted a throwback photo of himself with Christina, writing, "I'm sad, shocked and confused. We love you so much Grimmie. We are all praying hard that you can pull through this...this just isn't fair."

Earlier this year, Grimmie released her second EP, Side A, which consisted of four songs, with plans to later release Side B.
