Repost: After Being Axed by Nike, Pacquiao Wears Under Armour for Pickup Game

Manny Pacquiao looks like he has moved on from being axed by Nike.

An aide of the Filipino ring icon posted photos of Pacquiao wearing rival sneaker brand Under Armour on Sunday, days after Nike terminated its relationship with him.

Nike made its decision following controversial comments Pacquiao made about same-sex marriage, where he compared gay couples to animals. Pacquiao, a senatorial bet for the United Nationalist Alliance, apologized for the comment, but maintained that he remained against same-sex marriage.

That did not stop Nike from terminating the relationship, calling Pacquiao's comments "abhorrent."

Pacquiao, meanwhile, said he respected Nike's decision, while noting that their endorsement deal had expired and that Nike was only a clothing sponsor for him.

A Secret Agreement

Art makes the world more interesting. When an artist interprets the world, he/she could either impress or disappoint the art-loving public. However, to be known as an artist, one needs to achieve certain recognition in various or specific art disciplines. This recognition can be done once the artist has established his/her own voice of style in the art pieces. Lucky are those who are able to make money from their passion in the arts.

Artists have disagreements and discussions on what makes a piece art or if an artist should charge so much for work, whether commissioned or not. For patrons of the arts, emotions evoked when viewing or experiencing a piece motivate their appreciation for artwork. Sometimes the names of artists are considered and sadly, some immediately praise a piece of work simply because it was made by someone who already has a name. Thus, as intriguing as showbiz is the world of the arts.

When Talented Artist (TA) started to show various pieces done privately, the public was divided between admirers and cynics. Admirers immediately saw beauty in the effort of TA and in the details of the various art pieces. By contrast, cynics doubted the ability of TA. To counteract accusations, TA would post various stages of the progress of certain pieces. Although the price of the services of TA was prohibitive for the common art lover, showbiz personalities, friends, and other rich individuals started to commission TA for various artworks.

Despite the passion and willingness to address the demand of clients, the volume was overwhelming. To keep up with the requests, TA had to ensure promptness even if the list of people waiting for their art pieces grew longer. With orders coming in, TA was assured never to be the ‘starving artist,’ a cliché that has bothered many in the art world. However, here lies the problem. With so many orders and so little time, TA had to find a way to solve the problem and assure untarnished reputation in terms of meeting client demands.

After pondering on the problem, TA found an Unnamed Artist (UA) somewhere in the art capital of a city. Eager not to become a starving artist, UA was bound to secrecy. As orders were coming in, UA took charge of completing and polishing some of the orders for the work of TA. TA allegedly rented a very private place where UA can exclusively work. As part of the deal, UA cannot accept other orders and neither could the agreement with TA be revealed. A public revelation could put TA in bad light and cast doubt on the art pieces TA had done, and such an embarrassing situation is something that TA will not be able to afford these days.

Repost: Foot Locker Distances Itself from Manny Pacquiao: ‘No Plans to Work with Him’

Following news that he had been dropped by lead sponsor Nike, Foot Locker have revealed to Gay Star Business that they are no longer in contract with boxer Matty Pacquiao and have no plans to work with him again.

Pacquiao shot a commercial for Foot Locker that was aired last year. Forbes estimate that the Philippino boxer earned around $12million (€10.8million) in endorsement deals in 2015 – listing Nike, Foot Locker, Nestle and Wonderful Pistachio’s as chief among these. He was the second highest-paid celebrity of the year, raking in around $160million (€144million) – the bulk of which came from his earnings for fighting Floyd Weather Jnr.

On Wednesday, Nike issued a statement saying that it was dropping its endorsement of Pacquiao following controversial comments he had made relating to gay couples.

Both Nestle and Wonderful Pistachios issued statements saying that they had worked with him last year but were no longer contracted to him.

Approached for comment for Gay Star Business, a spokesperson for Foot Locker said: ‘Foot Locker worked with Manny Pacquiao briefly and we are no longer in contract with him and have no plans to work with him.’

The statement was welcomed by Ian Johnson, of LGBT marketing consultancy Out Now.

‘The lesson is clear,’ he told Gay Star Business. ‘In many significant markets around the world, the ‘tipping point’ is passed.

‘More people choose to be allies of LGBT people than are motivated by anti-LGBT sentiment. To a brand the decision is simple: it is not only being seen to be doing the ‘right’ thing – it is also smart business.

‘People who are anti-LGBT are finding it harder than ever to seek a commercial platform from which to spread their feelings and this is something that LGBT young people especially ought to take great heart from.’

Concert Review: Gerphil Flores Tales of Love A Valentine Concert

Gerphil Flores Tales of Love A Valentine Concert
The Theater at Solaire
February 11 and 12, 2016

A Promise to the Ear to be Broken to the Hope
by Atty. Ferdinand Topacio

A PROMISE TO THE EAR TO BE BROKEN TO THE HOPE

Gerphil Flores is undeniably one of the more unique gifted discoveries to emerge from a talent competition. Not of the usual mold of Mariah Carey/Taylor Swift wannabes, Flores is a classically-trained singer (UP College of Music, where she will be graduating with honors this year) who has successfully crossed-over her formal voice training to the local pop scene with some degree of success. Deftly combining elements of classical and Broadway to pop, she has introduced the style of voice culture to a larger audience. Her being easy on the eyes – being half-Teutonic – has helped a lot in this respect.

It was thus with much expectation that I sat on the third row of Solaire’s The Theater, waiting with eager anticipation for the Divine Ms. Flores’ latest melodic offerings. Backed up by no less than the country’s premier orchestra, the highly-regarded Manila Philharmonic Orchestra (under the able baton of Maestro Rodel Colmenar), the promise was great.

Ms. Flores as a chanteuse, delivered as usual; the production, however, was a letdown.

Gerphil breezed through the first set of songs without breaking a sweat, her voice hitting the notes dead center with impressive regularity, her diction Edith Piaf-ish clear. In particular, she gave a fresh take on the old David Gates chestnut “If,” exploring the melodic sinuosities of the song which are very often lost when sung in cantabile as it is often performed. The segue to a medley of songs from the play Les Miserables, where Flores is joined by three young tenors, showcased her ability to belt out Broadway hits. The medley later on evolved into a delightful fugue, marred only by the fact that two of the tenors were not a match for Flores’ refined vocal skills.

Flores performed the rest of her repertoire with poise and precision: her reading of the theme from The Godfather was sympathetic; she resists the temptation to grandstand with “Somewhere In Time”, instead delivering a wonderfully subdued version; and gives the audience a refreshingly heartfelt rendition of “Starting Over Again.” She then goes on to surprise with a rebooted reading of the Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston standard “I Will Always Love You,” breathing new life into an overused concert piece by interspersing Italian lyrics with the original lines.

The concert finishes strongly with a medley of Aegis songs arranged in classical orchestral style (a real crowd pleaser), and ends with the threadbare staple “Time To Say Goodbye”, sung with no surprises. An encore of a reworked classic set to chill-out beat, together with a dance troupe, ended the night on a groovy note.

As I said, Gerphil did not disappoint. What was disappointing was the direction, which was uninspired and middling. While Director Floy Quintos may have wanted to focus the spotlight (literally and figuratively) on Flores’ abundant vocal talents, monotony tends to set in after a while. An attempt to break the pattern by inserting Jose Mari Chan utterly failed. Chan to me is one of the country’s top three greatest composers (his little-known works “Love Like The Wind” and “One Way Road To Fame”, IMHO, are one of the best Filipino musical creations ever), but as an entertainer, he is merely adequate. His sentimental version of “Fly Me To The Moon” was pleasant at best; his medley of “Deep In My Heart/Refrain” well-applauded but stale. Chan’s laid-back attitude may have even rubbed off on Flores, as their duet of the overused “Please Be Careful With My Heart” evoked little feelings from both, as well as the spectators. An attempt to perk up the proceedings, as it were, with a group dance number during intermission was mildly successful, owing to the said group’s high skill level, but the incongruity with the night’s theme was not lost on the audience.

Due to the copious stories behind each song that Flores sang onstage, Quintos could have done a better job of weaving a “tale” before and after each rendition, thus making the concert a great deal more engaging. Yet, he squandered the opportunity by playing it safe and presenting each number in isolation, thus creating a show utterly unworthy of the talents of Flores, the Philharmonic, and the tastes of the viewers. To paraphrase Shakespeare, we know thee now, Boring, and thy name is Floy.

On the whole, Tales of Love is an enjoyable sampling of the vocal faculties of Flores, the musical proficiency of our homegrown Philharmonic, made less than enchanting by the ho-hum staging of its director, thus a promise not wholly fulfilled. Pity, because under a more capable production, the tales could have been that of Scheherazade.
