Reconciling a Major Verdict
The entertainment industry today is controlled not by popular and big-name stars, but by people behind the cameras. The latter makes decisions that actually affect the popularity of stars. For example, good marketing can promote a talentless personality into stardom. Ignoring a talented performer by limiting his/her exposure can kill potential popularity and propagation of true talent. Thus, stars have to play with the rules if they want to be assured of projects and exposure. Not all management decisions are advantageous to talents, regardless of their clout. When a major talent is not agreeable with a decision, he/she has a couple of options, which are stay on and wait or move out.
Over the past weeks, a question has been lingering, “Is a major talent (MT) about to fly the coop?” When a show was cancelled and replaced by a new one, majority of the talents found themselves with no projects and no guarantee of exposure from the network. The effect of cancellation is not only on singers or performers, but also on production people. Thus, several persons and families are affected whenever a project ends or is cancelled.
When the cast of the replacement show (RS) was announced, people were expecting the inclusion of MT. However, MT was never mentioned in the final lineup, although she was previously named to be part of a new show along with some cast members of RS. Allegedly, this decision did not sit well with MT.
Being a top talent in the network, MT is looked up to as a mentor, and younger talents of the cancelled show have treated MT with such respect. MT felt for talents who have lost the opportunity to work with and learn from seasoned performers like her and others. However, she could not do anything, as the decision came from the top.
So, what could she do? Allegedly, MT has sent feelers that she wants to join her former station (FS). As stories are floating that FS intends to revive a show that is very close to MT’s heart, MT seems perfect for the show. In fact, if it were not for this show, MT would not be where she is now. Will the network lose MT sooner than expected? While MT will be welcomed at FS, will she be treated with higher status compared to her present network? Alternatively, will the management of her present network act before it’s too late? Losing MT will definitely be a blow to its status at this point.

SC Grants Enrile’s Petition to Post Bail

The Supreme Court on Tuesday voted 8-4 to grant the bail petition of Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, one of the three senators facing graft and plunder charges in connection with the alleged pork barrel scam.
The decision was announced by SC spokesman Ted Te at a press briefing Tuesday afternoon. He did not provide any details.
“The court granted the petition for bail of petitioner Juan Ponce Enrile, subject to the terms and conditions to be specified by the Court in its Order which will be forthcoming,” he said.
A News TV Live report said the high court set Enrile's bail at P1 million.
In his report on "Balitanghali," GMA News' Joseph Morong said those who dissented were Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, and Associate Justices Estela Perlas Bernabe and Marvic Leonen.
Te, at the briefing, said Associate Francis Jardeleza inhibited because he used to serve as the Solicitor General, while Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes was on leave.
JPE will be "overjoyed"
Lawyer Estelito Mendoza, Enrile’s counsel, believed the veteran senator "will be overjoyed to regain his freedom and grateful to the Supreme Court."
“Most of those now detained, about 90 percent are like him, in preventive detention, meaning only undergoing trial, and not serving sentence,” he said.
Enrile, 91, filed his petition on September 4, 2014, citing his advanced age and voluntary surrender to the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court.
Now that Enrile can post bail, he can return to the Senate to resume his duties and responsibilities as a lawmaker, his lawyer said. The 90-day suspension order meted out by the Sandiganbayan Third Division on July 25, 2014, has already lapsed.
Enrile's trial for his alleged involvement in the P10-billion scam is still pending before the Sandiganbayan.
Aside from Enrile, the two other senators facing graft and plunder for allegedly misusing their pork barrel, or Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), are Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada.
Enrile is currently on hospital arrest at the PNP General Hospital while Estrada and Revilla are detained at the PNP Custodial Center, both in Camp Crame in Quezon City.
Several former and current members of the House of Representatives and private individuals, as well as alleged scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles, are also facing charges in connection with the alleged anomaly.
Legal victory
Enrile's colleagues in the Senate, meanwhile, welcomed the high court's decision.
Senator Francis Escudero on Tuesday welcomed the decision of the SC on Enrile’s petition saying it will be beneficial to many other accused.
"This is a seminal and precedent setting decision on the right to bail given the unique theory used by Senator Enrile," said Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero in a text message to GMA News Online. "Many other accused can benefit from this decision."
“I congratulate him on his legal victory and look forward to working with him again in the Senate,” Escudero added.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said he already expected a favorable decision for Enrile. “I expected that. Good for Sen JPE,” he said in a separate text message.
Senate President Franklin Drilon said the Senate will respect the SC decision granting bail to Enrile.
“The Senate will always respect, follow and implement every decision of the courts. We will abide by the legal processes as we have always done in the past,” he said in a press statement.
Senator Ralph Recto, in jest, said he is “looking forward to working with the youngest member of the Senate.”
He said with the full agenda of Senate, hard labor awaits Enrile.
“With his experience, he can certainly enrich the discussions on the budget and the BBL (Bangsamoro Basic Law). It is also worth noting that his liberty came on the 70th anniversary of the end of the war with Japan, which he fought in, and serves as a testament to the man’s resilience and staying power,” he said in a press statement.

Breaking Up For the Sake of Moving Her Career
In a relationship, the most wonderful aspect is the acceptance of both families of the partners. This situation is easier said than done, as some parents will do everything to make sure their children do not end up with each. Other than not liking the partner, reputation is another important factor. Many families are concerned with protecting their name and status in society. Thus, when a boyfriend or girlfriend is introduced, parents scrutinize the background and give their approval.
Although the Scion of a Showbiz Royalty (SS) clan keeps a low profile, his private life became the subject of various reports a few weeks ago because of his involvement with a Reality Show Talent (RS). The items revealed that SS and RS have broken up, but did not reveal the reasons for the separation. The reason for the separation seems obvious.
Prior to entering showbiz, RS already had a following in a different field and her image is a stark contrast to the image of SS. RS seems to like the attention and glamour of showbiz, whereas SS enjoys his making of his own name in a field that is different from the rest of his family. When RS got her break on TV, it did not last long enough as she was pulled out of the teleserye. Wanting to stay in the business, RS had to reinvent herself and that included posing for a men’s magazine. Then, RS is now being positioned to have a sexy image.
The family of SS is conservative, and at this point, is very concerned about keeping a flawless image. The image should be free from mudslinging and other questionable behavior. Thus, the relationship of SS and RS can be exploited to bring criticisms on his family. The matriarch was worried and this led SS to ask RS to choose between her career and him. SS lost, as RS chose her career over him.
Many people develop their entire identity based upon what they do, elevating their career to a level of great importance in their lives. – David Bohl

Bangkok Bomb: Deadly Blast Rocks Thailand Capital
Source: www.bbc.com
A bomb has exploded close to a shrine in the centre of the Thai capital, Bangkok, police say.
Local reports suggest at least 12 people have died and at least 20 more have been injured.
The BBC's Jonathan Head, who is at the scene, says there is a huge amount of chaos, with body parts scattered everywhere.
The attack took place close to the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok's central Chidlom district.
The explosion occurred at about 19:00 local time (12:00 GMT).
No-one has yet said they carried out the attack.
Some reports said foreign tourists may have been among the casualties.
The Bangkok Post quotes police as saying at least one more bomb has been made safe by officers in the Ratchaprasong area.
'Really graphic'
Our correspondent says this is a very well-known shrine in the centre of Bangkok, next to a five-star hotel.
He says people around the shrine were hit by the full force of the blast.
There were burnt motorbikes on the main road, with paramedics and police trying to treat the injured, he says.
One bystander, Alessandro Ursic, told the BBC: "When I arrived they had already cleared the bodies from the ground outside the Erawan shrine but there were and there are still pieces of human flesh strewn around the intersection; it's really graphic."
Another, Richard Srikureja, said: "I was walking to a mall right next to the shrine and I heard a huge blast and people were just sprinting everywhere. It was total chaos and it's right in the middle of Bangkok."

National police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri told Agence France-Presse news agency: "I can confirm it was a bomb, we can't tell which kind yet, we are checking."
The explosion was on the Ratchaprasong intersection, which has been the centre of political demonstrations in recent years.
Our correspondent says bomb attacks in Bangkok are extremely rare.
There has been a Muslim insurgency, but this has been largely confined to the south of the country and attacks rarely take place elsewhere.
But Bangkok has seen a decade of sometimes violent rivalry between political factions.
The military took over ruling the country in May last year, removing an elected government following months of unrest.
